The Dolphins’ recent track record on early-round running backs leaves much to be desired. Since 2000, the Dolphins have selected just two running backs in the first two rounds. Neither one panned out – they picked Ronnie Brown in 2005 when Aaron Rodgers was still available and went with Daniel Thomas over DeMarco Murray in 2011. This year, the Dolphins may look to buck the trend.

The Dolphins are likely to select a running back in the first two days of the draft, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes. That may include their No. 26 pick towards the back of the first round or the No. 56 pick in the second.
One team official has been telling people that Georgia’s D’Andre Swift is high on their list. And, per a source who spoke with Jackson, he was set to visit in Miami before the league put the kibosh on travel. Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins left his visit (pre-kibosh) feeling like the Dolphins were infatuated with him. There’s also Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor, who went to dinner with RB coach Eric Studesville. Plus, they’ve been in contact with FSU’s Cam Akers. Dobbins and Swift could be in the mix at No. 26, Jackson hears, while Taylor, Akers, and LSU’s Clyde Edwards-Helaire seem to be candidates at No. 56.
If the Dolphins want Swift or Dobbins, they’ll probably have to pounce on them in the first round. Swift has been on the NFL radar since his freshman season, when he averaged 7.6 yards per carry. The noise around him is still substantial after he ran for 1,218 yards and seven touchdowns. Dobbins, meanwhile, is coming off of a 2,000-yard campaign, his third straight season past the century mark.
I know this wasn’t the intention of the article, but I walked away with, “the Dolphins have done a lousy job drafting RBs in the early rounds… so they’re going to try it again.”
Pretty sure its just that they dont take running backs early. they’ve only taken a running back in the first 3 rounds twice in the last decade, and one of those was Kenyon Drake
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Their picks have been terrible
Better not take one in the first round if they want to actually build something and get better
They better hold off until round two especially if they’re actually considering trading up just to draft Herbert or tua
Well since they didn’t tank well enough they might have to package two firsts or get lucky Tua falls to them and gets to learn/heal under Fitz for a year. If that happens then they can use #18 on whatever tackle is left (maybe Jones or Jackson) to try to replace their Laremy Tunsil hole, and use #26 on Swift to replace their Kenyan Drake hole. The 2018 Dolphins are back! #TrustTheProcess
Dobbins or swift would be great
I like both RBs! Phins select 1 of the two and they select another RB Z Moss or DJ DALLAS.
Swift and Herbert would be a great place to start
Great place to rebuild again in 3 years
Even when the Dolphins have had decent RBs like Ajayi and Drake they got rid of them so why draft another RB who will only end up helping another team?
ajayi was good but his knees were a concern before the draft and after they was a front line starter for em I get y they traded him and the Drake trade I get as they wanted to resign him but he didn’t want to so they traded him .
No RBs in the first round. Value for that is just too low.
I don’t get how people still think a round 1 rb is still a good investment
Unless you have a Superstar qb like Mahomes, you need a good running game to help a young qb. Sure you could find a runningback in the later rounds but obviously some teams are better at finding those hidden gems than others.
Name a team that has won a sb recently. Then think of their rb. Not a single high draft pick. Think of even just the teams who made the sb or the better teams in the league good teams don’t waste high picks on rbs
Sony Michel was a 1st round pick
Marshawn Lynch was a 1st round pick
Ray Rice was a 2nd round pick
Sarquon Barkley is talented enough and high character enough to be the exception to the rule. Many RB are low character guys (natural talent position) and don’t age well. John Riggins, Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore are the exception. From memory, Sweetness and Tony Dorsett (avoided contact) and Emitt Smith played at a high level for a very long time as well.
Why would saquon be the exception to the rule the giants have picked top 6 both years after he got selected. Hasn’t improved the team and wasn’t a good enough pick that o line is still a major need hence he can’t do it all himself
Sarquon was good enough to justify the pick. But no the Giants haven’t done enough around him. With a top QB pick and a top RB pick, it behooves the Giant to solve their offensive line problems ASAP, even at the expense of the defense.
What’s the point in having top young QB talent and one of the top running backs in the league, if you can’t protect the first and/or open lanes for the second?
PS. I think we basically agree, King Beas. It’s just the Giants have made such a mash of their rebuild under Gettleman that nothing improves the team.
Ronnie wasn’t that bad. Obviously he was no Zeke, but he wasn’t a complete bust
Yea I was thinking the same, wouldn’t call him a bust at all. He was pretty good when he played.
Herbert with their 1st pick at #5
Austin Jackson at #18
Isiah Wilson at #26
Receiver at #39 , Justin Jefferson or Tee Higgins if they are available
Cam Akers or Jonathan Taylor at #56
Address the DL interior in the 3rd and 4th.
3rd – Leki Fotu
4th – Josiah Coatney
You get your QB, beef up the oline to protect him, give your new Qb a receiver, and a rb plus beef up your DL
Should also pick up a TE like Matthew Wilkerson and Dalton Keene with a 5th as a project.
Tua with their 1st pick at #5
Austin Jackson at #18
D. Swift at #26
Safety at #39
OL at #56
I like your DL picks. As for WR I like the WR from SMU J. Proche
