The Redskins have signed four undrafted rookie free agents, according to a team press release:
- Johnathon Johnson, WR (Missouri)
- Steven Montez, QB (Colorado)
- Thaddeus Moss, TE (LSU)
- Isaiah Wright, WR (Temple)
Montez could face long odds of making the Redskins’ roster with Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen already under contract (not to mention Alex Smith), but he’s still a prospect to keep an eye on. At 6’5″, he has the size that pro scouts drool over for quarterbacks. He was also a three-sport standout coming out of high school; his athleticism is a major plus, even though he didn’t do quite enough for the Buffaloes to earn a spot in the seven-round draft. He did, however, break 31 program records during his run. Montez’s deal includes $35K guaranteed (Twitter link via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle), a solid sum for a UDFA.
The biggest name on the list, however, is Moss – the son of Hall of Famer Randy Moss. At LSU, the tight end showed promise in spurts, so the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. If not for a fracture in his right foot, Moss likely would have been drafted somewhere during Day 3.
Good signings could’ve done with a couple more young WRers to look at
I can’t believe they are satisfied with the OL. Have they forgotten they were dead last in time of possession last year?
I think not addressing the WR’s and OL is by design. This way when Haskins has another mediocre year, Ron can say he’s not my QB and draft one next year.
They already had 3 ones on the D line, they didn’t need Chance. Hopefully he’ll be great, but trading back would have been the much better option. When your constantly drafting in the top 5-10 range, you’re not 1 player shy of being average, let alone good.
So you think Ron would draft another QB rather than make a play for his old buddy Newton? I’m not sure I do.
Signing Cam only means a lower draft pick next year. Rather than 3-5 wins, they’d end up 7 or 8.
Cam and Ron went to Carolina the same year, 2011. So he’s fine w/ going w/ a young QB rather than a vet.
Haskins & Allen will flip flop this season. Haskins most likely will open the season, then be benched by Halloween. Allen will sit around Dec. That’s my guess.
I only mentioned this because nobody would fit your “my guy” scenario with regards to Ron better than Newton.
I agree. And they had a great run w/ the Panthers. But I think Ron wants a fresh start in DC. He’s has the fat contract & control, so losing this year isn’t a job security problem.
I live in Jacksonville. I can tell you 1st hand, no matter how good of a D you have; if your O can’t control the clock, they get worn out. Which is why I’m not a fan of the Young Pick. It’s an offensive driven league. High end D picks really don’t have the same value. K Mack is a perfect example. HoF career in the making (my opinion). Bad teams in Oakland and about .500 w/ Da Bears. Was he worth being taken #3 & then traded for 2 ones? Record wise of his team says no.
Ron was in high demand because we all know he can make a team better. The big question is how long can he and Snyder peacefully co-exist?
I agree. I think he’ll get at least 4 years in Washington. Dan hates being the face of the franchise and will gladly pay top dollar for someone else to handle the press. 20 years of below 500 & mostly the GM’s and HC’s took the arrows. Every so often Dan will get bad press, but then he’ll have it covered.
You have two strong willed alpha male type personalities here so I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sparks flying. Kind of a throwback to when George Allen was HC. His players absolutely loved him but George was barely tolerated by the FO people. Had he not been so successful, they would have canned him much sooner than they did.
Moss is a great blocker, good receiver, just lacks separation ability. Not improved by his injuries. Could be deadly in the red zone.
Montez is a great guy. Has all the tools. But, needs to be taught the ABCs of being an NFL QB. Should be ready by the time Haskins’ contract is up… if ever.
Wright has some nice highlights. Hope he makes the team, WR is pretty crowded in DC.
I agree on Moss & Montez. I like both especially as UDFAs. I was wanting them to be picked up by Dallas.
