A rumor surfaced recently indicating the Lions discussed a Matthew Stafford trade. GM Bob Quinn denied this, and multiple key parties were quick to state the 11-year veteran quarterback does not want to leave Detroit. Stafford’s agent, Tom Condon, informed NFL.com’s Michael Silver his client does not want a trade (Twitter link). The quarterback’s wife, Kelly Stafford, shared on her Instagram (Twitter links via the Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett) they are not angling for a new NFL city. Matthew Stafford, 32, is under contract for three more seasons.
Here is the latest from the quarterback realm, moving to a passer who very much is available for trade:
- Despite the Saints set to start a 41-year-old Drew Brees and apply a high tender to intriguing gadget player/backup Taysom Hill, they may not be prepared to draft a passer this year. Although some mock drafts have the Saints taking Utah State’s Jordan Love, Larry Holder of The Athletic notes (subscription required) the Saints do not appear to be interested. The Saints hold the No. 24 pick in the draft, and it might now be a surprise to see Love still on the board at that point.
- Brees-Hill 2020 looks like the Saints’ plan. Combine buzz centered around Bridgewater’s next team, with Holder speaking to no NFL decision-maker who expected Brees’ backup of the past two years to return. Sean Payton said it would be unrealistic for the Saints to bring back all three, and Bridgewater is expected to receive interest as a starter in free agency. The Bears, Buccaneers, Chargers, Panthers and Patriots may possess some interest, Holder hears. Though, unlike Tom Brady and Philip Rivers, no team has been connected to Bridgewater yet.
- Like Brady and Rivers, Andy Dalton has also been connected to a team. The Bears discussed a trade with the Bengals but may have to battle other teams for the nine-year veteran starter. Dalton’s agent has been working with the Bengals on potential Dalton deals, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com names the Colts and Patriots — in addition to the Bears — as teams who could potentially have interest in the contract-year passer (video link). The Colts have been connected to Rivers at multiple junctures this week, while some around the league have indeed viewed New England as a landing spot for Dalton if Brady does decide to defect in free agency. Cincinnati and New England have made multiple trades involving high-profile Bengals, and the same two decision-makers — Mike Brown and Bill Belichick — remain in place from when Corey Dillon and Chad Johnson were dealt to New England in 2004 and 2011, respectively.
Just curious, any word on what team(s) wanted to trade for Stafford?
The team it should be is the Cowboys.
Riiight
new england would make a ton of sense
Stanford is foolish, he should be ditching the Lions as fast as he can.
Stafford for Tribisky and a fifth round pick
Stafford gets a team with a great defence in a win now mode and he can run the offence better than Mitch. Bears would need to add a WR or 2.
Lions get a young QB to either try rebuild with or to try tank with for Trevor Lawrence next year, either way they will end up with a young QB anda pick for Stafford
As a bears fan that made me laugh. In order to trade for Trubisky you would undoubtedly be tanking the year.
It would take a first round pick to get Stafford, remember what the Eagles got for Sam Bradford and Stafford is way more valuable. Also Mitch has negative value.
you’d never see QBs in the same division get traded for each other, let alone 2 QBs get traded for each other
Doubt the lions are even considering trading him but if they did it would be for multiple picks, particularly if they were to trade him in the division
You need to pee in a cup. Preferably ASAP. Wow
I’m a bears fan who has not given up on trubisky as much as everyone else, as bears fans we all should know it can definitely be worse, however the proposed trade is one of the most ludicrous things I have ever seen, do you understand how good Stafford is? He has made the Detroit “Cleveland browns” Lions be an ok team for years and aside from Calvin Johnson he has had absolutely no help, not too mention how he’s tough as bricks, not too mention he could never run nagys offense, not too mention that trubisky isn’t worth a backup quarterback from 90% of nfl teams, not too mention the bears and lions are in the same division…I could keep going, however in summary Matthew stafford will never once in his life wear a bears jersey
To, not too
To be fair, stafford has had some very good WR’s like golden Tate and Kenny golladay outside of Calvin. What’s held Stafford back is he has had almost no run game his entire career, and his defense is almost always mediocre at best
That trade would suck in comparison to the rumors of New England a 3rd or possibly a 2nd round pick to the Lions for Stafford.
Horrible trade for Lions, Trubisky just isn’t very good.
If Stafford is traded, the Lions would take a $32 million dead money cap hit. It’s not happening.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been more interest in Bridgewater. He’s clearly better than any backup QB on the market and could replace Brady or Winston if they part ways with their current teams.
Bridgewater is going to make some team look fooling by parlaying his 5 game hot stretch on a loaded team into a starting gig which will surely disappoint. He’s Jacoby Brissett w a better ability to read at least a second option.
AJ green and dalton to the patriots for their first. Their second might get that done
CASTEFOOTBALL.US
Stafford to Washington for their no. 1; Lions draft Young & Herbert in first round. Very un-Lionslike.
Remember the last Oregon QB the Lions drafted?
I like Stafford but I wouldn’t trade for him given all his back issues.
There must be somethings in the water to think any team would give up a first or second for Stafford let alone a player and pick come on now
Stafford is worth a 1st round pick and anyone who thinks the Lions who drafted him #1 overall, would trade him for anything less isn’t thinking clearly. AZ drafted Rosen in the top 10 and shipped him out for tons less. Drafting QB’s high are risky & Stafford is a known commodity so yeah, a 1st round pick is worth it & he doesn’t need 2 years to develop. Chicago fans are dreaming if they think anyone wants their garbage QB. He’s about to get released in a year so he will join the group of busts 1st round QB picks.
