The wait is over for Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm. He’ll join the Bills, who have selected him with the No. 167 overall pick, a fifth round choice.
Fromm was once viewed as a potential No. 1 overall pick, but he took himself out of the running with an iffy 2019. Last year, Fromm completed just 60.8% of his throws, the lowest rate of his collegiate career. Still, the Bills see potential in Fromm, who led the Bulldogs to the National Championship Game as a true frosh in 2017.
Over time, Fromm lost his footing to Joe Burrow (LSU), Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), Justin Herbert (Oregon), Jordan Love (Utah State), Jacob Eason (Washington), and other signal callers. In the not too distant past, Fromm was viewed as a potential NFL starter. Now, the feeling is that he’s a quality QB2 in the making.
Fromm will work to improve his arm strength in Buffalo as he slots behind former first-round pick Josh Allen in Buffalo. The Georgia native might not be a world-beater, but his football smarts should allow him to find a home in WNY.
He’s a smart kid. Lots of backup potential and ability to help Allen be a better QB.
I’m a firm supporter of Fromm’s. Man, this is a rough fit though. He’s going to be playing behind another young QB, in some bad weather, with his one weakness maybe being his arm. It’s better than not playing at all though. Hope he does well.
yeah not exactly an ideal place to go because Allen is starting to look pretty legit (minus the end of that playoff game)..but it’s going to be a pretty good team for awhile and could’ve landed in worse spots. I was hoping he’d land with the Colts, Bucs, or even the Patriots.
I still think he’d be a decent starter in the right organization. He gets compared to a lot of noodle-armed journeymen like Aaron Murray, but I really like Fromm’s intelligence and most of his skills beside his arm strength. Other guys that he’s compared to don’t have that same kind of intelligence, so I think he has a better chance of succeeding. He still should have stayed at Georgia for his senior year, but he’s worth it here.
He’ll never be a Pro Bowler, but I think he could have a long career.
Thought he was a perfect fit as a third guy in New Orleans. You know how Sean Payton likes the smart guys. But you’re right, the lack of arm strength in Buffalo is going to be rough to overcome.
It’s hard to understand what the Bills were thinking on this one. If they still think Allen is their guy they should be trying to build up his confidence and this certainly isn’t the best way to do that. If they are starting to second guess themselves on Allen then drafting a QB this late doesn’t look like a great strategy either.
Cause Fromm is a “room” guy. His ability to read and breakdown film will be helpful to Allen.
plus having good depth at every position is a plus….look at Eagles with Foles, Pats with Matt Cassle, Panthers with Matt Moore, etc..can still win some games if the Starter goes down with a competent back up
Very true braves. And Allen takes risks with his body…
If taking a QB in the 5th round cause Allen to lack confidence then he is not the man for the job.
Great thought!
Coach 1: “I have a great idea. We can get Josh to trust us more by drafting another QB in the 5 round”
Coach 2: “Wow, that’s a great thought. Why don’t we add QBs in round 6 and 7 too so his trust in us really soars”.
Anyone who follows the Bills and listens to their coaches and GMs know that is a ridiculous point of view. Look at it this way, Fromm to Allen will be what Reich to Kelly was.
