Colin Kaepernick‘s name is back in the NFL news cycle and he’s “more motivated than ever” to return to the field, a source close to the quarterback tells Mike Florio of PFT.
[RELATED: Hue Jackson Says He Wanted Browns To Sign Kaepernick]
Kaepernick – despite the “retired” tag briefly displayed on his NFL player page recently – remains a free agent. He hasn’t played since January 1, 2017 and over the last three years, Kaep’s camp has insisted that he wants to play in the NFL as he continued his charity and social justice efforts. Kaepernick, for the most part, has avoided interviews and public comments, but he did discuss his situation in an interview earlier this year.
“My desire to play football is still there,” Kaepernick said in February. “I still train five days a week. I’m ready to go, I’m ready for a phone call, tryout, workout at any point in time. I’m still waiting on the owners and their partners to stop running from this situation. So I hope I get a call this offseason. I’ll be looking forward to it.”
Kaepernick, 33 in November, would have some rust to shake off, but he’d also be returning to the game with fresh legs. It’s also worth noting that Father Time is kinder to quarterbacks than, say, running backs. Tom Brady (42), Drew Brees (41), and Ben Roethlisberger (38) can attest to that.
I find it highly unlikely that barring a lot of injuries that a team signs Kaep with Cam Newton still available. At this point, despite what people think, it’s becoming less and less about his views and more about the fact he hasn’t played an NFL snap in 4 years. Teams would also have to decide if the media circus is worth it for a likely backup.
I’m glad yours was the first comment because it is rational and true.
Kap isn’t that good lol his last season wasn’t all that. The older qbs are better he’s washed up stop crying man. You want 2 much money. Wont get it.
really, if the guy wants to play he should just lower his asking price. supposedly based on the last workout he probably could have been a fine backup. problem is he wants to get paid like a starter, and not just an average starter but a good one at that.
That’s the issue with both Kaep and Cam. It doesn’t help their cases that Winston, Flacco and Dalton all signed for low range one-year deals to be backups. If Kaep accepts a similar deal, he’ll be on a team before Cam will.
he hasn’t played professionally for 4 years and his last couple of actual playing weren’t that special either to say the least. 11-24 over his last 3 playing seasons, isn’t going to get him a job anytime soon.
Flacco still overpaid.
But Flacco’s got a ring and he’s not a piece of s hit like kapernik is
Agreed
Kaepernick lost the battle, but won the war.
I doubt he ever plays in the NFL again but, Goodell, Brees, the entire NFL machinery, etc. are all now actively working to fulfill his agenda.
I still don’t see an individual team taking the plunge on him, though. Even if his activism is no longer a deal breaker, him being out of football for so long probably is.
But, we’ll see.
I agree with you sort of. The owners still have a right to hire and fire who they want. I feel like someone may want to do the “right” thing and sign him for the PR. But then what happens when a player has to be cut in order to make a statement. I just Understand what he’s done in the last month to make everyone be against him to now everyone’s lined up to kiss his rearend.
The big problem with signing Kap is cutting him if he’s no good. Not many teams have the cojones to take that risk. He could be OK, even serviceable. But if he’s awful, you couldn’t get rid of him without becoming a social pariah.
We go through the runaround every year on Kaep coming back, and continue to harp on teams for shying away from him over the pub that might come with him. Yet the first sentence in every article about him revolves around kneeling in some capacity. Why in the world would any team want to sign him when he hasn’t seen a snap, taken a hit, or kept up to date on new schemes in 4 years. Tons of press around, and no production from him. It’s all lose. We need to move on from this guy. Next.
To much baggage, 4 years since he last played, plus injuries = No way, he probably would only take a perfect deal anyways, he gets enough dough without getting smashed on Sundays.
He can screw off
Retire this narrative people don’t get hired when they sue their employer. Not to mention he was offered contracts but he turned them down cause they weren’t enough money and moved his tryout so nobody could attend
That is wrong and you know it. The NFL threw him a shady tryout—little notice, poorly organized and it was just a “Well, we did it so people will believe we owners aren’t colluding against him.”
No, the nfl gave him a tryout where most of the league showed up. Kaepernick showed up with an antifa camera crew and wanted to market his workout video. The nfl, rightly, said no. And Kaepernick went to some high school to shoot his video. It was reportedly obvious Kaepernick had no intention of working out for teams, as his video shoot was just that, a video shoot.
Facts destroy leftists.
100% correct
Dodgethis, a representative from many of the league’s teams does not equal “most of the league.”
And even among the representatives who did attend the NFL’s hastily prepared workout, it’s not clear many were even at the level of talent evaluator and/or decision maker who would typically attend the combine or a top-of-the-draft collegiate pro day.
Right on the money brother… leftist’s destroy everything they touch from every major city in America! This dude is the shinning example of exactly what you don’t want on your team or near your franchise. His loyalty is to him and the second he didn’t like something that coach would be a racist or the owner or whoever, you would t even be able to get rid of that headache
I didn’t realize the Russians had invaded this site.
Sure looks like it. Place is crawling with gammons
Please leave the politics out of this. It’s a sports site. That being said his last year in the league wasn’t great from a playing perspective, he’s been out four years and yes there would be a media circus around a player who realistically is coming in and a backup. Name a situation that makes sense for him to come in and play? If you have an up and coming QB (let’s use Mayfield or Kyler as an example) would want Kaep on your team with that kind of attention? I’d say the only team with a question at QB is Jacksonville and maybe New England.
“Please leave the politics out of this. It’s a sports site.”
Sports has always been about politics. If you don’t like it, you are free to no longer visit this site.
If it was only about sports then Kap would be a NFL QB right now. Try again.
Uh no. Kaepernick is not an nfl caliber quarter back. The nfl cares about money above all else. If Kaepernick could make the league money, he would have a job. Youre a pathetic excuse for a human.
Kaepernick was never a starting caliber qb.
why is someone a “pathetic excuse for a human” when they simply post an opinion? Jesus Christ man, people can’t even discuss sports without turning into name-calling children. How hard is it to say “i disagree” and then move on? Name-calling adds nothing to the discussion. Grow up and let’s talk sports.
Nothing says lets all love each other more than begrading and hating
Heres my take. I dont care if Kaep ever plays again or not. He’s obviously not replacing Mahomes. All i ask is on sunday when i watch my game im watching football. Not 3 letter news networks.
“More motivated than ever”…. maybe if he was that motivated to become a better QB while he was actually playing, he wouldn’t have lost his job.
Too bad Kap you’re just not good enough.
I see the issue as the 49ers didn’t think he was a starter and tried to lower his pay. He wouldn’t accept pay cut. Then his demands were too high as people didn’t want him as starter. Then the whole moving the tryout. He thinks he’s still a starter but maybe he should take back up pay and prove it? All the other things aside he’s his own worse enemy on getting back in field.
We will see if a team cares more about virtue signaling than having a back up who can throw a touch pass or read a defense. As a Niners fan, he was hard to watch once the league caught on to the fact that he would make one read and run it if his first read wasn’t open.
Bottom line, if kneeling were profitable he’d have a job. That’s all anybody cares about.
Guess who’s still not going to get a job?
It was for Nike unfortunately who was able to use Kap as a martyr for a clothing line.
His mechanics suck, his footwork is terrible, and he can’t read defenses. What team wouldn’t want that?
Shhhhh don’t tell the people who are convinced Kap is better than most NFL starting QBs that.
Uh huh, so you really believe all those duds that the Steelers and Texans signed when their starting QBs went down were better than Kap? Wow, that’s a trump level of stupidity.
As a lifelong 49ers fan, you sir are a moron. Kaepernick hasn’t been good since his rookie year when he lost alex smith the Superbowl. The entire league figured out Kaepernick in his first off-season and he was garbage ever since. He never improved, never grew, never advanced. He has stayed in the news only because he was on a Superbowl team. He is hard to watch. Can’t read the defense, doesn’t know how to pass, isn’t fast enough to be a run first qb. Didn’t start kneeling until he lost his job. The blackface isn’t fooling anyone. Go look at pictures from Colin’s rookie year, and then look at pictures from now. He’s a fake. He’s a racist, and he’s a terrible football player.
But keep on advertising that you think orange man is bad, as it just labels you a moron to those capable of critical thinking.
Yes Duck Hodges won games for the Steelers and Mason Rudolph was their young draft pick who they needed to see get game action. Watson gor hurt 3 years ago. Thats too far back to go lmao.
Supposedly, he turned down offers in the past because he only wanted to be a starter with a sizable contract; if he is willing to be a backup for reasonable money, give him a shot.
Tell him to go riot with his pig socks maybe the cops will shoot him and we’ll get this scum bag off this earth
A black guy definitely banged this dude’s girl lol
Wldv chopped his pen is off
You’re right. I mean if anyone’s gonna bang your sister it’s gonna be you. Ma! Get the Pabst! I’m sliding in like Earnhardt! Yee-Haw!
Black lives matter I agree but there shldnt be a movement because they can’t get out of their own way stop sticking up for them they kill each other but we can’t kill them cops are more scared of them and for good reason!
“…but we can’t kill them…”
Uhh, I think you are supposed to pretend to not think or feel this way.
Meaning the cops I wldnt kill one of them even though they prob wld kill me if I came into the “hood”.
Unless you are a cop, it would be “they”. Instead you said “we”.
Specifically, you said “…but we can’t kill them…”.
Furthermore, even in your clarification, you appear to be saying that if black criminals kill black people, then it should be OK for white cops to do the same.
Regardless of race, should cops be held to…
A) the same standards as
B) lower standards than
C) higher standards than
…criminals?
Yes same but they are more scared of a black person so their more prone to pulling the trigger cuz they are way more violent and dangerous.
Interesting.
So, what you are saying is that if they weren’t so scary, the cops wouldn’t have to shoot them?
It’s really their own fault when you think about it that way, huh?
Yes don’t be stupid unless ur African American are u more scared of blacks when u walk down a dark alley or a group of whites don’t lie to me the blacks are more dangerous so cops are the same blacks have a higher violence and crime rate so they are more scared get the blacks under control end the hood get them some fathers……..
OK…
So, if there were a black person who was potentially interested in decreasing the likelihood of scaring the police and, thus, lowering their odds of being shot, what might they want to do?
Dress like Urkel? Preemptively handcuff themselves before they go out in public? Any advice?
One isn’t gonna do the job they dug a hole to deep I’m not the one with the answer but they definitely shldnt be blaming everyone else
Dude, you’re probably arguing with a 12 yr old. Ar least I hope so. If this person can vote then what is the scary thing.
Or if I cld run for president ……….
I don’t think there really scared just more about losing there jobs
You see in most white neighborhoods we grow up fighting and it comes natural
Not drive by some ones house and shoot at 14 ppl on a porch
You’ve obviously equated hollywood fiction with reality. Grow up.
He’s a dumb shv Artie
I’m more motivated than ever to…uh, uh…never mind.
uh, uh……..sign another multi-million dollar deal with Nike?
Wow. Racist, ignorant white privilege showing up in the comments today
Typical self hating white person comment
White privilege me nothing.
We have no privilege they just shoot themselves in the leg time and time again go to the tell me how many dead bodies u find we’re not privileged we make lives for ourselves
Josh Johnson a black man got signed by Washington in 2018 and people got mad it wasn’t Kap. Was that white privilege???
No. That was called owner collusion.
If folks want to say “Kaep’s been out of the NFL for 3/4 years” then don’t bring up Josh Johnson. He was also out of the NFL for 3 years before Washington signed him. Are we now saying Josh Johnson is/was better than Kaep for that job?
Correction. Before Johnson was signed, he hadn’t thrown a pass since 2011 and had a career record of 1-5 as a starter. More qualified than Kaep?
Josh Johnson went to the CFL for a bit.
XFL
at his best he was 4000 years combined on the ground and air. 21 td against 8 picks and 4 rushing TD’s.
the game has changed to much and he has gotten to old. he’s a backup at best.
not to mention the media circus to follow him.
Josh Johnson went to the CFL for a bit.
When the kneeling started in 2016 his message was lost because of the other crap he was pulling. Wearing pig socks and a Castro shirt didn’t help.
Lotta good comments on here today, really bought a nice ray of sunshine my way. November is going to really be awesome.
Unless he’s willing to sign for vet minimum and compete for a backup job, I don’t see it. Teams have film of old Kaepernick. Did he really get better in the three years off? Seems doubtful. Asking more than the vet minimum says that coming back isn’t as important. Teams really aren’t inclined to sign a guy who wants a lot of money when others who are younger and might develop will play for less.
They already paid him go away money…his nuisance suit was easier to pay off then fight. And since he had a price I guess he wasn’t in it for the message after all. His chance at redemption and his workout went over like a circus due to his actions, even Hue and others washed their hands of him at that point.
He wants to be a martyr, not play football. He was seeking 20 mil per year as a back up….
Exactly, but martyrs die for the cause on principle, this guy had a price and cashed that check.
