As of right now, Brandon Scherff is set to play next season under the franchise tag. However, the three-time Pro Bowler is confident he’ll sign an extension with the Redskins.
“It’s gone well,” Scherff said of the negotiations (via Kyle Stackpole of Redskins.com). “Just pretty much sat down and talked to my agent — that’s what he’s there for — and I want to sign a long-term deal with them, too. I love it there, and I’ve always said I wanted to be a Redskin for the rest of my career. So, hopefully we can work towards that.”
After becoming the first guard to receive the franchise tag since 2011, Scherff signed his franchise tender relatively quickly. He’s set to make $14.8MM in 2020 under the tag.
Since being selected with the fifth-overall pick in the 2015 draft, Scherff has started all 65 of his regular season appearances. However, he’s been limited to only 19 games over the past two years thanks to a pair of IR trips.
Let’s check out some more notes from around the NFC…
- Running back Dalvin Cook and the Vikings are also in the midst of extension talks, and the 24-year-old has made it clear that he wants to stick in Minnesota. “I definitely love Minnesota,” Cook told Chris Tomasson of TwinCities.com. “I love everything the state has to bring. Being a kid, I was drafted (in 2017) from Miami (his hometown), so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I actually am happy where I’m at, and I would like to be in Minnesota long term.” After compiling 1,135 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns last season, Cook is set to make a base salary of $1.33MM next season.
- Jameis Winston isn’t a bust, says the GM who drafted him. While the Buccaneers were eager to replace the former first-overall pick with a soon-to-be 43-year-old quarterback, Jason Licht is still optimistic about Winston’s future in the NFL. “We have a lot of respect for Jameis,” the executive told ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “Jameis was still part of our plan if things went a different route. We’ve got a lot of respect for him. I thought he did a lot of great things, and anybody in our office or building would say the same thing. He did some spectacular things for us. I would never say that, personally — and I think I speak on behalf of the organization — that he’s a bust. I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him.” Last season, Winston led the league in passing yards (5,109) and interceptions (30).
- The Giants “love” Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs, reports Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. While the front office has been infatuated with him since well before the combine, there are some who believe the Giants still won’t take him with the fourth-overall pick. In fact, some sources told Vacchiano that they believe the Giants will opt for another lineman in Alabama’s Jedrick Wills or Louisville’s Mekhi Becton.
Cook got hurt his first year…his second year…his third year while his backups have filled in just fine. I don’t see why the Vikings should be giving him an extension when rb is an easy position to replace. Heck mattison was more than fine last year don’t need to extend cook and give him a contract they’ll regret two years from now
Good points King…agreed they have done a good job each season. An extension would make sense…but probably not at the dollar amount Cook wants…hopefully they can find middle ground though because he fits their offense so well
Current RB listing prices are at $5MM per year.
If its 5 mil a year that’s a no brainer but my guess is he wants between 8-12 maybe more and he’s not worth that
I wouldn’t have a problem with a deal at the very lower end of that spectrum – Kenyan Drake’s transition tag price of $8.483 million would be OK by me – but the deal would have to include incentives like active game day bonuses and have a much smaller percentage of guaranteed money than Melvin Gordon got on his two-year deal ($13.5 out of $16 million). Cook should NOT be extended at anywhere near Derrick Henry’s franchise tag price of $10.278 million.
Wirfs is an absolute beast. Hopefully it translates to the pro game.
If the Giants are so intent upon drafting a tackle, they should trade down a couple of spots for better pick value. Maybe the Chargers or Jaguars?
For all the praise daniel jones gets minshew bad a better rookie year but yet cause he was a 6th round pick people don’t see him as a franchise qb. The jags haven’t shown anything to suggest they aren’t going to give him a shot so don’t see them trading up
That’s a good point. I actually think the Jags should stay out and select either Derrick Brown or the best available offensive lineman
I’d go o line or wide receiver. The idea of Chark with Jeudy or lamb gives minshew very good weapons just need to give him time to throw
Considering the sheer number of draft picks Jacksonville owns and the abundance of receiving talent in this class, I think the Jaguars should wait on a receiver until the 20th pick or even day 2. The 9th pick should be exercised on a more critical position
The Jags may trade up, but so could the raiders, colts, dolphins along with the chargers.

The Jags have relied on in-state talent too much in their past drafts.
If a team wants to move up to draft a QB,I’m sure the Giants would consider a trade
Giants should be considering trading down.
There’s a few really strong o line players Thomas, Wirfs, Becton, and Willis.
As for Cook, I think 9mil a year 3 years would make sense. It would make him the 4/5th highest paid RB and it would be 1mil more than Melvin Gordon’s recent deal.
Considering his production and his injury history it would be good for both parties
Agree as far as your comment regarding the Giants trading down, especially if O-Line is going to be their #1 priority. They can’t pick a “project” with as many holes as they have. Of course, it depends on who wants to trade with them for this to work but…..
Wirfs, Thomas, and Willis look like strong possibilities, with Becton seemingly dropping down on their board….see the article in the Sports section of NJ.Com today regarding his potential, as he apparently is projected as somewhat of a “project” to some extent.
With this being the 4th draft that the Giants have picked within the first 5-6 picks, and having missed in at least 3 of the last 4 (assume that Baker might come around) whoever they pick has got to have the skill set to be not just be a good player but an immediate starter and a candidate for the all rookie team right off the bat.
No need to sign a big contract extension with a running back. Cook has been hurt every year. Don’t get sucked into paying big dollars on a RB Spielman.
As a Bears fan, I’d love to see the Vikings deny Cook an extension and have him walk. You guys can save a few bucks and go back to having a backfield of Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata.
The issue with the Vikings isn’t running back. It’s QB.
Cook is good. But he’s not worth a large long term contract because he will be injured every year.
We’ve got him for one more year, at least!
Cook, come to the Bucs!
He won’t be leaving. He is signed for one more year.
