The Dolphins have called the Bengals on multiple occasions to inquire on the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The Bengals told the Dolphins “in no uncertain terms” that they would not give up the top choice.
No surprises on either end here. The Bengals have been laser-focused on tapping Joe Burrow as their quarterback of the future and the Dolphins probably see him as the best passer in this year’s class as well. The Dolphins’ love affair with the LSU star has been a poorly-kept secret throughout the year and they’ve been pondering a move up to No. 1 since January.
The Bengals, meanwhile, have been hitting the b-button on teams asking about the pick. Unless they’re playing really, really, really hard to get, Burrow to the Bengals is a done deal.
Unable to climb to No. 1, the Dolphins may move up to No. 3 via trade with the Lions. Initially, they tried to make the move without sacrificing their No. 5 pick, but that doesn’t seem to be on the table.
After a strong 2018 season, Burrow shattered all expectations with a 76.3% completion rate, 5,671 passing yards, and 60 (!) touchdowns through the air. He also added another five rushing TDs for good measure.
If the Bengals rejected 3 first round picks, and Burrows flops…
It still wouldn’t be as bad as when they rejected the Saints’ offer to get Ricky Williams. Who were the Bengals so focused on? Akili Smith. Ouch.
THAT was stupid
He won’t flop
Yeah cause 1st overall QBs are a lock.
Jamarcus Russell, also from LSU
Tim Couch
David Carr
Jameis Winston
No guarantee Burrow is going to be successful given the horrid team around him.
You’re right, there is no guarantee; however, I’ll take Burrow over brittle Tua or inconsistent Herbert. If they think he’s the guy, they have to take him. BTW, you forgot Palmer, Luck, Manning (aren’t the Colts glad they didn’t trade down and take Leaf?), Elway etc.
Luck had his career ruined by injuries, will never live up to being #1 overall cause of it and same with Carson Palmer and his ACL. Palmer never lived up to the number one pick. Considering Andre Johnson went 2 picks later I’m sure the Bengals and Lions would like a redo.
The bengals can draft burrow but unless you protect him doesn’t matter what weapons you give him. One thing a young QB needs is protection.
So I mean if you want an Andrew luck career path for burrow or Carson Palmer that’s pretty low ball for the kid.
@phiillyballer. A more important consideration is how in the heck are you ever going to attract head coaches in the future if you refuse to provide the kind of top college prospect they need? If Taylor is their guy the Bengals FO need to show him support here and get Burrows.
You know the Dolphins were playing pretty good ball in the second half of the season, even after September. Why give up the future on the unknown? The Bengals are the Bungles!
Speaking of Bungling, the Redskins better pick Chase Young and not a QB!
The Bengals played well the last four games. Huge comeback vs. Miami that fell short in OT. That was proof that they weren’t quitting on Zac or themselves. They get AJ back. Jonah Williams at LT. The future isn’t as bleak as some might think.
They’re the Bengals
Hahaha still though they Bungle =)
I kinda liked them but they always fell short at the worst time
And they never could beat the Steelers
Burrow will change that. Steelers are headed for a downturn.
Bengals with Joe Burrow won’t be winning anything for at least 4+ years…why not trade to upgrade in more areas, and next year aim for Trevor Lawrence next year?
That’s incredibly short-sighted and just incorrect. Burrow>Lawrence and if you have a player you’re convinced is a clear franchise guy then you don’t pass up on it. A great QB masks a mediocre line, and how many average receivers has Brady has yet still won titles? Burrow is walking into a situation with talent at WR in Green (for at least one season), Boyd, and Ross who, while being a bust, is still useful if he’s on the field. And Burrow has Joe Mixon and Gio Bernard in the backfield. Their offense will be pretty good prey fast.
“A” for effort Miami. Although I believe the pick would have been Chase Young not Joe Burrow.
Miami has no qb…I get young is good but this was to get burrow
I honestly think if the Dolphins offered Dallas their #5, 2021 first rd, and their 2nd rounders for Dak they would take it.
Dallas would take that no doubt but Why give up all those picks to have the pay a solid qb elite money
The job of GM gets harder when you start paying top $ for your QB. AS soon as the contract gets like Rodgers’, for example, you loose the ability to pay another key player or two. Dak’s 3rd or 4th round salary will become 30+ million…say goodbye to your left tackle, etc.
Well yeah I honestly think they would take that too haha good lord anyone who wouldn’t take that as opposed to overpaying an average QB would be insane.
If that’s the case, why aren’t they calling Washington?
If the Dolphins are offering that much for Burrow, Bengals are probably feeling confident he’s worthy of 1 overall.
I do not see where it says what Miami offered. I would appreciate if someone would say on here?
Not a bengals fan or someone that watches them, are they a QB away from the promise land? I would think 3 first round draft picks and probally another future one could change the franchise.
They are a QB away from an attitude shift. Burrow brings that, The organization spent serious $ in FA (which they never do), so I am cautiously optimistic that a little new energy at the QB position will pay off sooner rather than later.
Wasn’t AJ injured for the season as well? As with dmarcus, I am not a Cincy fan, but looking at what they played, literally half their season was a 1 score loss. I have little doubt that had Green been healthy, they would have won quite a few of those.
Not saying Dalton is good or bad (mainly as I rarely see him in action) but if they can get a QB better, then theoretically they should have a decent chance of competing, especially with the extended playoff field I believe starts this season
I’m might be the only one, but I am not sure that Burrows is bullet-proof. It’s almost impossible to have a better 2019 than he did, particularly the crazy last couple of games.
But he’s only had one great season, and his arm strength and release are nothing to write home about. Still the clear #1, but if Miami overwhelmed Cincy, they should think about it.
13-0 vs. tough SEC competition. Went south as a Buckeye and earned the respect of team and cajun culture. Arm’s not a cannon, nor is it a pop gun. Accuracy and timing are spot on. And his name is Burrow, no “s” on the end.
They rejected it cause the Dolphins are a joke right Simmons?
Whoever gets Tua hes injury prone/over rated!
I can see why they wouldn’t want to trade the pick away. Why make a myriad of bad decisions when you can make only 1?
Yeah, and you could try hari kari!
Now here you are being reasonable and not mean spirited. Bengals have always been a head case team. A leader who can bring a winning attitude could work wonders. And you’re right, they played better than the record would indicate. Game 1 took Seattle to the brink IN Seattle.Hold off on the Hari Kari and see how it works out.
