Just in case it couldn’t get any more official, the Bengals are going to be taking LSU quarterback Joe Burrow first overall. Moments after we heard for the final time that they wouldn’t be trading the pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweeted that Cincinnati owner Mike Brown has sent jerseys to the Burrow family.
They’re #9 Bengals jerseys, and Schefter adds that will officially be the number he wears in the NFL. Burrow donned the same number in college. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner will be tasked with turning around the 2-14 Bengals, and commissioner Roger Goodell will be announcing his name just over an hour from now.
The Dolphins apparently tried hard to get the Bengals to trade the pick, but their attempts at a Godfather offer ultimately proved futile. The draft is of course happening remotely and Burrow unfortunately won’t be able to celebrate in person, but at least the family will be able to rock some Bengals/Burrow gear in their living room.
Tomorrow’s top headline: “Burrow family stricken with blindness after receiving Bengal jersey”
The headline from two years from now will read ‘Burrow Demands Trade’
Young QBs generally benefit more from stability (even on a weak team) that bouncing around from one system to another. Also GMs aren’t all that attracted to players who cut and run whenever the going gets tough.
Gotta feel a little bad for these kids who are expected to turn a crappy team around right out of college. Regardless of what the team does with other personal decisions, if Burrow doesn’t get them to .500 by the time his rookie deal is up he will probably be viewed as a bust.
Not going to feel bad for a kid going to make $37 million over 4 years. And that’s how the draft goes in all sports, worst teams get the best players
I wonder if Brown charged them for the jerseys.
Joe Burrow is my wife’s distant cousin. Her grandmother and Joe’s grandfather were brother and sister. I will root for him just because of that fact but its gonna be hard watching the Bengals. Its going to take more than just Joe to turn that franchise around. I’ve never met him but he comes from a great family. I married in the Burrow side from Missouri. I’m a Chiefs fan but now a Joe Burrow fan also. Go get them Joe!!!
