The Lions stayed at No. 3 overall last night and came away with their top target in cornerback Jeff Okudah. They tried to trade back and still grab the Ohio State star but, ultimately, there wasn’t much of a market for the pick.
“We had a lot of conversations,” GM Bob Quinn said late Thursday night (via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press). “We never got a firm offer. No team put anything on the table. Had multiple conversations with multiple teams. They were kind of fishing around and we were open for business as you guys know, and nothing was ever put out in front of us to evaluate.”
The Dolphins, at No. 5, were a prime candidate for a swap, but they were intent on acquiring the No. 3 pick without giving up their No. 5 overall choice. Whatever the ‘Fins offered didn’t move the needle for Quinn & Co. – there was no chance of landing Okudah or any of their preferred targets later on in the first round. The Dolphins didn’t up their offer, either, because they were ultimately comfortable with Tua Tagovailoa and confident that he’d still be available with the fifth pick. They were right and, besides, their imagined Godfather offer of the No. 3 + No. 5 wouldn’t have convinced the Bengals to pass on Joe Burrow.
“The few teams that showed a little bit of interest, just ultimately as we got to [Thursday], for whatever reason, decided to stay put,” Quinn said. “And I think looking back, they probably got the guys they probably would have taken at three. So it takes two teams to tango and, listen, we feel good about it…Ultimately, looking back at it, it really didn’t mean much because nothing happened.”
“Ultimately, looking back at it, it really didn’t mean much because nothing happened.”
A pretty apt synopsis of Detroit Lions football since their last playoff win in 1957.
I’m not a lion’s fan, but I’ve never understood the need to jump on here and make comments like this about other teams. What’s the point, other than to try to stir things up.
He’s not exactly wrong though…..
Would stirring up Detroit fans be a bad thing? How much longer should they have to tolerate such bad ownership and management? At one time they could always count on the Redwings for some relief but they can’t even do that now.
The lions made it to the NFC Championship game in 1991, so they had to win at least 1 game.
You mean 1992?
Nope, it was ‘91… they beat the Cowboys at home to get to the NFC title game only to get blown out by the Redskins at RFK, 42-10.
You are correct. I guess I missed that win because Eric Kramer is the last player one would expect to be a playoff hero.
He should have been more aggressive. Look at the stark differences in offers received when Minnesota and Miami traded back at 25 and 26. Minnesota got 31, 117, and 176 while Miami only got 30 and 136. Miami took less than draft pick trade value chart suggests, but at least they got something extra. Why not offer 3 to Miami/LA for 5/6 and a 3rd, if that fails go to a 4th. I find it hard to believe LA wouldn’t budge considering they traded their 2nd and 3rd later that night
Chargers traded their 2nd and 3rd to trade back into the 3rd for a guy that wasn’t going to be there at 37. Would not pass Saints Seahawks Ravens.
Herbert was going to be there at 6. They didn’t need to trade up for him. They felt they needed to trade up for Murray.
This is what I assumed they would do.
They were never going to get a second. Maybe not even a third.
But grab an extra 4th and get the same guy. Or trade down again and get a 5th or 6th from the Chargers, too.
Instead, they asked for too much and lost the game of chicken because everyone knows the Giants draft in a meat and potatoes fashion and were no threat to take a QB.
Good work by Miami and LAC.
I thought Detroit would at least get another pick in rounds 1 or 2 and still get a top quality defensive starter. They have so many needs I feel they HAD to trade back to get another starter for that defense.
Chase Young was the only player worth trading up for. And he was off the board. Jags could have done Yannick and 9 tho?
Bob Quinn is bad at his job and won’t be here at this time next year.
Should have drafted tua and forced the dolphins or chargers hand.
They took the right guy in Okudah. Here’s to hoping they don’t screw up the rest of the draft.
