The phones are ringing in Washington. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the Redskins have started to receive phone calls from teams interested in the second-overall pick. While the organization isn’t actively shopping the selection, they’re listening to offers.
Meanwhile, NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets that there’s a “sense in the league” that the No. 2 pick could be “bought.” ESPN’s John Keim notes (on Twitter) that the “teams that might have interest” understand that they don’t possess the ammo to make a trade.
It’s generally been assumed that the Redskins would stick with the second-overall pick and select Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. This opinion seemed to be all-but-confirmed when we learned that teams outside of the top-three hadn’t even talked to the talented pass-rusher.
However, over the past month, the majority of reports have revolved around Washington’s interest in quarterback prospects, including Tua Tagovailoa as well as Jordan Love. Of course, the Redskins could come away from the weekend with both Young and a quarterback, but it’s worth noting that the organization currently owns only seven draft picks.
Young is generally considered to be the top prospect in the draft, so the Redskins will certainly have their fair share of suitors. However, if they do actively shop the second-overall pick, they’ll find themselves competing with two other NFC foes. We’ve heard rumblings recently that both the Lions (#3) and Giants (#4) could trade their first-rounders.
If someone does trade for this pick it’s to take young not draft a qb. He’s going to be a 10 sack a year guy for 10 years
That might be underselling him to an extent, honestly. I think he’s good for nearly a sack a game average by his second season. If the Jets didn’t have so many holes to fill I’d hope they do it… and even if they did, I wouldn’t be angry.
The Redskins aren’t moving this pick unless they receive something like what they gave for RG3. If Tua has no injury history, I think it could be possible. Skins will hang on and pick Young
Ravens would be willing to give them RG3.
This could make sense, but only if Washington receives a king’s ransom. They already have a stacked defensive line and could stand to acquire more draft picks. However, given how amazing Young is, I would only make the move if someone overpaid
Don’t think there is anything of the such as “overpaying” for a player that a team covets…whether that player actually propels that team to/in the playoffs and beyond is another story…..many posting forget that the Redskins were and currently are a 3-13 team entering the 2020 season….while Young is obviously an asset that should be coveted, will his performance alone give them another 6 wins minimum to even make the playoffs if all else stays intact? Doubt it! That stacked Defensive line certainly didn’t do anything to add wins last year….acquiring more and better talent is something Rivera has got to be looking at as a caveat to obtaining Chase Young and still being a mediocre team. Comparatively, and speaking of coveted draft picks, how many playoffs has Khalill Mack been to and he was the gold standard of the draft not so long ago.
Young is 21 it’s not a pick that needs to pay off next year. The pick is to have an elite player for at least a decade. Getting a defensive player of the year type is never a bad idea
Totally agree….just think that teams like the Redskins, and Giants need such an infusion of talent that potentially trading out of a pick like Young, and getting 2 starters for the longer term is worth contemplating…….
Also, don’t know what Youngs makeup is, but for the most part, if the Redskins are still bottom feeding in the league but the time Young’s rookie contract (and potentially sooner) runs out, he will either be looking at being one if not the highest paid player in the league or be looking to leave and sign with someone that both pays him and has a chance of winning. That would throw serious doubt on the generational elite player being on a losing team for a decade!
He’s from Maryland and impressed everyone at the combine with his leadership and character I don’t see filling 2 holes with avg players being worth having an Aaron Donald type of pass rusher. He can completely turn around the redskins just like Bosa did with the 49ers
Yes, but Washington already has Sweat, Kerrigan, Allen, Ioannidas, and Payne on the d-line. If they could transform Young into 2 firsts and a second, that could lead to improvement at exponentially weaker positions, such as receiver, linebacker, and safety. I just don’t see Young transforming Washington overnight when they already had 46 sacks: a more than respectable figure
True, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some more d-line help.
Yes, but I’m not commenting on getting 2 average players with the picks that the Redskins would pick up…..the 2 picks would have too potentially net them 2 starters who would plug the holes that help them crawl up from their current 3 wins to something closer to the playoffs potentially.
Bosa, while terrific didn’t turn the 49’ers around by himself….every guy on that defense had terrific years and the offense complimented their play very nicely which is why they made the Super Bowl
I think Chase is way overrated. He was irrelevant against Clemson (2 tackles 0 sacks), #8 Wisconsin wasn’t a great game either in the Big 10 championship, they figured out how to stop him after their Oct game. 9 of his sacks came against unranked teams. Now he did well against #8 Penn State. Check out his game stats

He was triple teamed a ton against Clemson… lol. That allowed teammates to do work. And he still provided pressure despite those constant triple teams.
And explain his first game against Wisconsin, one of the best OL in the nation, when he had 4 sacks. As you mentioned, he was a beast against PSU. He also had 2 sacks against a very good, improved Indiana team. 1.5 sacks against Cincinnati who ended up having a pretty successful offense for an 11-3 team. Seems nitpicky. He is really good.
If he was tripled teamed against Clemson (I don’t remember), then why were the able to make a comeback? As for Wisconsin, he went from 4 sacks to 0. They adjusted their game to stop him. They learned how to handle him & gained 432 yards and 23 1st downs in the championship game. My point is in big games, stars rise up & both the big 10 game and playoffs he totaled 5 solo tackles & no sacks. Those are the stats, not my opinion.
Is 6.5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks in 2 games against Wisconsin not good enough?
Wisconsin went from 7 points to 21 in the games. They adjusted to him and the other players.
Playing to avoid young means that nobody else stepped up. They adjusted their game plan to don’t let chase beat us let someone else make a play that’s not on young. If there’s someone out there than beat triple teams I’d like to see him
It wasn’t like Young was an nobody for the 1st meeting. OSU ended rank #3. So its not like they had a terrible D except for Young & the CB.
I go by the stats & in the 2 biggest games of the year, Big 10 title and playoff game, his performances weren’t good. He was ineffective. 8 tackles shouldn’t make you the #2 overall pick.
Miami offer its picks maybe.
Miami definitely has the ammunition to move up. They could conceivably keep their #5 pick as well. I believe they have 3 first rounders next year too.
Could take Young and then a QB at 6
Young was shut down by Michigan. Not sure he’s all that elite. Good to great maybe but not elite.
If Detroit wanted to move up to 2 from 3 to get Young, what would they have to offer Washington?
Prob #3 and #35 plus maybe a day 3 pick
Is there a scenario where Lions and Redskins swap picks?
Daniel Snyder: “OK, I’m willing to swap picks but you have to promise me good seats to Piston and Redwing games as well”
It’s hard to give redskins credit during the offseason, but they have made such a smokescreen of this pick they probably don’t even know who they are drafting. They have people thinking they are getting a qb….laughable. Anyone with something everyone else wants will always listen and wait for the overpay. If it doesn’t come they still get Young. If it does come, they get a ton of capital and probably still make due with filling a lot of needs. Jags give them a certain angry defensive end and some picks?
I know most people are thinking QB. But what about trading up for Chase Young.
Cleveland obviously would want Trent Williams from Washington, but what if they pulled a deal like…
2020 #10, #41 and 2021 1st and a 2021 3rd for #2 overall and Trent Williams. Browns would cut Vernon. They would have 2 premium edge rushers and use some of that Vernon money to extend Williams.
Redskins at 10 would most likely go defense. And if Haskins is not the answer, they have 2 1sts to try and get Lawrence in 2021. They need a corner or linebacker. If they don’t like anyone at 10 they could trade back again and look at Murray, Henderson, McKinney.
They’d also get a 2nd, which they don’t currently have. And they could address WR or Safety.
Just a thought.
Not going to happen. The browns passed over Bradley Chubb few years ago because they didn’t want to have to wind up paying multiple pass rushers huge bucks.
The browns need a tackle but should stay at 10 and take Becton, Thomas or Wills. They added Sheldon Richardson and Adrian Clayborn in the off season so trading that much to take young doesn’t make sense when cleveland has other needs.
They need a LT, a guard, could use a linebacker or two, and could use some depth at safety and corner.
The overlap with Young works out better though. Only a 2 year overlap. Chubb was only a 1 year difference.
Garrett extension would be 2022-2027 (5 yr) with an out likely in the 3rd or 4th year.
Young would be under his rookie deal until 2025. And at that time they would potentially be out of Garrett’s deal or only have 2 years of overlap of high price DEs if they extended Young in 2026.
It would take 2 firsts and a 2nd just to move up from 10 then probably a 3rd at least for Trent Williams. So it would be 2020 1st,2nd,3rd & 2021 1st. Still worth it?
The No. 8 pick in 2016, the No. 77 pick (third round) in 2016, the No. 100 pick (fourth round) in 2016, a 2017 first-rounder and a 2018 second-rounder.
Carson Wentz Trade.
What I had said is 2020 1st, 2nd; 2021 1st and 3rd. Which is what you listed above actually – just the 3rd from this year.
You take chase young.
Either Haskins proves he’s the guy next year or he sucks and the redskins find themselves in position next year to draft Lawrence, Fields, Jamie Newman out of Georgia.
Hell I’d be alright if my 49ers traded both 1st rounders and Dee Ford. Bosa & Young on rookie contracts off the edges for the next 4 years.
