The Patriots went outside the box with their first pick of the 2020 draft, taking safety Kyle Dugger from tiny school Lenoir-Rhyne with the 37th overall pick.
Dugger was expected to go in the second-round so it wasn’t shocking, but he’s still a more under the radar prospect as a result of playing D2 ball. Dugger shined during Senior Bowl week, and began rocketing up draft boards as a result. He received all kinds of accolades during his college career, and was a second-team All-American in 2019 despite being limited to only seven games because of a hand injury.
At 24 he’s older than your typical draft prospect, and definitely comes with a lot of risk. Bill Belichick obviously thought it was a plunge worth taking, and it sounds like he’s got high upside. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller listed Keanu Neal and Mark Barron as pro comps in a recent write-up.
Idk why Bill does this to us every year
Even by Belichick standards this is a bit of a head scratcher with Winfield Jr and Delpit there.
Huh. Head scratcher
He is a stud. Huge underdog. So athletic and great cover abilities. Fantastic pick in my opinion
Your joking right ?
All kinds of accolades during his college career…. will be interesting to see if he is a tweener. Amazing in D II but perhaps would have been average at D I
And here is well the internet will criticize Bill Belichick for not knowing how to run a football team….
He doesn’t have a very good draft record with Wrs or dbs.
His first round history and second round history is full of misses.
He seems to find talent later plus udfa guys and other teams trash.
Nobody says he can’t run a team. He just can’t draft to save his life.
2nd round dbs- Duke Dawson, Jordan Richards, Cyrus Jones, Tavon Wilson, Ras I Dowling, Darius Butler, Eugene Wilson, Terrance Wheatley.
He’s drafted 2 good DBs in 2nd round.
Devin McCourty, Asante Samuel, Patrick Chung, Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Brandon Meriweather, Eugene Wilson, Tebuck Jones, Ellis Hobbs… Dude has been drafting for 29 years. It’s easy to pick a few busts. Also it looks like you picked your list from ESPN.com
2nd round dbs
Cool you listed guys NOT in the 2nd round lmao.
Tebucky Jones was drafted in 1998 by the patriots. Lmao bill became head coach in 2000. He was with the jets in 1998. You know who was coach in 98? Pete Carroll.
Ellis Hobbs was a 3rd round pick, played 2005-2010. Awesome pick where you only got 4 years from the dude.
Eugene Wilson was a 2nd round pick, 36th overall played 2003-2010, 5 with patriots….did not live up to that draft status at all. 1st 3 years were good but fell off considerably.
Asante Samuel was a 4th round pick. Not a 1st or 2nd. Falls under the part of my comment- finds talent later.
Patrick Chung was part of the 2 good DBs he’s drafted in the 2nd.
Duron Harmon was a 3rd round pick. Started 29 games in 7 seasons with the patriots out of 111 games. Produced 19 AV in 7 seasons..great you got a rotational player in the 3rd round.
Best of the bunch was Devin Mccourty….who was a 1st round pick not 2nd round pick.
Band wagon fans are hilarious. Have no clue about the team they root for. Go find your new team now that brady is gone slappy. Slap yourself for not reading before commenting and not looking stuff up first.
If your original post was in English I might’ve understood it. You started out saying “he doesn’t have a very good draft record with wrs or dbs”. The. You pigeon-holed it to just the 1st and 2nd round. Then you just listed 2nd Round busts at DB. You’re all over the map. Tighten up
I listed 2nd round dbs….cause they just drafted a DB in the 2nd round.
“He doesn’t have a very good draft record with Wrs or dbs.
His first round history and second round history is full of misses.”
I did not name every miss he made. I listed enough to prove how bad he has been drafting dbs early.
Sounds like you should work on reading comprehension during stay at home orders man. Wasn’t that hard to read what I posted.
You can make up whatever excuses you want you won’t live down the tebucky Jones mistake.
You contradicted yourself 3 times in one paragraph. Well done. Is that learned or does it come natural?
So he has hit on EVERY draft pick he’s ever made? He’s perfect? How many WRs has the genius drafted that were busts? Give me a break homer
Those are the ones you missed on.
read the post
How many? Rounds 1-4?
6.
Malcom Mitchell 4th, Aaron Dobson 2nd, Taylor Price 3rd, Brandon Tate 3rd, Chad Jackson 2nd, Bethel Johnson 2nd, Josh Boyce 4th.
His only receiver drafted highly was Deion Branch
Are we counting TEs too? Rounds 1-4?
Jabari Holloway 4th, Daniel Graham 1st, Ben Watson 1st, David Thomas 3rd.
Course he hit on Gronkowski and Hernandez
Graham and Watson were hits
Lmao no they weren’t.
224 receptions, 2490 yards 24 TDs from a 1st round TE? Daniel Graham never passed 40 catches or 500 yards in a season.
Whatever else he brought to the table like blocking or whatever was not worth a 1st rounder.
Ben Watson? He had one good season in NE. 06 with 49 rec and 653 yards. Did not pass 450 yards in any other season. He’s been a great back up TE but 1st round pick? Lmao not anywhere close to living up to the draft status.
Anything else you’d like to be wrong about slappy.
I’m not wrong about anything. You can’t just compare draft picks in a vacuum. You have to compare them using all sorts of factors. If you open your research up instead of being a dunce, you’ll see that compared to other TEs taken in those drafts AND the success rate of drafted TEs as a whole, Graham and Watson were both good pick ups
Tavon Wilson 2.0
most pro teams sleep on D2 guys. always worth taking a look at them.
I thought Bill would take Jalen Hurts
It was early, but Dugger looks like a player. And now Uche. Looks like BB is looking at versatility.
Does BB still live with his parents?
