Jerry Jones is still on board, but Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is less-than-enthusiastic about the prospect of signing Earl Thomas, Ed Werder of ESPN.com (Twitter link) hears. McCarthy, who places a major emphasis on locker room culture, is concerned about the veteran safety’s fit in Dallas.
Thomas, a seven-time Pro Bowler, left his past two clubs on bad terms. As one league source told Werder, “Contact anyone you know with the Ravens or the Seahawks and ask if the positives outweigh the negatives.” In Seattle, Thomas literally left the team with an extended middle finger as he was carted off of the field. In Baltimore, Thomas failed to grasp the playbook in his first year and wore out his welcome last week when he got into an altercation with a teammate.
Still, the final decision ultimately lies with Jones, who has made no secret of his fondness for the safety. Thomas has reciprocated, on several occasions through multiple channels. Thomas might not be the prototypical team player, but his potential as a game-changer is undeniable. Thomas has spent the bulk of his career as one of the NFL’s very best safeties, resulting in 713 tackles and 30 interceptions over the course of his career.
For now, the Cowboys are set to start the season with new addition Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Xavier Woods, and Darian Thompson as the leaders of the group.
So he’s a problem case. Perfect fit in Dallas. Nothing says “Cowboys” like dysfunction.
I don’t think he’s committed a crime. Doesn’t fit with the Cowboys
Solid point. I retract my previous statement.
I like when fans of other teams act like NFL players on their team don’t commit crimes.
right? like Kareem hunt is out of work, oh wait. he isn’t.
It will be interesting to see Jerry’s approach here. Take control like he has in the past or defer to his new HC.
I hope the latter, though I’m not optimistic. You hire a coach, you should have faith in and listen to the coach.
Not really Jerry’s style, though.
McCarthy couldn’t handle squat in his final year with the Packers. Doubt he could handle Earl Thomas.
The cases are completely different and any Packers fan paying attention would tell you McCarthy was shafted with poor draft picks/minimal impact free agents, and a GM with increasing mental health issues during his end year in GB.
the packers sign free agents?
but seriously great points. I think coach McCarthy has already had his finger prints all over the team where applicable and whenever possible.
He might be a head case and a locker room problem but when healthy he’s better than the other 3 safeties Dallas has combined. So they might have to roll the dice irregardless…..
It’s possible this is subterfuge. If he’s wanted to be in Dallas so desperately, maybe this is an attempt to drive down the cost by the Cowboys.
Also, irregardless is technically correct, but you should consider swapping for regardless.
The use of putting letters together that do not form a word is problematic when trying to make a point. This is especially true with “irregardless.”
Sometimes they may follow up it with humorous, “I could care less if I use nonexistent words!”
I couldn’t care less(maybe). But correcting word usage on a sports site is about as effective as a nerf dildo.
Thanks friend. I will remember that for next time. And you should consider capitalizing Nerf.
While I incorrectly responded to you, the comment was more to afsooner. You corrected with more tact than I did.
@Technically, I was actually responding more to afsooner. I was being a bit facetious, you corrected poster with more tact.
That’s okay. Patriots will take him in if he’s willing to listen to Belichick & company.
If he wouldn’t comply with John Harbaugh, I don’t see why he would be so willing to listen to Belichick. The Patriots are also pretty set in the secondary. Phillips and McCourty are an underrated duo. They need help at linebacker IMO
he can go help them struggle to a 6 win season!
Just like the draft, take the gamble when major talent is involved.
Thomas is much like brown a locker room Cancer. Easy pass
Ron Rivera says too soon dude.
As a cowboy fan really like McCarthy but he’s wrong here. As far as Seattle goes that was an ongoing situation where they were being really cheap and did not want to pay him what he was worth as far as Baltimore the guy was flat out lied to just to get him to sign with the ravens. Most players if they get sick of a franchise and leave and you call that franchise up you’re not going to hear anything good about them that is just a fact and that is why McCarthy said call the Seahawks or ravens because he already knows without even knowing all the details what they are going to say. Notice he refuses to mention the guy is a seven time pro bowler as well as a three time all pro and has a Super Bowl ring. He also refuses to mention how Thomas was one of the founding fathers of the legion of boom. He has no interest in Thomas based on a couple of things but refuses to admit the truckload of good things he brings because he does not want him if he wanted Thomas he would say those couple of things were just isolated incidents and mention all of the good things he has done in his career. Also McCarthy’s past history has got to be taken into account here the guy has never been known to want to go the extra mile for defense he always wants to go the extra mile for offense. If I was Jones I sign Thomas I make it a very low risk contract where most of his money is performance-based that way if it does turn out this guy is just a bad guy you can cut ties at minimal risk. I will say one thing as far as Seattle is concerned though not a word was said about Thomas until Thomas made it very clear he wanted out of Seattle and not a word was said about Thomas in Baltimore until he made it very clear how he was missed lead by the franchise.
The return key is functional.
Jerry likes shiny things.
