Joshua Garnett‘s Washington visit turned into a contract offer. The team will sign the former 49ers first-round pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Washington will add Garnett and fellow offensive lineman David Steinmetz. One of the space-clearing roster moves: waiving tight end Thaddeus Moss with an injury designation.
Garnett has not lived up to his first-round billing and has played in just 22 games over the past four seasons. The Stanford product missed the 2017 and ’19 seasons. The 49ers gave him 11 starts as a rookie in 2016 but only used him as a depth piece in 2018. Considering the once-coveted guard’s career trajectory, that will probably be the role he vies for in Washington.
Washington will be able to move Moss to its IR list, should the second-generation pass-catcher go unclaimed on waivers. The son of Randy Moss, Thaddeus showed promise at LSU but went undrafted. He represented a possible weapon for a Washington team housing perhaps the league’s leanest tight end group.
Good luck to the WA boy Garnett
I’m surprised Moss didn’t get a longer look considering the lack of talent in Washington’s tight end room
Because he’s not an NFL caliber TE. Was not a starter for LSU and left a year to early. Was advised by many to not enter draft last year. Needs to work on route running, blocking and getting out of breaks. It’s the reason he wasn’t drafted. Only reason he was signed was both for depth in training camp and his last name.
I guess nepotism only gets you so far. I didn’t really know a ton about Moss, so that’s an interesting scouting tidbit
Yeah, Moss is the archetype for leaving a year too early. In his defense, his name recognition was pretty high after the astounding run LSU had this past year (his father’s accomplishments not included). However, leaving early like that is only an advantage if you think that your extra media attention raises your stock higher than your actual abilities do. Otherwise, you’d play another season and answer those production questions, as well as developing further. It’s not like scouts would simply forget Moss’ junior year while evaluating his senior season-hell, Jordan Love went in the first round because of what he did two years prior.
Moss is athletic, but he’s a pure receiver at the position and is still extremely raw. That said, being waived for Garnett is surprising. I would have expected them to put some time into seeing what Moss could be taught before cutting him loose. I suppose the lack of an offseason played into the decision to acquire veteran help over rookie developmental projects.
