It’s official. On Monday, the Redskins announced that they have exercised their fifth-year option on defensive lineman Jonathan Allen.

NFL teams have until May 3rd to exercise, or decline, the 2021 option for first-round draft picks from the 2017 class. As shown in PFR’s tracker, several players are already ticketed for a fifth year. Some of them were easy calls, including Jets safety Jamal Adams and Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White. Others – like Browns tight end David Njoku – required a little bit of extra thought.
Allen was one of the easier calls. After much of his rookie year, Allen has notched 14 sacks across the last two seasons for the Redskins. The Alabama product will have some additional help this year, thanks to the addition of Chase Young, who had 17 sacks in his final year at Ohio State.
Because Allen was drafted outside of the Top 10 (No. 17 overall), the salary figure on his 2021 season is not yet known. For those inside of the Top 10, those figures will correspond to the transition tag amount at their respective positions. In the case of Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (No. 1 overall), he’ll earn upwards of $16MM.
Fifth-year options for players are guaranteed for injury only, but that will change starting next year thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement.
I hope they decide to lock him up long term prior to the next season. I think with the addition of Chase Young, several of the guys along the d-line are going to have breakout years including Allen.
The Redskins got the HC everyone wanted when they got Ron but don’t expect miracles the first year.
I don’t think it would be a miracle for that defensive line to improve. There’s a ton of talent there, so I don’t really see it as a stretch.
I believe the word used was “breakout”. That suggests a jump from 27th to a top ten ranking to me. Maybe that doesn’t qualify as a miracle but to me it’s more than just a stretch for the Redskins at this time.
@Michael, I agree. With the addition of Young and Del Rio coaching the defense, I don’t think it’s a stretch to have several of the guys on that front line have breakout years like he said. The defensive backs and linebackers are somewhat questionable, but that front line is stacked.
Skins have a whole lot of 1’s on the front 7. Should be able to raise caine, we’ll see!
I wouldn’t expect them to slow down the Cowboys offense much but getting a chance to face the Browns and Bengals should help build some confidence.
The Cowgirls, with Prescott under center, have at best a mediocre offense.
They shall be going nowhere this year.
The Cowboys got rid of Jason Garrett so how could they possibly be worse off now?
Don’t count the bengals or browns out yet, because you never know! I mean jets beat the cowgirls and browns murdered the jets, and bengals got their first win against the jets
The redskins need a lot of help to be a contender the o line will be as bad as the browns were last year, we know Haskins isn’t the quarterback of the future, and quite honestly this team is runned by an idiot in Schneider
And how will that change next year Zach!!?? Thanks for being lazy AGAIN!
