The 49ers will turn down Solomon Thomas‘ fifth-year option, as Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. This was the expected move – Thomas has been a letdown for SF since being selected No. 3 overall back in 2017.

The Stanford product started at least 12 games in each of his first two seasons but was first string just three times in 2019. After playing on just 41% of the Niners snaps, he’s more of a role player than the star SF envisioned.
In 2017, Thomas was widely regarded as the second-best defensive lineman in the class, behind only Myles Garrett. On draft night, the Niners sent their No. 2 overall pick to the Bears and tapped Thomas, even though they already had a loaded defensive front featuring Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner. With that, the Bears got Mitchell Trubisky and the 49ers got a king’s ransom for sliding down just one spot. Unfortunately, they missed on Thomas.
In three seasons, Thomas has registered six sacks in total while starting just 28 games. Now that the 49ers have first round pick Javon Kinlaw in the fold, they have little reason to commit to Thomas and risk being stuck with his salary in the event of an injury.
Unfortunately for Bears they missed even worse when you look at cost involved
And the other QBs available.
Thomas stinks. Trubisky does too but he plays a position where the Bears can at least trade him for maybe a 3rd round pick.
Anyone that gives up more than 6th rounder for Mitch should be fired
Even mediocre QBs have value. Tyrod Taylor got a 3rd and the Browns knew they would be dumping him in a year. Foles and his terrible contract got a 4th. Just how it is.
Those guys have proven themselves in one way or another. Trubisky hasn’t done anything remotely vindicating.
Trubisky had a 6 TD performance against the Bucs that resulted in Bruce Arians taking over as HC in Tampa Bay… so that has to be vindication of some sort.
Agree with Pat . Tyrod got the Bill’s to the playoffs.
Mitch is literally trash. Another Blake Bortles
Trash
I’d be curious to know what the niners got from the rest of the picks they received from the bears.
There’s an nbcsports article outlining those picks and subsequent trades of them etc.
Let’s just say one of the picks 2017 3rd round 67 overall was traded by the 49ers to Saints and became Alvin Kamara.
The 4th rounder was used by 49ers to move up and get Reuben Foster.
And 2018 3rd rounder became Fred Warner
I beleive the scouting report shared the moment he was drafted was something like: “didn’t have a great college career and people question his desire to play football.” The 49ers have no one to blame but themselves!
As a Cowboys fan I wouldn’t mind if they traded a 6th to SF for Thomas. They did it for Quin and he got 11.5 sacks last year. Maybe a change of venue would help him.
Robert Quin is a proven beast tho.
Sol has just been a slacker
