Trent Williams is heading to San Francisco. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the Redskins are trading the lineman to the 49ers. Washington will receive a fifth-rounder in this year’s draft and a third-rounder in next year’s draft. ESPN’s Josina Anderson previously reported (via Twitter) that the Redskins had a “deal in place” for the lineman.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network notes (on Twitter) that a contract extension isn’t in place. Williams has been seeking a new contract that would make him one of the highest-paid lineman in the NFL. Those contract demands ended up influencing the Redskins’ return in a trade; while plenty of teams were reportedly interested in trading for Williams, they were wary of signing him to a long-term deal. Williams has one year and a $12.5MM base salary remaining on his current contract.
Interestingly, a new deal for Williams is not part of the deal with the Niners, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears. Had Williams gone to the Vikings, he would have received a fresh pact to reposition the tackle market. The Vikes deal fell through, however, because Williams did not want to go to Minnesota, Rapoport hears. The Browns also were in the mix – and long believed to be the frontrunners – but the 49ers and Vikings were the last teams left in the sweepstakes (Twitter link).
The Buccaneers and Jets were also connected to Williams in recent weeks, but they opted for younger (and cheaper) offensive line help in the first round of the draft instead. At No. 11, the Jets landed Mekhi Becton, who shoves defensive linemen and trucks with ease. At No. 13, the Buccaneers got Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, who offers four position potential and ridiculous athleticism for his size.
We heard earlier today that the 49ers could emerge as a suitor. For starters, it’s uncertain if Joe Staley will come back next year, as the veteran lineman has flirted with retirement. Furthermore, Williams has a relationship with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was Washington’s offensive coordinator between 2010 and 2013. Considering the seven-time Pro Bowler’s familiarity with the system, he’s a logical fit for San Francisco.
lol
Does Sherm get a free cheap shot? Should be an interesting meeting.
Damn Niners!
Lynch is in more of a hurry to get back to 4-12 than I originally thought. He has no use for Buckner but thinks a guy who deliberately goes about sabotaging his own career is a great investment. I guess he’ll probably want to sign Antonio Brown next…lol.
you do know the team cant pay everyone right there a thing called cap! you keep buckner there little to no chance they can keep kittle and armstead. plus what wrong with getting trent when your own star OT retired. redskins are a mess who wouldnt want out
Jeremy it’s obvious that guy does not know the first thing about the 49ers and their front office or how the nfl works in general
Now that Armstead got paid he’ll go back to sleep until it’s time to con them again.
Damn ur an idiot
Sabotaging his own career? The Redskins joke of a medical staff could have killed him by misdiagnosing a cancerous tumour on his head. Would you want to keep playing for them?
Shouldn’t his own doctor be reviewing non-injury related illnesses?
Good riddance
Yeah how dare Williams not want to play for a team that almost got him killed. What a douche!
The highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL (at the time of signing his last contract) couldn’t afford to get a second opinion. There’s three dolts here: 1. Trent Williams. 2. his agent 3. you.
Ya filthy dolt bag!
Yeaaaaaaa no more TW trade stories.
Bingo!
now we get TW hold out until he is the highest paid player stories.
Yes!! Will be great in this system having played for Shanahan before and will slide right in when Staley retires. I love it! This line was already a great O line but will be even better.
Slide on in
Wow, you win Trent. Now I have to route against them in any super bowls they may make.
The Redskins didn’t do bad, either. They’re building, and the 2 picks should help. Plus by the time they’re really good again, Williams would’ve been older anyway.
Good to see everyone could get something in the end.
They drafted an immediate replacement. Talented but needs to be kept on a leash and have behavior goals put into his contract.
By the time the redskins are good again, TW will be retired and eligible for social security.
No, be grateful that SF/Kyle Shanahan took this headache off the Redskins’ hands.
A year+ of nonsense from the front office for a 3rd & 5th? Losing teams lose.
Williams is the big loser here: he lost a year of $12.5 million salary which he won’t get back, he won’t get a new contract until he plays out this one, no guaranteed money. The Redskins did okay: 3d and a 5th for a now injury prone player with attitude problems.
The biggest win for the Redskins is that no player will be tempted to pull a holdout in DC any time soon, as the results are not pleasant for the player. I have some sympathy for Dunbar playing on $3 million/year when his play merited $8 million+ but zero sympathy for Trent Williams not playing out what was the highest paid offensive line contract in the history of the NFL when signed.
Williams is the big loser only because he did it to himself. Have no sympathy for him
So you’ve never in your life asked for a pay raise after doing a really great job? It’s not that different, the numbers are just bigger because the pool of ppl capable of playing in the NFL is smaller.
Appalachian, Trent Williams already had a pay raise. When he signed his last contract in 2015 for $66 million, Williams became the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history. Play out your contract, get a new one. That’s the way it works.
A tremendous headache for the new regime eliminated….distraction gone…no re-negotiation of contracts with time left on them for Williams or anybody thinking of doing the same on the team….seems like a win for the Redskins organization to me!
Absolutely. Had the Redskins caved on TW’s contract demands it would have been open season in DC forever. Holdouts, salary demands, extensions, renegotiations, sit-ins. Good move Redskins.
PS. That said, it would have been better to trade TW much earlier when he could have brought a first or a second round pick without much argument. Bruce Allen botched this one early.
I guess your missing my point. If you are a well regarded FA, why on earth would you sign w/ the Skins? No different than the NFLPA telling their guys not to sign w/ the Jags due to excessive fines.
If that’s how the Redskins treat upper echelon players what’s the point of playing there? Add in they misspelled London F’s name. They simply don’t care at all. Is what those statements say to other players in the league.
I agree to a certain extent with what you’ve said JJ but the Redskins botched this up from the get go. They should have realized immediately, that nothing they offered was going to matter to Williams because all he really cared about was letting the world know he had a huge chip on his shoulder and was (in his twisted mind) a victim.
Someone please explain to me why Williams is now the bad guy? The Redskins team doctors made a mistake with the guy’s health! The trust was broken, and if he felt underpaid to boot, how is he wrong for no longer wanting to play there?
I don’t really see a “bad guy” in this situation. It’s an unfortunate set of circumstances, and all parties just did the best they could.
Williams is the bad guy. Complaining about the medical staff was fine. Complaining about Bruce Allen as a player is marginal (undermining the GM, but Allen was a terrible GM). Holding out for a contract extension with huge guaranteed money and then pulling a Princess and the Pea stunt with the helmet which didn’t fit is conduct unbefitting a professional athlete.
TW was a great player but for the last few years he’s been a greater imbecile and disruptor than he was a great player. I believe his agent is at least equally responsible for this avaricious clown show but TW is a grown up man and should have thought this out for himself before throwing all his toys out of the pram.
PS. TW with a $66 million contract can afford to get a second medical opinion any time he feels team medical care is inadequate. I’m astonished this man attended university let alone graduated. Did he graduate?
No huge chip, moron. Maybe a misdiagnosed lump on his head but not a chip on his shoulder.
Damn ur an idiot
To all those who insisted that he was worth a 1st if not 2nd round draft choice for sure….and he plays under his current contract with no commitments to an extension if reports are correct….quite a humbling return for the “All Pro”!…if you consider making $12.5 million scraps!
terrible organization
Just ordered my Trent Williams jersey on Ali-Baba
all these trent trade talks and all they get is a 5th and a 2021 3rd? did the redskins just screw them self?
Quick tell me the last time he played more then 13 games in a season. Better have a great backup with this guys as ur starter
I like this. 9ers have an strong defence, they have Samuel and Aiyuk as receivers they have a bunch of RBs they have a good QB and now they are improving their line.
Definitely will be in the playoffs agains and definitely a SB threat
How long until his helmet doesn’t fit right and would only feel better with a new and more lucrative contract?
“We reached out to Richard Sherman for his thoughts, but couldn’t find him.”
