The Broncos have agreed to sign Mark Barron, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The former Rams and Steelers linebacker will help fill in for rookie Justin Strnad, who will miss the year after undergoing wrist surgery.
Barron, 31 in October, joined the Steelers on a two-year, $12MM deal last year. Barron registered 82 tackles, three sacks, and one fumble recovery in 15 games last year, but the Steelers dropped him in March to free up additional cap space.
Barron, who once played safety, played his best years with the Rams. In L.A., Barron posted at least 100 tackles, and compiled 16 tackles for loss in 2016. The former No. 7 overall pick is unlikely to live up to his draft status at this stage of his career, but he could carve out an inside linebacker role now that Strnad is out and linebacker Todd Davis is dealing with a calf injury.
Veteran presence and while no impact player, he could prove a roster upgrade. Here’s hoping.
This dude used to be a baller in college at Alabama. Not so much in the NFL. Of course he was also a safety back then too.
Good signing. Barron has been a good player in the league, I don’t know why everyone is regarding him as a bust. In Tampa he didn’t play that well, but he really was not the worst safety we had ever seen. He just was not meant for coverage. Switching to linebacker in St. Louis was an excellent decision, and Barron was great in that role.
At this point, though, that’s all ancient history in NFL terms. Barron right now is a good number two for a 3-4 base team like Denver, and can play that role in the nickel packages that Fangio is likely to run. I think it’s fair to consider Barron’s career a success overall. He’s been in the league for around a decade, and has been a starter for much of that time. Todd Davis wasn’t too great a linebacker anyway, so there shouldn’t be much drop off with Barron if he plays to what we expect from him.
