The Cowboys and Dak Prescott have had “very positive” contract talks within the last two weeks, according to a source who spoke with David Moore of the Dallas Morning News (Twitter link). Apparently, things are trending in the right direction for the Cowboys and their franchise quarterback, regardless of whether he joins the Cowboys for the start of their online (and voluntary) OTAs.

Prescott was kept out of free agency by way of a one-year, $31MM+ exclusive franchise tag. It’s a handsome sum, no doubt, but the QB is aiming for something in the neighborhood of Russell Wilson‘s contract. That deal, worth $35MM per annum, is the richest in the NFL.
This saga has surpassed the one-year mark. Prescott turned down a $33MM-per-year offer last year and has held firm on that front. It has now affected his offseason participation. While that ordinarily would not be a major issue, the Cowboys figure to have new wrinkles offensively after hiring Mike McCarthy. Kellen Moore remains OC, but Dallas’ offense will surely incorporate some of McCarthy’s concepts next season.
The latest on the Prescott contract front indicated he wanted a shorter-term deal. The Cowboys, as their 2019 extension spree most recently indicated, are proponents of longer contracts. A short-term pact would give the 26-year-old quarterback a chance at another monster payday in his early 30s or possibly before then. Given the events of the Prescott negotiation timeline to this point, his camp holding firm on this preference adds up.
The Cowboys have until July 15 to sign their quarterback to an extension. That would help the team’s cap situation; Prescott’s $31.5MM cap figure is anchoring Dallas’ payroll at the moment.
Get ready to pay up for the 15th best QB in football.
Pay up or start over at QB position
Start over Herbert or Love! Then we can upgrade the defense.
Have you seen the money QBs are getting? It’s not the position to search for bargains.
Eh, probably more like 8-13th best.
8-13 is accurate. Make him the highest paid and “get it over with” literally. Can’t afford Byron Jones this offseason, wait until next offseason.
Just give Dak his money and move on to 2020 season. The alternative is starting over with rookie QB.
That’s the system that works though. Once your qb is off his rookie deal, it makes it that much harder to build and keep players around them.
Just pay him, even $35 mm /yr isn’t gonna look that bad once this cap absolutely explodes.
With 22 million people on the unemployment line and a 30+% drop in the stock market, and of course the world at an economic standstill……don’t think the owners want to see a QB. who’s arguably not in the top 5 of the league set new pay standard regardless of what happens with the cap….
Not opportune time to be using “positive” on headlines.
I’m positive the king flu is almost over
Well, you’re clearly a dunce.
Or Kung flu if you don’t have a crap iPhone
Oh, and a racist dunce to boot. Charming.
Only oversensitive, sad racists think everything else is racist. That’s all you cry about on these posts. Grow a pair and get over it.
Dynamite drop in Monty was Kung flu fighting his quips were fast as lightning . I was born in 1970 so you can’t make me cry. Enjoy life we will get through this and have a sense of humor or don’t won’t take the sunshine away from me .
racist? i guess that’s what dipshit people say about everything. honey I’m going to order Chinese food tonight for supper. oh dear you racist sob don’t ever say that again. absolutely ridiculous
At this point I wouldn’t even give him a new deal.
Draft a QB this year, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts, Jake Fromm, Jacob Eason and then Dak can walk next year.
May sound silly but 35mil is a lot to give up to be mediocre. The Cowboys have one of the best o lines, one of the best RBs, a top WR in Cooper.
That defence looks pretty alright. They have Poe and McCoy upfront, plus Lawrence and Hill. They have LVE at LB, and I also like the Dix signing at safety.
If you had that roster and had any other top 15 QB leading them your a guaranteed playoff team, won’t a 8-8 team outside the playoffs.
Draft a QB, to learn the staff, roster and play book. Let Dak walk next year, freeing up a good amount of money then use that to bring up a starting CB, a back up WR and just some depth.
Even if you had Jameis Winston or Cam Newton, both without jobs, as your starting WB on the Cowboys your going to get 7 wins minimum
That pretty alright defense is empty in the secondary and has no d-line depth. Dak is a top 10 qb that has yet to play for a good coach. Now he has one. That o-line started taking on water last yr and it’s going to be worse this yr. Zeke looked slow and lazy last yr. Cooper no-showed for about 8 games. Witten totally killed the TE position last yr. They still put up the most yards on offense. Dak is not the problem. If this team is as loaded as you imply, the last thing you do is start over with a rookie QB.
Thank God for the top contracts given to both Elliott and Cooper…you know one who looked slow and lazy and the other no show for half the season….lots of dough for non-performance. A big fan of 1 year contracts where year to year performance determines the next years pay!
Witten looked like a shadow of his previous self and wasn’t any where near the difference maker he once was.
Not sure either about the criticism that you lay at their former coach and the platitudes that you bestow on their new one.
Garrett and Linehan sucked, always have and always will. The new staff at least has some pedigree and rings.
IMHO, Zeke looked a step slower last year. That said, he went from crazy good to just really good. But it also could portend a future decline.
Simmons, no just no. You talk about the Dallas defense as if McCoy, Poe, and Dix. were there last year. They weren’t part of the 8-8 season. LVE was mediocre last year due to injury. Jalen Smith was mediocre as well. The D couldn’t stop anyone when it mattered, particularly the run.
Cooper was a shell of himself the second half of the year due to knee and ankle injuries. Prescott had an injured throwing shoulder at seasons end. These days, Witten is as good a tight end as he is a broadcaster. Even so, Dak moved the offense. Why in the world would you start over with a rookie quarterback? Or replace Prescott with a suspect newton, Dalton, Winston, etc.?
Draft a RDE, a CB, a DL, and a slot WR. Fix the defense, the offense is not the problem.
Here we go….. the fuse has been lit Russ.
They pay him that kind of money and there’s no chance they ever win. I like Dak but he’s not an accurate QB and he will never win. They couldn’t put enough players around him when he made 750k what makes anyone think they can win paying him 35 million. It will be another 10 years before they have a chance to win. Sick of this team!
Just think of the money they will have tied up in 3 players….Dak, Elliott, and Cooper…….now imagine a locker room full of much much cheaper talent rounding out the team simply because there isn’t much money left for the balance of the roster…..then listen to the gripes from those 3 when they can’t even sniff the playoffs!
Don’t be mistaken and take that “new cap” to the bank just yet….empty or socially distanced stadium stands, hot dog stands, parking lots, etc……less revenue any way you look at it for the foreseeable future. First and foremost the owners are business folk and don’t own teams because they didn’t know how to make lots more then they spend!
4 players… Lawrence is 20M+ per season as well. Once Dak signs they’ll have 4 players taking up nearly 50% of their cap space. NFL rosters consist of 55 players, do the math, Dallas is heading for a disaster.
Who cares!! We have people all over this country right now unsure when the next paycheck might come in and you’re all talking about non essential millionaire babies. The league revenues are sick and they continue to get richer and richer while everyone else gets poorer and poorer. Truly sad!!
This is a sports website last I checked. I’m pretty sure we are all sports fans. Take your soapbox to CNN.com.
Then why did you sign in, and read the article? Y’all have to learn to multi-task. It’s possible to be concerned about the virus, to self-isolate, to have a spaghetti dinner with your family, and to watch the draft.
And read your history. The Great Depression helped make the movie industry the powerhouse it is today. Even badly off people need some escapism.
Really? smh
