The Bills parted ways with one-time fantasy football hero Stephen Hauschka. With the veteran kicker out of the picture, they’ll turn the job over to Georgia Southern product Tyler Bass.

Hauschka spent the bulk of his career with the Seahawks and had stops with the Ravens and Broncos before landing with the Bills in 2017. In his first Buffalo season, he converted 87.9% of his field goals. Since then, he’s gone 22-of-28 in each of his last two campaigns. Last year, the 35-year-old struggled from deep range, going just 1-for-5 on kicks of 50+ yards. After watching him compete with Bass – a sixth-round pick – the Bills have decided to go in a younger (and cheaper) direction.
By cutting Hauschka, the Bills will save $1.55MM against the 2020 cap while carrying an equal amount as a dead money hit.
I’m a bit surprised considering Hauschka showed he could handle playoff pressure and delivered almost all the Bills scoring against the Texans. I’d like to see the Bears sign him.
One-time decent kicker? “Bears! Bears! Sign him!”
Hauschka was pretty consistently matched by the rookie Bass in practices, both around 81%. This last scrimmage was his nail in the coffin when he went 1/2 on extra points. The move saves Buffalo $2,175,000 in salary in 2020 and $1.5 million in cap space. Hauschka has been in decline a bit and awful beyond 50 yards. He’s been under 80% in overall field goal percentage the last two years and was just 1-of-5 from beyond 50 in 2020. Seems like there was a pretty even playing field so they went with the least expensive option.
Great analysis. Thank you!
WOW…
Mic drop…
This guy would be a great signing for most NFL teams in want of a better kicker.
I believe that Hauschka began his NFL career in Minnesota, even if he didn’t make it to the 53 man roster.
Who???!!!!!?
