The Eagles (ahem) selected quarterback Jalen Hurts with the No. 53 overall pick. Few could have predicted that the Eagles would use significant draft capital on the QB position, but they apparently see him as a potential heir to Carson Wentz.
To say it’s a shocking pick would be a pretty big understatement. Wentz has been injury-prone during his time in the pros, and it’s possible the Eagles just wanted a reliable backup the next time Wentz has to miss games. Regardless of their reasoning, this is going to cause some waves in Philly. Hurts had a very unique and decorated college career, leading Alabama to a national championship before transferring and becoming a Heisman finalist at Oklahoma.
Originally not regarded as an elite pro prospect, Hurts became a late riser after putting up gaudy numbers under Lincoln Riley with the Sooners. After Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, he’s now the third straight Oklahoma passer to be drafted early. Wentz tore an ACL and LCL in 2017, then missed significant time with a back issue in 2018.
He started all 16 regular season games last year, but was knocked out of the Eagles’ playoff loss to Seattle early on. Hurts showed well at the combine, and did enough to thrust himself firmly into Day 2. Last week we heard the Packers and Chargers were interested, both teams that ended up drafting signal-callers in the first-round.
Hurts averaged a ridiculous 11.3 yards per attempt last year, tossing 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions. A dynamic threat with his legs as well, he also added 1,298 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. It’s anyone’s guess as to what Howie Roseman had in mind with this pick, but it’ll be very interesting to see how it all plays out. Wentz is under contract through 2024 after signing a four-year, $128MM extension last offseason.
Wentz sucks since injury. 1 more year then they will trade him for picks to a needy qbless team. Not a rams fan either….goff is much worse.
How do you post Jets earlier, how do you make that mistake?
Green
Howie roseman is a f****** idiot
Your an idiot.
You’re. Idiot.
Amen
Good luck with him eagles fans….I think in the taysom hill role he could succeed….if you’re depending on him to be your QB1….good luck.
Eagles definitely straying far from best available player strategy this year.
Howie has been holed up too long by himself and has convinced himself he is the genius that knows better than everyone else. Delusions of grandeur.
Haha quote of the day
once again Howie roseman is a f****** idiot
Tell us how you REALLY feel. 🙂
How many SB rings do you have there bumpy?
So eagles replace a QB who gets hurt with a QB whos going to to get when he runs. Awesome idea.
Yeah don’t protect Wentz or give him more receivers.
Clearly the eagles have no clue what they’re doing. Passing on Jefferson and now taking Hurts.
Jefferson is a slot reciever genius. You don’t take slot receivers in the 1st round. Next…
It’s a copy cat league, but hard to get cute with your #2 pick when you have other pressing needs than a gimmick
He’s not just a gimmick. He’s an inexpensive proven winner who can be a legit backup in a league where backup QBs can be extremely expensive
Good thing it wasn’t the jets
Yeah, the Jets are the gold standard. LOL!
i actually love this. worse case i feel he becomes a trade chip. best case he’s a great backup and can spell Wentz brilliantly.
I was hoping he’d fall to the Raiders.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Wentz ends up being the trade chip. I think the Eagles have won something like 9 of the 12 games they have been without his services.
Their starter gets hurt a lot so they respond by getting Hurts
A lot…in 4 seasons he’s played 16 games twice, 13 games and 11 games, injuries were shredded knee and broken back.
It is a lot. He missed the playoffs in 2017 and 2018 and threw four passes in the 2019 playoffs before getting injured and missing the rest of the game
And that was a cheap shot from a thug
Can’t figure this one out. So they want a solid back up when Wentz get hurt because we all know he will get hurt or is this planning for the future and they want to to move on from all that money from a injury prone qb after this season
The Eagles are 30mill over the cap for next year and solid backups are quite expensive
Lol. Did they take him so the Cowboys wouldn’t take him later?
Probably that’s why Dallas took Lamb in the first round. LoL
I think howie roseman &matt klentak are the same person.don’t like the first pick sounds like this guy could end up being a clubhouse cancer.
that’s an awefully nice assumption with little base
How the hell do you get Hurts as a clubhouse cancer? Of all the hot takes on this pick this may be the most stupid
think he means Reagor
Read some of Howard Eskins posts before picks just shows how FOS this guy is
Howie is a fu#%in idiot.
Show me your SB ring MiddleIn…oh, you don’t have one? Howie does.
see i get the argument that Howie doesnt draft well, because he really doesnt, but its not like he lucked into a Supe Bowl as some will make it out to be. Howie’s maneuvering with the cap and FAs is the equalizer, and i feel optimistic his draft luck will improve (because even most of the bad picks he made busted more than any could have expected)
Howie’s acquiring of Ashton Jeffrey in FA was quite the equalizer…lol. He’s going to improve with drafts because he was worse than expected seems like bizarre logic as well.
one wonders too if they use his versatility to break him in as a RB while maybe giving him some reps in blowouts. very possible this is simply a long-game play by Howie to turn a 2020 2nd into a 2021 or 2022 1st.
I wondered about that too,but he’s refused to workout anywhere other than qb.
I praised Green Bay for getting their (possible) QB of the future in the face of the “win now” arguments.
Said the Steelers should consider the same (just not with Hurts).
But, I don’t get what Philly is doing. If they hadn’t signed Wentz already, I could see it, but…
Hurts is a very similar style QB as Wentz – mobile, improvisational – so having Hurts as Wentz’s backup means the Eagles can run a consistent playbook even if Wentz goes down. Given how fragile Wentz is, having a first-rate backup who plays in a similar style is brilliant planning.
And I’m a Redskins supporter with a natural distaste for the Eagles, though I enjoy watching Wentz play and admire the super-heroic performance of the whole team last year winning the division in the face of crushing injuries.
correction, Hurts is what Wentz used to be. Wentz cant move like he used to.
While I don’t like Philly using a 2nd here on a QB given the situation, to compare to Green Bay is ridiculous. They took a guy that should’ve gone in the 3rd at best and were probably better off falling back and grabbing Hurts to let him mature into eventually taking over for Rodgers.
They’ve reached with all 3 picks so far,but obviously were looking to add speed.Really don’t like what they’ve done with the linebackers.Super Bowl year they had Bradham,Hicks, and Kendricks. They’ve basically overhauled the group with a bunch of big safeties, and Edwards.Really don’t like how they undervalue the position.
Great pick. Wentz is injury prone so Hurts will get into games for sure!
