Jadeveon Clowney wouldn’t mind returning to the Seahawks, but a reunion doesn’t seem too likely. The defensive end would have to take far less money than what the Seahawks were previously offering him in order to facilitate a return, a league source tells ESPN.com’s Brady Henderson.
[RELATED: Eagles, Ravens Interested In Clowney?]
Publicly, GM John Schneider hasn’t ruled out the former No. 1 overall pick, though he has hinted that its not in the cards. In early March, Clowney was reportedly asking for $21MM per year. In late March, he dropped his ask to $17-$18MM per year. Now, we’re in May, and most of the NFL’s dollars have dried up. The Seahawks, meanwhile, do not have an offer currently on the table for him.
The Seahawks have already made improvements to the front seven by adding Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa. Mayowa’s one-year deal is reportedly worth $3MM while the figures on Irvin’s contract are not yet known. What we do know is that the Seahawks have less than $20MM in cap space at present and they still have other needs to address. They also found edge help in the draft by selecting outside linebacker Darrell Taylor (second round) and defensive end Alton Robinson (fifth round).
The Browns and Titans have been heavily linked to Clowney and the Eagles and Ravens may have some level of interest in him. At this stage of free agency, he stands as the best available edge rusher on the market, even though he finished 2019 with just three regular season sacks.
Collusion?
Not worth what he wants!! This is on himself!!
Or over rated? 3 sacks last year and we wants how much per year? He’s a joke
You realize there’s more to a defensive lineman than sacks, no? I hope?
when you have the talent he does and only get 3 sacks and miss 3 games. your not going to get what you want. no team feel he worth it. he need to have a prove it year comback year play well than he will get paid. dont just expect you get big money,
Ok let’s take both as fact.
Seattle runs a 4-3 press which isnt great for LB sacks.
And Clowney is overvaluing himself.
Both are true
@dynamite. I’ts clearly collusion. The Seahawks are conspiring with Gary Bettman to string Clowney along until the expansion NHL Seattle team can move in for the kill.
Living off that drafts status, not production.
If he had received a better offer than the Seahawks, he would’ve taken it. The longer he waits will not translate to a better offer per annum, only in $ guaranteed or years. Things still are not acrimonious with the Hawks (see Reed getting hand slapped for the jersey number assumption) but Clowney has the Hawks’ cap completely hijacked. There’s a lot of talent they could do after (Ryan, Reid, Griffin) if the door to Clowney was closed.
The NFL out earns all other major sports. It could easily raise the salary cap and pay for healthcare for retired players, but chooses not to. It’s a joke. Clowney is for sure asking too much, but the NFL needs to wise up, salaries are on the rise and football players like Clowney are only going ask for more, and they should.
There was so much fuss about the Clowney trade. In the end both teams lost and it was an insignificant move.
Seahawks probably don’t make the playoffs last year without Clowney. He was on a one year deal so they knew thats all they were getting him for as he was to be a FA this year no matter what. Him resigning has nothing to do with winning a trade. It was a good trade last year and he made their defense better so I wouldn’t say they lost. Unless every trade that doesn’t lead to a championship then I guess 99% of all sports trades both teams lose.
No its not championship of bust for all trades. But Clowney was not the difference between making the playoffs and not. The biggest factor was the comp pick they were thought to be getting when he walks as a free agent. He clearly wont sign enough to net them a 3rd rounder back. Granted the Texans wasted the pick from SEA on Conley.
Comp pick time has ended. Hawks aren’t getting any comp pick for him no matter what he signs for now
Afk711- I beg to differ. Clowney absolutely terrorized Jimmy G in SF on MNF. He was a one man wrecking ball. I realize one game doesn’t determine your season or your chances of making the playoffs however Seattle’s season would’ve been very different had they lost that wk 10 game at Levi’s Stadium. Seattle would not be playing for the NFC West on week 17 without that win vs a Divisional opponent.
Seattle also didn’t give up much for Clowney- the Hawks essentially traded away Frank Clark (to KC,) a 3rd rd pick to HOU along w a rotational piece (Martin) and a player (Mingo) about to be released for 7 draft picks and Jadeveon Clowney. Keep in mind, the Hawks only paid half of Clowney’s salary- $8M
Greed will get you one thing and that is the unemployment line
Lol this guys not gonna be “unemployed”. Jesus you guys hate seeing a black man hae the audacity of wanting his due
Stop making this about race. This is a sports website; Not a social justice page
how is this about race why thing have to take it that far. any smart man will know he asking for too much for a down year were he didnt start every game and miss 3. if he was smart he take the most he can get prove him self than get paid. but no he wants what he wants and no team biting
Browns and lions will take them, because honestly those two teams will take anyone too win there first super bowl or even be at one
Excellent news! All right now… Who wants an over-priced, injury prone football player?
As a Seahawks fan I don’t care if it’s him or Griffen. Just bring in one of them.
Clowney is only a force once in a while.
He’s good against the run but Griffin is better against the pass.
Clowney is not worth $15 million or more. Imo.
Wow! He better lower his asking price if a team that just traded for him a year ago doesn’t want him back.
The issue is him seeing Bud Dupree getting 18Mil, so asking for 21Mil without realizing Bud got franchise tagged
The Saints are making moves ( Larry Warford RT) to free up $ for a one year deal. Clowney may be dropping to the right .
