Now a free agent after being released by the Rams earlier today, Todd Gurley is free to choose his next destination. At this early stage, the veteran running reportedly has the Falcons and Dolphins on his list of potential landing spots, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Additionally, Atlanta and Miami were the two teams that expressed the most trade interest in Gurley before he was cut by Los Angeles, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.
Atlanta looks like a clear contender to add a running back at some point this offseason, as the club’s backfield depth chart is currently headlined by Ito Smith and Brian Hill following the release of Devonta Freeman. Freeman, the Falcons’ starter for the past five years, saw 71 targets in 2019 (10th among running backs), so Gurley’s pass-catching prowess would likely be put to use in Atlanta. Plus, it probably doesn’t hurt that Gurley spent his collegiate time at the University of Georgia.
Miami, meanwhile, already inked ex-Eagles running back Jordan Howard to a two-year, $10MM pact earlier this week, adding him to an RB room that also includes Kalen Ballage, Patrick Laird, and Myles Gaskin. Gurley would further crowd the Dolphins’ depth chart, but head coach Brian Flores — taking a cue from his history with the Patriots — probably wouldn’t be afraid of a running back-by-committee approach.
Every NFL free agent will be affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions, but perhaps none more so than Gurley, whose chronic knee issues surely have interested teams concerned. Indeed, it remains to be seen if a club will take a chance on Gurley’s health without the benefit on an in-person physical.
Really hoping he comes to the falcons! Come back to Georgia!
Go Dawgs.
Would love to see the Dolphins sign him and draft Tua. I have a feeling the Rams are going to sign Gordon to replace Gurley. Or maybe the Bucs get Gordon. He won’t cost as much as he was hoping for I don’t think.
What about the Steelers. Gives a chance for Conner to take a load off and not get hurt as much and gives him a chance to show what he still has left. Plus Ben love to dump it down, which is a good skill he has.
Steelers need running backs with TWO good wheels.
Obviously the Rams wouldnt have cut Gurley if his knee was ok.
It’s a non story. Makes literally no sense for Steelers.
Steelers might be spot for Freeman but can probably wait until after the draft to sign him
Roseman here’s our #2
If he’ll sign on a incentive-laden $5 MM contract, that is.
Gurley will limp back to Georgia. That knee is bad.
I really like Gurley for obvious reasons, but the Falcons shouldn’t pay him much. Just too big of a risk and they are still reeling from giving a second contract to a RB whose injuries derailed his ability (whether it was mentally or physically).
If they can get Gurley on the cheap, then certainly. If not, I would rather the Falcons lean on their current backs for pass protection downs and draft an RB1. Perhaps using their remaining second to go after one.
Then again, I am strongly in the camp of never giving a lead RB a second contract. Keep bringing in fresh guys. They come up to speed more quickly than many positions and burn out more quickly.
They have no talent at running back right now and have freed up some money… I’d go get him. Draft a better backup that can fill his shoes in a couple years. He’s a team changing type back
How bout dem Lions?
He wasn’t a patriot
Texans just can’t catch a break.
Why David Johnson should be really good.
Gurley got a flat tire
Only thing good about Miami is the weather . Hey if you’d Be up for 4 wins and missing playoffs why not. Make less win a Super Bowl!
Cmon..they won 5 last year…and spent their cap space on much better players that were on the roster. I do t necessarily think the Dolphins should go after him, but you can’t say ‘4 win team’ without any justification.
Gurley to Seahawks would be huge or Tby with that Wr core an Brady would be dynamite!
Bucs, if he can get a 2 yr deal. Idk if anyone is going to go 2 or 3 yrs. Not with Gordon, Freeman, Lewis, Miller, & Hyde out there and the draft still coming.
Just signed a 1yr w/ Atlanta
