Aug. 23: Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reports that Thomas is not expected to be back at the Ravens’ facility today (video link). As ESPN’s Ed Werder observes (via Twitter), the fact that Thomas is being asked to stay away without any public assurances about his future could be significant. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network says the team should make a final decision today (video link).
Aug. 22: The Ravens sent Earl Thomas home on Saturday, as Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. This comes one day after Thomas’ practice altercation with teammate Chuck Clark, which also prompted the Ravens to send the safety packing for the afternoon.
The Ravens are now evaluating their options, though Thomas’ deal does not afford them an easy escape hatch. The Ravens may be able to escape Thomas’ fully-guaranteed 2020 salary of $10MM if they suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team, PFT’s Mike Florio writes. Of course, Thomas would fight such a move and the Ravens would have to support their argument in arbitration. If they can’t get his 2020 salary off the books with a suspension, cutting Thomas would leave the Ravens with a $5MM cap charge this year and $10MM next year. Meanwhile, Thomas would leave $22MM richer, after just one season with the Ravens.
This isn’t the first time Thomas has found himself at odds with team management. The Pro Bowler got into a scuffle with teammate Brandon Williams after a game last season and never seemed to fully grasp the playbook. Thomas, 31, registered 49 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, and four passes defensed in his first season with Baltimore.
Before Thomas came to Baltimore, and before things turned sour, he spent nine years in Seattle as one of the premier safeties in the NFL. His platform year was largely wiped out by a broken leg, but he still found a solid four-year, $55MM deal payday. Thomas came to Baltimore with three first-team All-Pro nods, two second-team All-Pro selections, and six Pro Bowl trips. Meanwhile, Pro Football Focus regularly ranked him among the NFL’s best at his position.
Cut or not, he’s playing and getting paid this year. But it seems the players have figured out how to get off a team they dislike. Ramsey faking an injury; Adams and Yannick talking smack publicity & now fighting for E Thomas.
Thomas seems to be turning into AB 2.0 if you ask me….
Agreed. Flicking off Seattle bench’s, naked women w/ his brother this offseason (busted by his wife), reports from last season Baltimore soured on him & now this.
yeah man i’m a 12, that punk all those years we rooted for, him why he flipped us jees this our repayment hes a loser and an ingratefull wretch. And He Can Have This
Thomas has a reason to flip off PC and the Seahawks. He had been a great player for us and Seattle did him wrong. Why you wouldn’t resign a player like him was mystifying. You are either a very uninformed fan a fair weather fan or a troll probably from SF. Judging by your spelling probably the last.
He was a HOF player for our Hawks but he crossed a line the minute he walked into that Dallas locker room. I love Earl, always will, but he’s made some bad decisions- put it this way, his real life IQ is nowhere near the height of his football IQ
They should have re-signed him, but his conduct since has been pretty questionable, especially considering that he was never a problem prior in Seattle.
I’d agree with you if there wasn’t this thing called a salary cap. 15M a year is a big hit along with the bad attitude, thus not too ‘mystifying’ in my book…
The big turn in Seattle was the division of the locker room after the SB. Then Seattle jerked him around on a contract. It seemed they were going to sign him then not. They should have traded him after the SB. The biggest problem makers were gone he was the last to leave. Bennett is the only one that would not be welcome back. He was the worst of the bunch.
He doesn’t want off the team. He wants to stay, if for no other reason has a chance to win a SB. I’m sure being sent home never entered his mind. Prima Donna but a good player
Get Rid Of Him, He Will Cause Discord In The Locker Room, Players Of His Kind Should Be Banned, They Sometimes Show Thug Gang Mentality … Ban !
Obviously you keep Thomas for the time being, as he’s among the league’s best safeties when healthy. However, I would at least find a veteran reinforcement just in case he becomes a lockerroom disruption. Clayton Geathers had some solid seasons with the Colts and he’s just 28, so perhaps they’d be interested
Agreed, 100%.
Trade him then
His contract will make that more difficult, but I don’t doubt that there will be teams interested. This is especially true if the Ravens take a A.B. style approach where unloading the player for some kind of return is a higher priority than it normally would be for a talent of his caliber.
That’s ok…….Dallas will/should take him!!!!!!
Trade him back to Seattle.
Seattle doesn’t have the cap space and unlikely they want him back after the middle finger incident…
