The Seahawks have agreed to acquire cornerback Quinton Dunbar from the Redskins, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Seattle will ship a fifth-round pick to Washington in exchange for Dunbar, tweets Tom Pelissero of NFL.com.
Unhappy with the extension he signed with the Redskins in 2018, Dunbar has been attempting to orchestrate a trade or release since February. Further reports indicated that Dunbar had been open to working out a “reasonable” restructure of his contract with the Redskins, but the club reportedly had no interest in doing so.
Dunbar, 27, arguably has every reason to be displeased with the three-year, $10.5MM deal he inked two years ago, as he’s largely outplayed the pact. The former undrafted free agent played the most snaps of his NFL tenure in 2019 and posted a career-high four interceptions. Pro Football Focus, meanwhile, graded Dunbar as the league’s second-best cornerback behind only Richard Sherman.
Now heading into the final year of his contract, Dunbar will surely ask the Seahawks for an extension at something closer to market value. On the field, he’ll compete with Tre Flowers — who took a large step back in his second NFL campaign — to play opposite Shaquill Griffin.
Washington, meanwhile, is losing yet another member of its defensive backfield after parting ways with Josh Norman earlier this offseason. The Redskins brought back Kendall Fuller on a four-year deal last week, but the club’s secondary depth behind him is largely barren.
Anxious to see what the Redskins got in return.
Article says a 5th round pick
It says a 5th round draft pick just not sure if it’s this year or next year.
This yr
vacommish,
Just gotta open your eyes and read!
A 5? That seems like a giveaway by the Skins..
Got to agree a 5 th seems a give away for his grade out …
I would have loved to see the Jets get him. A fifth round pick is not much for him
“Dunbar, 27, arguably has every reason to be displeased with the three-year, $10.5MM deal he inked two years ago”. Well why did you sign then? Hold the players accountable for once.
Because if he had severely underplayed his contract his team would have no issue cutting him and not honoring the contract. NFL careers are short. He has every right to get whatever he can.
He wasn’t worth more than a 5th.
Because he wasn’t worth more than that when he signed his contract? Since he has played above the contract. Thus wanting more money. He has done better than expected on the job. The worker wants more money to continue performing at a high level, not at the level he was hired in at. That’s pretty understandable in my eyes.
Yeah I want more as well. But he was traded for B/U pay a 5th
What did you just say? Haha that didn’t make sense.
Wow. Where was Vegas on this one??
Hawks win this deal easily.
Yep skins got took to the wood shed…. again, so what’s new. Fans are very very tied of bad deals with this owner for 20 years now…. bent over again
I don’t line this one either but with his injury history and contract demand I can see why the Skins traded him.
The Redskins are clearing out a bad locker room. All the DB’s have been sent packing, as play was mediocre and Rivera didn’t want to put up with their drugs, violence and bad public behaviour. Good move to put the ringleader on the curb. Seattle will cure Dunbar of his financial demands very quickly (“play or pay your penalties”, “behave or pay your penalties”). Perhaps Seattle will trick the inarticulate dolt and his agent with additional performance bonuses, knowing full well he’s going to ride the pine most of the year and miss those bonuses. Dunbar wanted out of Washington – he’s got his wish.
At first glance I thought the Seahawks came out ahead on this transaction- they’re receiving 1 season of a highly rated CB in exchange for a 5th rd draft pick. Take a closer look at his hamstring issues you see there’s a certain amount of risk in acquiring Dunbar. I’m hearing his injury could be degenerative. Similar to last years Quandre Diggs trade Dunbar will need to play at least double digit games imo for it to be worth a 5th rd pick. Dunbar’s $3.4M cap hit seems reasonable but the Hawks are trying to make room for Clowney and possibly one more DE. If you factor in all those elements the trade seems a little more equal on both sides
Or, a top CB is worth way more than a 5th, even if you only get him for a year. Also there are 30 other teams they could have traded with or they could have kept him. Regardless the return is poop.
It’s a 5th round pick crazy, there’s literally no risk here at all.
How valuable do you think 5th round picks are?! Once every 10 years someone really good comes from the 5th round? Like how do you see this as much risk at all with the Hawks plethora of draft picks.
5th rounders are still very valuable. Seahawks have draft many starters in the 5th round or later. Not every 10 years, usually every year. But I’d still trade a 5th for a proven CB on a reasonable contract.
You’re claiming the Seahawks draft a starter in the 5th round or later usually every year? Got any basis for that?
Are you kidding? The Hawks find value picks every draft! Hawks drafted 2 franchise icons- Kam Chancellor and R Sherman in the 5th round. DL Quinton Jefferson, CB Tre Flowers, and last years all-pro punter Michael “big balls” Dickson. All 3 of those 5th rd picks were starters. CB’s Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell were 6th rd picks. Pfft! Our badass RB Chris Carson was a 7th rd pick as was the MVP of our Super Bowl winning team- LB Malcom Smith. Another SB starter G JR Sweezy also came from the 7th. Thats 10 players over the last decade who not only were starters 3-4 of them went on to become Seahawks legends. So, a team can absolutely get value from a 5th rd pick
Yeah, you’re right, Hawks do seem to have more trouble selecting 1st rounders than 5th.
You’re spot on- IMO in the last decade the only 1st rd pick they had success with was Earl Thomas. You could argue Russell Okong and Bruce Irvin belong in there but you can also argue they never reached their potential. They haven’t had a stud in the 1st rd in over 5 yrs. 2018 pick R Penny was looking good before his ACL injury but his 2018-19 season was overall disappointing. No wonder they trade away their pick
Ugh. They basically traded their best corner for a backup QB when you combine this with the Kyle Allen deal. WTF are they doing?
Kyle Allen means the Redskins are competitive with zero additional salary ($600K) even if Haskins is out for a month with either physical injuries or with ongoing issues adjusting to the NFL. It’s a great pickup which solve a whole lot of issues and question marks on the offense.
I like adding Allen. Was a good move. The issue is they didn’t get enough for Dunbar so in essence it’s like they traded Dunbar for Allen, which is an awful trade.
