The Chiefs have verbally agreed to deals with all six players in their draft class, as Terez A. Paylor of Yahoo Sports tweets. Here’s the full rundown of the group, headlined by one of this year’s most intriguing rushers:
1-32: Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB (LSU)
2-63: Willie Gay Jr., LB (Mississippi State)
3-96: Lucas Niang, OT (TCU)
4-138: L’Jarius Sneed, S (Louisiana Tech)
5-177: Mike Danna, DE (Michigan)
7-237: Thakarius Keyes, CB (Tulane)
Don’t let Edwards-Helaire’s 5’7″ frame fool you – he’s tough, durable, and a proven three-down back. His agility and soft hands made him one of this year’s most coveted rookie RBs, though some evaluators were concerned about his speed. That’s not a huge problem in KC, where they already have ample quickness on offense.
The LSU product is expected to serve as the Chiefs’ top running back, ahead of Damien Williams and Darwin Thompson. Elijah McGuire, Darrel Williams, and former Raiders rusher DeAndre Washington are also on the offseason roster.
Chiefs are having a remarkable off season.
By signing all their draft picks and two extensions?
Yes.
I’m a bit skeptical of the Edwards-Helaire selection considering the Chiefs rely so much on a committee. On the other hand, I really liked the Willie Gay pick at a position of dire need. Lucas Niang could take over for Fisher or Schwartz in the event of an injury as well.
The Chiefs might not have a ton of cap space to work with, but at least they locked up some core pieces in Mahomes and Jones. If they can continue to retain one of Hill or Kelce, they should be in decent shape for the near future. However, given their tight financial situation, it is imparative they continue to draft well: Especially in the back seven and on the offensive line
As a Raider fan, Edwards-Helaire was the player I least wanted Andy Reid to add to the offense. I think you underestimate what he will do getting the ball in space. He now gives Mahomes a big play check down option fml
I believe the Edwards-Helaire pick is going to payoff for Chiefs, as he will fit nicely into the rotation of backs there… He is a shifty, change of pace runner with good speed and power, as well has good hands, and he has Sideshow Bob as his QB…
He’s definitely talented, but spending a first round pick on a runningback in this day and age seems a bit questionable. Perhaps they could’ve traded down a bit
