The Vikings are still in the mix for Trent Williams, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com (on Twitter) hears. Earlier this month, the Vikings offered up a Day 3 pick to the Redskins, Cronin hears. Heading into Day 2 of the draft, the Vikings still have the draft capital in place to put a package together, so a deal remains possible.
Of course, it all comes down to what the Vikings are willing to offer for Williams – who would require a sizable contract extension upon arrival – and what the Redskins are willing to accept. Throughout the offseason, they’ve indicated they wanted at least a second-rounder for the multiple-time Pro Bowler.
To our knowledge, no one has met that asking price. But, after several suitors and potential suitors found left tackle help in the first round, the Redskins will have to dial back their expectations. The Browns were the frontrunners for Williams; they took Alabama standout Jedrick Wills Jr. with the No. 10 overall pick. The Jets, who were never willing to send a second-round pick for Williams anyway, grabbed Louisville’s Mekhi Becton at No. 11. The Buccaneers almost traded tight end O.J. Howard for Williams earlier this year, but they moved on and likely slammed the door shut with their move up for Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs.
The market for Williams has shrunk and chances of a reconciliation seem remote, so the Vikings could get one of the league’s premier protectors for pennies on the dollar.
If I was Rick I would be offering Reiff and pick 89 for Williams! Then we could draft a tackle in rounds 3-4 and let them sit behind Williams to learn or move O’Neill over there after Williams leaves. Our offensive line would be so much better afterwards.
Also the Vikings need to hold on to Harris and do not involve him in this trade
Reiff is overpaid given his level of play which means his contract would be a dump and worth negative draft capital perhaps at a 5th or 6th round level. If you recall Texans traded a 2nd to get rid of Osweiller’s negative contract.
Pick 89 at end of 3rd rd by itself might be enough to pull off the trade but a day 3 pick (4th-6th rdr) clearly isn’t enough. If Skins were smart though they’d offer a 4 year $72M contract (3yr $57.5M, $19.2M/yr extension) with $40M guaranteed as Williams is loved in the locker room and they’d improve the team chemistry and morale not to mention protecting their rookie QB and setting up the ground game a lot better. Williams has had this extended period off to rest and heal and like Gronk he will come back with a vengeance and playing opposite Chase in practice would bring out the best in both players.
All about leverage and both the Redskins and Trent Williams are seeing it disappear quickly…….
A pretty big reward for a player whose missed not only the entire 2019 season, but multiple games in the several years preceding it…and as far as his All Pro status….he was the last warm body that could actually play….All Pro is like batting .300 today….nobody cares as its a worthless award….1st team All Pro….different story but he wasn’t in that category.
I tend to agree with you. The Vikings may have to add another late round pick for the contract cost, but that is the makings of a mutually beneficial trade.
Our lates pick in the third round for Washington s Williams. Redskins have no Leverage
a late 5th round pick is what it will take, Washington has no leverage, and they wont pay for someone who wont play. WIlliams already sat our on season
If anyone ponies up a 5th rounder and Washington bites, its a huge steal. Lions have multiple day 3 picks. Could send 5 & 7 still worth it.

Williams won’t sit a whole season again. So Skins either get what they want or they call Williams bluff and force him to suit up for them and earn his next contract elsewhere. If he leaves next year the Skins get a 3rd round compensatory pick, so I don’t see them taking less than a 3rd.
Broncos have 3 3rd round picks and 2 7th rounders and need OL help. They have a decent amount of cap space (17.5M) with almost all offensive skill position players and QB on rookie deals. I hope they put a deal together for Williams. Something like a 3rd and 7th? Would probably have to clear another 5M-10M in cap space, but they can do that by cutting just a couple aging or underperforming guys.
trade you Reiff for a 3rd
The leverage is they don’t trade him and either force him to play or sit out again. And good luck getting 18 million a year as a 33 y/o who hasn’t played in over 2 years. Which makes him sitting again entirely unlikely. They could very easily keep him, assume he’ll do the smart thing and play and get his last year of the contract done.
You couldn’t be more wrong. They hold NO leverage. He doesnt HAVE to play, and he has made more than enough money in his career to sit out another year and not be financially burdened by it. And IF the Redskins decided they would rather go the route of sitting him a full season/not trading him and he sits the year, it’ll make Washington an even less attractive FA destination than they already are due to keeping their talent hostage. This whole saga has been visible by the entire league.
Man, if you think that Williams wants to sit out another year while he gets another year older and that much further from actually playing…..WOW! He’ll have to play to be paid….its that simple and if doesn’t look like he’s at all ready to walk away from the pay!
As for “attractive free agent destinations”…..they are ALWAYS the teams that will pay the most for talent…
He wouldn’t be asking for what he is asking for if he didn’t want to play….every move he makes screams pay me now!
As far as “saga” yes you are right….owners are watching as the league was never a democracy!
Man, you are so right….and his contract demands will probably be to get much of it guaranteed which will simply not happen if he even tries to sit out another season….it wouldn’t matter at all then, as any contract a team signed him to wouldn’t have lots of guaranteed money tied into it meaning he could get cut very quickly if he actually performed like a 33 year old lineman, who used to be a LT but hasn’t played in over 2 years! Yikes!
Finally, someone else who gets it. The skins get what they want, or they hold him.
Good lord it would be nice to have a good LT for once….Vikings O-Line has been the weakness for years!!! Would love to see the Vikings trade up into the very early 2nd round and grab Cleveland or Jones at tackle. We have 2 6th round and 3 7th round picks I’d love to see them package with other early picks to slide up in 2 and 3 or package together with a 5th for Williams.
I’d rather trade up and grab winfield jr at safety or jaylon johnson or even one of the defensive ends. Kind of tired of the revolving door of rookie OLinemen that under perform and leave us trying to solve that problem over and over with more rookies. Pad your D and look to snag vet talent like Williams to help the young boys already in play
There are 11 guys on the Bears defense praying the Vikings give up the store for this bum.
The Bears should find another 42 guys that make them worthy opposition.
