The Buccaneers are chipping away at their rookie class. Sixth-round defensive tackle Khalil Davis has agreed to terms, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic (on Twitter). Meanwhile, fifth-round wide receiver Tyler Johnson has formally inked his deal, per an announcement from his agency (via Twitter).
The Bucs sent several scouts to the 2020 Outback Bowl between Minnesota and Auburn. At that game, they watched Johnson turn in the best game of his collegiate career – 12 catches for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Clearly, that left an impression. With the No. 161 overall pick, they snagged Johnson to help round out their WR group. This summer, he’ll look to carve out his spot on the depth chart behind stars Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
Davis, meanwhile, figures to support starting nose tackle Vita Vea. Even though he was a late pick, the Bucs are high on Davis’ skillset – at 308 pounds, he managed to run the 40-yard-dash at 4.75 seconds, good for sixth among all defensive linemen at the combine.
Here’s the full rundown of the Bucs’ class, via PFR’s 2020 NFL Draft tracker:
1-13: Tristan Wirfs, T (Iowa)
2-45: Antoine Winfield Jr., S (Minnesota)
3-76: Ke’Shawn Vaughn, RB (Vanderbilt)
5-161: Tyler Johnson, WR (Minnesota): Signed
6-194: Khalil Davis, DT (Nebraska): Signed
7-241: Chapelle Russell, OLB (Temple)
7-245: Raymond Calais, RB (LSU)
As a Raiders’ fan, I was really hoping Johnson would fall to us. I’d have skipped a WR in the 3rd and drafted Eliot.
I really like Johnson as well. I think his size and athleticism will allow him to emerge as an immediate weapon for Brady down in TB. As for Oakland, I liked the Bowden selection, as I believe he can be used in a variety of ways to exploit mismatches. However, I agree the Edwards pick seemed superfluous with the Raiders’ crowded receiver room. Like you said, they should’ve tried to bolster the interior defensive line
Given that rookies are due to report today, I find it funny that the Bucs have only signed 2 of their total 7 draft picks. Why are they dragging their feet? Every draft spot has a slot associated with it, so what are they haggling over this late in the game?
3rd round picks are notorious for signing later than everybody else due to contract language.
Teams and draft picks are most likely fighting over how the contract will be structured.
Calais played for the cajuns not the tigers
Tyler Johnson is a STEAL in round 5…he’ll play behind Evans and Godwin for a few years and when he’s a FA…mans in for the Brinks treatment!! Good luck TJ!!!
Brady is going to really try to utilize Johnson as soon as he is able. Johnson was an enormous reason Minnesota went on the run it did this year on the offensive side. He’s well rounded and is smart with his routes. Brady is notoriously fond of slot receivers-if Johnson is able to contribute this year, he and Godwin will be big pieces for Brady to target in the slot, and having both as good route runners gives Arians and Leftwich a range of options in disguising route trees and packages if they do choose. Given the receivers ahead of Johnson on the depth chart, I do not believe he will lead all rookies in statistics, but his impact will be significant if he is able to receive playing time.
