The Lions and Eagles have reached agreement on a trade that will send cornerback Darius Slay to Philly, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The Eagles will send a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick to the Lions and give Slay the lucrative new contract he has been seeking.
The two sides discussed a possible trade prior to the deadline last season, but were unable to come to terms. Talks picked up steam on Wednesday, as Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (on Twitter) noted.
The Eagles will give Slay a three-year, $50MM contract extension with $30MM guaranteed, according to Rapoport (Twitter link). The new deal places Slay at the top of the cornerback market; the salary is commensurate with his talent, unlike his previous deal. Slay outperformed his four-year, $48MM contract as the market advanced and he was unhappy about the prospect of playing out that final year.
Slay, 29, notched 46 tackles and two interceptions last year en route to his third straight Pro Bowl. The advanced metrics weren’t high on his work, but he’s fared much better in previous seasons. In 2018, for example, Slay ranked 23rd among 112 eligible CBs. And, in 2017, he graded out as one of PFF’s best as he hauled in a league-leading eight interceptions.
The deal leaves the Lions with a major hole to fill, but their reloaded draft stockpile should help. The deal will bring them the Nos. 85 and 166 overall picks in the draft and they now own five of the top 85 picks. Their first pick comes at No. 3 overall and they could stretch their ammo even further by trading down.
Way back on Monday, March 16th (it’s been a long week), Byron Jones became the league’s highest-paid cornerback by signing a five-year, $82.5MM deal with the Dolphins. That mantle now belongs to Slay, who clocks in with an average annual value of $16.67MM.
yayayayayaya
Thank god
Whyyyyyy Lions
Because he wanted out and a new contract and they had to deal him. I wish they wouldn’t have dealt him within the NFC, but a 3rd and a 5th isn’t too bad considering their lack of leverage. A 2nd would have been ideal.
He wanted out….don’t worry, yous are getting Desmond Trufant to replace him.
He didn’t want out, he wanted to be the top paid CB and the Lions didn’t want to do that. Slay’s great, but last season was a good reason not to give him $16.7 million per year. Trade is provides Slay with the contract he wanted and the Lions get a couple of picks.
He wanted out….his response to the Trufant signing was,”I’m happy for him,but hopefully this speeds up the trade process for me”
Wow making slay the highest paid corner when he is about to start regressing…… sounds a little desperate
Agree.
The Eagles are desperate at corner. They were last year too.
3yrs $50mil extension. wow. that $17mil per. slot but I feel slot better about him then Byron Jones
“slot”?
I think he meant “a lot”
hahaha enjoy your 3rd and 5th round picks lions fans. should be able to add depth to the practice squad.
Shit, we’re already paying 10+ mill per year for several players that aren’t worthy of more than PS roles. No worse organization in sports, period.
I have the Pirates on line 1. They would like to dispute your last sentence.
1 playoff win since 1958. 1-12 during that span.
The Browns owner moved them out of state in the middle of the night. Browns will always be worse than the Lions until they win a Super Bowl.
Whatever you say, BJ.
Browns might have something to say about that.
Ramsey gonna make the Rams pay 20 per.
So Slay is paid as if he is the best corner on the planet yet he’s worth only a 3 and 5. The Lions are idiots. Born in 64 and I have no hope of seeing a championship
Play the game – If Detroit had no intention of paying him the money the Eagles gave him he may have sat out as much as possible this year being more disruption than benefit. If the Lions lost him next year AND assuming they didn’t go overpay (Vaitai) some other free agents they might have gotten a 3rd round comp pick only. Now they get a better 3rd and the 5th.
You don’t always get fair value. The Lions had no leverage. That said, a 3rd and a 5th isn’t too bad when the dude needs a contract. I’m not a Lions fan, but they didn’t do too bad here. Where’s their leverage with a guy who wants a contract, will likely hold out, and everyone knows he wants out? They didn’t do too bad here.
Wont know whether the Lions got any trade value until we see who they get with those picks. If they get another Golladay with the 3rd its good. If they get another Orlovsky with the 5th then not so good.
The fact that somebody was gonna have to give him that type of contract,is part of the reason they weren’t gonna get much better for him.Needed a team with space, willing to pay him,and somewhere he would be willing to sign without a threat of a hold out.
Slay isnt the best corner, but neither is Jones
Yes Howie!!!
Eagles are going to get a few comp picks too so a 3rd and a 5th will not hurt them in the draft much
Agreed, and they signed Chris Harris instead they’d be losing picks next offseason.
Eagles secondary goes from questionable,to a strength.Could actually have 2 new starters on the outside, with Slay and Trevor Williams.Maddox,Jones,Douglas & Leblanc compete for that 2nd spot, slot, and offer decent depth.Mills moving inside to safety gives them a pretty good athlete over the top to pair with McLeod.
The D-lineman rotation could be interesting too.Could Jackson be an end?Could they go with a 3-4 front? Gonna be interesting seeing this defense play out.
Does anyone know what the offer was that Denver made last year to the Lions for Slay?
Wasn’t it Chris Harris for Slay?
that what I thought
Ok y’all are right. Lions wanted Chris Harris and a high pick for Slay.
Why not just sign Byron Jones and keep the draft picks.
Byron Jones has two career interceptions. Slay had two last year.
A third and a fifth. Typical Lions garbage.
