lot of buy-low talent here
For some reason I see Trubinsky in Pittsburgh in 2021 and thus will begin the ugly hunt for the next franchise QB
I see Trubisky in Pittsburgh also in 2021. Who else to learn the great art of rape from other than Ben
Hey. That’s Titty-kisser Trubisky to you
That’s cold dude!! Honestly there will be NO Pigskin next year or maybe 2021.
We need to keep our country shutdown for the next 18-24 months
Marlon Humphrey Marshon Latimore
So if we call this a 18-14 split that works out to a 56.25% chance of getting a decent return on first round picks through 3 years. That rate obviously takes a nose dive if you trade back for more draft capital in later rounds.
That’s not true. 5 out of there top 10 were declined. Only #8 has a new contract. Drafting high means nothing. Which is why I laugh at ‘report cards’ from the drafts and most every sports site gives A’s & B’s to 80% of the teams. Only GB really got knocked for their 1st round pick this year. The other 31 teams all got ‘passing grades’.
You won’t find one GM that thinks drafting high isn’t significant. You’ll have a hard time finding any draft that turned out as bad as the 2017 top 10 picks.
GM’s love to draft high due to fan speculation. “We got #2 or #4 rocking pick/player!!”
The 2018 top 10 is nothing great:
1. Mayfield, below 500 (Team drafted in top 10 again)
2. Barkley, very good. (Team drafted in top 10 again)
3. Sam Darnold sub 500 (Team drafted in top 10 again)
4. D Ward sub 500 D (Team drafted in top 10 again)
5. Chubb been hurt (Team drafted in top 10 again)
6. Q Nelson stud
7. J Allen made the playoffs
8. R smith released (Team drafted in top 10 again)
9. M McGlinchely solid T
10. Rosen traded after 1 year (Team drafted in top 10 again)
That’s a lot of ‘high value picks’ that haven’t improved their team overall. 7 out of 10 teams drafted in there top 10 two years later. Including 2 QB’s.
Lamar Jackson, by far, has crushed the 3 top 10 QB’s in the same draft. He went 32nd.
Technically Denver traded out of the top 10 in the 2019 draft.
@JJB Using the fact that many teams drafted in the top 10 then drafted again in the top 10 the next year is looking at it in a vacuum. Football is not a sport like basketball where one player can turn the entire team from terrible to playoff caliber. Usually teams that draft in the top 10 have to draft in the top 10 for a least a couple or few years.
GMs don’t want to draft high.
Huge money guarantees on lotto tickets.
Much better to sit back and find gems with lower bonuses
@JJ. Grades on this years draft are completely irrelevant. We’ll have to wait 3 years to make a fair comparison to the 2017 class results shown here.
Go back and look at the grades given to this class of 2017. I bet you would see CNNSI, CBS sports, FOX sports et al. And you’ll see all of the top 10 picks were B’s or higher. 3 years later, half have their contracts declined.
Pro Football Focus, a revered site, has 13 A’s, 12 B’s, 6 C’s and 1 D for this year’s draft.

We all know that completely bogus grading. 1 team with a failing grade? 25 teams w/ B’s or higher? Please.
By Halloween, half the teams will be sub 500. Always is.
Are you saying that halfway through the season, half of the teams in the league will lose half of their games or more?! That seems a lot more like simple math than evaluating draft classes.
I do agree though, that draft grades are nothing more than speculation.
Its the same principal. If 25 out 32 teams have B’s or higher for their drafts (every year by every sports site), then why are half the teams eliminated from the playoffs by Oct 30th (thereabout)?
The one D grade this draft was for GB. W/O question, Aaron Rogers is 5x the QB as the other A’s B’s. Heck he had 1 WR and 1 RB last year and went 13-3. I’m not a Rogers’ guy, but to say his Packs are going to be below the Fins, Giants, Jags & Bengals (4 A’s graded by a paid website) is ridiculous.
In fact, CBS sports 2021 mock has the Jags, Bengals, Skins, Fins, and Panthers listed as their top 5 drafting teams shown today. So how can all those teams (Giants listed at 6) get A’s this draft and still be predicted to suck next year?
It has nothing to do with their record though. It’s a (mostly nonsense) projection of the careers that the guys they picked may or may not have. Nobody drafts a rookie thinking it will take them from #1 pick to SB champ in one year.
I’m agreeing with you that the grades are useless, but your premise is completely misguided. Thats all
I spent a few years a PFF before coming here and at that time they used a simple +1, 0, -1 system to grade each players performance on every play, which is of course a ridiculous approach. That is basically saying that the Mark Sanchez butt fumble is only 2 points worse than this sensational run by Walter Payton link to youtube.com
Tj Watt C-
Lol
Lot of guys in prove it years. Charlton is on his 3rd team already .
14/32 1st RD picks not getting option picked up. That’s terrible. I wonder if that’s a record.
Is it terrible or is it teams say that these guys aren’t worth the large jump in contract they would receive. I don’t believe Dupree is worth 15mil this season for the Steelers but that’s what he’s going to get. Just because they weren’t all picked up doesn’t mean that all of them are total busts.
Dupree’s case is a franchise tag. His 5th year was $9M last year
Nice first round for CBs wow… 4/5 options picked up and 3 of them are very highly regarded already (Lattimore, Humphrey, White)
Wow, four top 5 picks aren’t getting picked up. Has that ever happened? Has there been a worse performing top 5?
It’s crazy.
I’m surprised no one mentioned it before you. Losing half the guys is not horrible. Losing the 2-3-4-5 guys is pretty dismal.
I know he is a hothead but it was still very surprising to see Fournette get declined. He is a productive player and thr Jags would benifit waiting until year 5 to let him walk.
You answered your own point. LF is a productive player… Therefore the Jags must dump him! Anyone that plays Madden runs their franchise better than the Jags.
All in on Fournette
Maybe it’s because I live on the east coast, but I don’t really hear much about Solomon Thomas being such a bust. He probably would have been 2nd overall if the Bears hadn’t made their absurdly stupid trade, yet he’s provided almost no value. One of the biggest busts of the last decade or two.
I think he gets overshadowed by the Trubisky fiasco and the 49ers’ success in spite of his incompetence. Plus, defensive linemen are often overlooked by the mainstream media. Without a doubt one of the most unproductive draft picks in recent memory though
From a Raiders’ perspective, this makes me feel a tad better about the Conley trade. Getting a #3 for a guy that won’t be optioned is not bad.
Now i just need the #3 & #5 back for Brown,and I will be re-happy again.
