Jadeveon Clowney has been disappointed by his offers thus far in free agency, NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo (Twitter link) hears. The Seahawks have made an effort to keep him and the feeling is that their offer could be the best he gets, Garafolo adds.
It’s a surprising development, considering that many of this year’s top pass rushers have already been spoken for. Matt Judon, Yannick Ngakoue, Chris Jones, Leonard Williams, and Bud Dupree were all yanked back via the franchise tag and DeForest Buckner was shipped from the 49ers to the Colts, which should have left Clowney as the belle of the ball. Instead, his market has stagnated.
Earlier this month, the Giants and Colts were both said to have interest in Clowney, but they’ve since addressed their needs. Our best guess is that Clowney’s injury history is scaring clubs off and his asking price probably hasn’t been adjusted to factor for that. And, in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, teams might not be able to give the former No. 1 overall pick a thorough physical.
Clowney posted just three sacks in 2019, but he was still effective against opposing passers and running backs. For his work, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 20th best edge defender in the NFL, ahead of notables such as Olivier Vernon, Vinny Curry, Von Miller, and Dupree.
Not surprising at all. His stats don’t back up top of the market kind of deal. He’s not Aaron Donald or Kahlil Mack, in fact, he’s no where close to those guys. Throw in effort and injury concerns you are going to have a soft market.
Most of his injury history is his first two years.
Sorry meant to put it on my comment not this one. For some reason it put it on this.
One of his surgeries was micro fracture surgery on his knee. Clowney is a big man and that is a relatively serious injury which gets worse the larger you are. It may have healed up properly, but it’s not a guarantee it won’t be an issue in the future.
Tough to have sexy stats when you’re double teamed every snap. He
He has questions about his work ethic, a bad injury history, and had just 3 sacks last season. I understand there is more to playing OLB than sacks due to line coverage but still if he wants a lot of money he needs to post results.
Obviously sacks aren’t the end all be all of being a defensive end but they sure can help you get paid when it comes to FA
Not surprised. He wants to much damn money
Dude ain’t worth 20 million. any team offering that would be regretting it for years to come
If teams can’t give Clowney a thorough physical because of the virus, then they can’t give any other players thorough physicals either, so why suggest that has anything to do with him not drawing interest?
Because Clowney has a very active injury history and wants to be paid $20 million/year with at least three years guaranteed. Is that so hard to figure out on your own?
Your saying other players seeking deals haven’t suffered injures?
I can’t speak for Kinnear but I think the fact that Clowney has a hip injury and just had surgery for a core muscle injury about 6 weeks ago that will have a major impact on his value. IMO it’s not Clowney’s stats from last year that is the main factor for not being already signed to a lucrative contract rather it’s that his asking price and his demand to sign only with a contender has put himself out of a good many teams free agency plans creating a market where the few interested teams now have more leverage in their contract negotiations.
And he’s a quitter. Watch his film. The numbers don’t outweigh his negative# and he’s finally realizing the league agrees.
Depending on the price, I would love to see the Lions take a run at him. We need another edge rusher.
Titans probably a suitor after dumping Casey to the Broncos for just a 7th
I wonder what Bud Duprees value is. He had only one good season with the Steelers.
Good, he’s a dirt bag
You saying he’s not liked in Philadelphia? Haha there’s a shock
You’re right, you must’ve seen the cheap shot that hurt Wentz…
Would like to see him in Baltimore at any price less than franchise cost of Judon, and ship Judon out for a high pick.
as a texans fan JD has always been somewhat of a frustration , i hope he gets it together and plays up to his potential but i dont really see that happening.
