Earlier today, the Texans stunned the football world by trading star DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals. We’ll run down the latest on the trade here:
- The Texans recognized that they would have to renegotiate Hopkins’ contract at some point if they wanted to keep him, but they’re prioritizing new deals for Deshaun Watson and offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil, Yahoo’s Charles Robinson tweets. Hopkins had three years remaining on his team-friendly contract, so the Texans felt that a fresh deal was premature. Meanwhile, they see opportunities to replenish at wide receiver via the draft, as well as some options for trades. All in all, the Texans viewed the Hopkins trade as the first step towards a larger plan that will cover them on both sides of the ball.
- Another contributing factor: Ongoing friction between Hopkins and head coach Bill O’Brien, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets.
but they did not have to eat DJs contract and they should have gotten 2nds i mean it did not HAVE to trade him and they did not HAVE to take back DJ and since they did take back DJ they should have said ok give us a 1 and 3 and a 5 and we will send you a 4.
I’m sure they did and it got declined.
Hopkins seems like a clubhouse cancer. They used their foresight and got more back than the Steelers did for problemchild AB
if DeAndre is a cancer then O’Brien is a pallet of cigarettes
yeah as someone who is a texans fan and followed the team i can not recall much of anything that would lead me to believe that DHOP was a cancer in the CH.
Or O’Brien is the tool he seems to be and just gave away his best player for garbage.
idk man i mean i know AB did a semi decent job of hiding it for years but i dont think HOP is anywhere in that league of diva has AB.
The Texans need a legitimate GM. O’Brien destroyed that team being the GM
i mean give away clowney FINE … overpay for Tunsil and Duke fair enough let the honey badger walk …k…. but this is some straight up BS.
absolute power corrupts absolutely … someone needs to be doing the checks and balances on BOB and i think we see NOW why Brian Gaine was ran out of town BOB would come up to him with this DA trade requests and he would tell him to f off im sure.
when asked by reporters why did you not get more for DHop? …. obrien said “thats not my job”.
ok texans use the money to sign Amari(obviously it would never happen, but still) or get Robby Anderson or Manny Sanders for cheap
but they really did not save much money so i dont see that
and if BOB wanted a second rounder so bad maybe he should have traded fuller instead ?
Doesn’t matter how deep this draft is at WR. They had a 3x 1st team all-pro in his prime, who almost never misses games, and is a top 3 player at his position in the league.
Truly the worst trade I have ever seen, has anyone ever heard a story the Hopkins is bad in the locker room? Am I missing something? I hope to whoever that Ryan pace is on the phone right now offering trubisky for Watson, seems along the same lines as this trade
the exact same thing was said when BOB traded for Tunsil last year … every gm has got to be lining up to try and take advantage of this kid who is not playing with a full deck.
I don’t think you could find anybody in Houston that would rather have BOB than DHop
Bill O’Brien is turning into Chip Kelly.
Where are all our Cards “fans” that have complained about Steve Keim over the last couple years saying he was the worst GM ever?? Traded DJ and his ENTIRE contract and a 2nd rounder for DHop! Are you kidding me? Now we’ll be able to keep Kenyan AND add arguably the best receiver in the league to this KK offense!
Would love to have seen Keim and KK’s faces when the heard O’Brien agree to this deal! Jaws dropped to the floor!
Great job guys! Now a couple pieces on the DEF and we could have a 12 win season!
I don’t know who’ll win the off-season, but man, it’s sure clear Houston just lost it.
O’Brien is an idiot. He has made a lot of moves that have had people scratching their heads, but this takes the cake!
He is in way over his head. The Texans ownership must be equally stupid.
I feel sorry for faithful Texan fans.
Texans don’t believe DH is worth top 3 receiver money. I watched every play and love DH, but he did not get much separation last year. He is a demon on contested balls and short slants/outs, but he rarely got separation down the field unless the play broke down or he crossed into a zone. NFL evaluators have over 20 receivers with 1st or 2nd round grades in this draft. The Texans will get a quality WR pick 40 (cards) or 57 (Texans)and an edge rusher they had to have. DH will get a top 3 contract for 5 years that the Cards will regret by year 3. DJ will be a good back in our system if healthy. The Texans should not have taken all the salary back on DJ contract and should not have swapped 4th round picks. Both bad and unnecessary moves.
the vikings did great especially with the light return the texans got for a better WR.
So the Texans figure that trading away their top offensive weapon is going to make negotiations with Watson easier? Good luck.
