The Seahawks don’t seem interested in re-signing Jadeveon Clowney and it could be a while before the edge rusher joins any NFL team. Jay Glazer of The Athletic hears that the free agent defensive end wants to wait a while – “perhaps as late as the summer” – before signing.
Clowney isn’t the only notable vet willing to wait for the right deal. Former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is also said to be sitting tight, though he’s opening up to the idea of serving as someone’s backup in 2020. Clowney’s situation is different, but he might have to ease his own expectations in terms of salary.
When free agency opened, Clowney was said to be asking for $21MM/year. Weeks later, that ask was reduced to around $17-$18MM per annum. Since then, the Seahawks have pretty much tackled their edge needs with players like Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa. The Titans are said to still have interest in the former No. 1 overall pick; ditto for the Ravens and Eagles. The Browns – long believed to be a frontrunner – are also lurking. Clowney would profile as a potential upgrade over Olivier Vernon, whose contract could be easily wiped from the books.
Clowney didn’t play up to par last year in Seattle as he finished with just three sacks in 13 contests. However, he’s still only 27 and he has 32 career sacks to his credit, not to mention a No. 1 pick pedigree. Eventually, Clowney will find a solid one-year platform opportunity, but it might not come before the end of the month.
Eagles have the cap space for a 1 year deal. I could see them signing him
I wouldn’t hate that. He’d have some explaining to do in that locker room though.
if clowney help the Eagles possibly get to a Superbowl that would be the best way to apologize to Carson Wentz and the eagle fans
Let it go.
Why? He wasn’t called for anything and nobody but the Eagles fans and Wentz himself started whining about it.
Apologize for what, tackling your brittle QB?
I didn’t realize that leading with your helmet into the back of another player’s helmet as he’s already going to the ground was a “tackle”
AndyMeyer..How much was he fined and how long suspended for that hit?
Apologize for what? A clean hit on a soft QB?
If you think that was a “clean hit on a soft QB”, good for you.
And way to go for calling a player “soft” for getting a concussion. That’s low
Hey Andy…. how much was he fined and how long was he suspended? Just curious….. get a clue bro
Woodlawn: My point is he got off easy. My question is where do they draw the line? If you honestly believe that it was a “clean” hit and no repercussions were necessary, that’s fine. That’s your opinion. Agree to disagree. Apologies for me having a conscience
I’m not going to call that hit “clean” but I think we tend to vilify guys that make mistakes in the heat of battle. His whole job is to get to the qb and take him down in a second or less he has to pull up and back off. It’s a violent game and it’s difficult to go in and out of that mental state. They have to suspend/fine guys to try to curb the injuries but sometimes I think a guy just makes a mistake and doesn’t make him a villain
My conclusion is they dont like him in Philly.
Prob not a fit
Oh please. If Wentz wasn’t soft as baby feces the Eagles wouldn’t have had to take a QB with their 2nd round pick. Nick Foles lucked out and brought your sorry organization a championship. Deal with your future.
I realize they already have Vernon and Garrett, but the Browns have a ton of cap space. If they could get Clowney on a one year deal, I think they should do it. Rotate them around and keep them fresh or get creative with your defensive sets. Further, Vernon’s got a pretty extensive injury history.
They could also just straight up cut him. Vernon’s basically just a waste of capital at this point
As if Clowney isn’t super injury prone too..
Would be total Browns move to see them eat Vernons dead cap, load on Clowney contract, and then watch Clowney miss half the season.
Vernon’s contract is non-guarenteed. They can cut him without any repercussions
Well in that case they’d still have traded a pro bowl guard for a worthless linebacker
If it’s on a 1 yr deal gettelman should be fined for malpractice
And they don’t sign him
“…the free agent defensive end wants to wait a while – ‘perhaps as late as the summer’ – before signing.”
Translated: “Nobody anywhere is offering anything.”
Bingo
Correction: No one anywhere is offering the kind of money he wants.
Translation: he waiting until June 1st cuts for the ravens to free up cap space…ps the eagles and Seahawks offered him what he wanted
Nice to see that Clowney’s agent has some time available to add to the Rumors …
Actually Seahawks are on record as to not offering him what he wanted.
They said they made a fair offer.
I’d give him a one year deal for 5-7 million…. that’s it. Clowney is overrated.
You do realize that Bud Dupree is making 18million this season right?
People who think Clowney is worth as much as a backup tight end don’t tend to have much awareness about different players around the league.
Whoever gets Clowney is going to get a steal. The NFL analytical skills are archaic and everyone is just looking at his sack rate individually but not considering his impact on the team’s pressure rate.
This league is the dumbest sport in the world from an evaluation perspective. Just look at all of the late round pick successes as evidence. Viewing the at-home NFL draft only reinforced my belief in the idiocy of the NFL’s leadership league wide.
Soccer could use more fans.
What? Lol. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Such a dumb attempt at a “burn”
Ya not sure what this guys talking about.
However soccer is cool bcuz ppl like him dont watch it.
Locker room cancer, not suprised.
I think it has more to do with him asking for 10mil more than hes worth longterm
Love how the writer of the story says Clowney “ has the pedigree of a number 1”. Years after that he shows he probably shouldn’t have been 1 and doesn’t have the pedigree.
It’s actually an improper use of “pedigree’ anyway. Had Clowney’s father played in the NFL and been a star player then the word could be used in the right context.
“the background or history of a person or thing, especially as conferring distinction or quality.”
Would that not fit?? Obviously, the typical definition does not fit, but that sure seems like it was used correctly..
It’s a rather small infraction but Goodell would probably levy a fine and order an investigation.
Pedigree should only be used at the climax of the match to ensur a 3 count.
Three sacks? Where I come from that means over paid…. good luck with someone spending big bucks
Did you know that theres 2 different front 7 schemes in the NFL?
One is called a 3-4 in which the outside linebackers are responsible for pass rush.
The other is a 4-3 in which linebackers are mainly responsible for gap and run stoppage.
The Seattle Seahawks play a 4-3-press in which the linebackers bare huge responsibility in protecting the underneath zones, and are required to play a more conservative style
He was never worth that number 1 pick to begin with. He turned one big hit into a huge, undeserved paycheck. He’s lazy and selfish, always has been.
Yes very lazy.
He didnt work hard at all to be able to bench 350 lb.
Hey jkoms, be sarcastic if you want to. Me, I’m glad the Texans’ team chaplain is here to tell us that inside information, because I’ve got a LOT of questions about Bill O’Brien.
I wish New Orleans could sign him.
Lol overrated 3 sacks, what will he bring to Saints? He should disappear in Jax.
Bottom line he’s overrated and not worth the money he is asking. He’s injury prone also.
His best bet is to take a look ball offer to a team that is a contender. There is always a dumb team that will jump to sign a player after one good year if the ball out. Larry Brown anyone
