Cam Newton is on the trading block and the Bears are among the teams with interest in him, Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com (on Twitter) hears. The expectation is that Newton will be released by the Panthers in the coming days, but Jones notes that the Bears might not want to compete for him on the open market. Instead, they might be willing to give up something in a trade to bring the former MVP to Chicago.
[RELATED: Cam Newton: I “Never Asked” For Panthers To Trade Me]
The Panthers announced on Tuesday that they have given Newton permission to seek a trade. Soon after, the quarterback took to Instagram to let the world know that he did not want out of Carolina.
“Stop with the word play! I never asked for it,” Newton wrote. “There is no dodging this one: I love the Panthers to death and will always love you guys! Please do not try and play me, or manipulate the narrative and act like I wanted this. You forced me into this!”
The Panthers later agreed to a sizable deal with Saints free agent Teddy Bridgewater, cementing him as the team’s new starting QB. The Bears, who are looking for alternatives to Mitchell Trubisky, were among the clubs with interest in Bridgewater up until that point. Now, their search could lead them to Newton.
I don’t think the Bears can create the cap space to accommodate Newton and even if they could it would look like a Hail Mary pass by Ryan Pace to save his job. The offensive line’s ability to keep Newton healthy is certainly in question and then there is Cam himself who would actually be more high maintenance than Cutler was at his worst.
Ryan pace is an elite gm at putting together a defense and picking in rounds 4-6, he is literally the exact opposite when it comes to offense and rounds 1-3
He’s like a GM version of Lovie Smith.
Ryan Pace is only elite and being a terrible GM
They can extend Allen Robinson’s contract and make some room. And I hear they are working on that.
Well earned. Well deserved.
they can actually, if they add him right now they’re still under the projected cap with estimated draft pick salary included
If Newton is healthy again, he’s the best of the quarterbacks who were in free agency this year (Brady, Rivers and Prescott all included.
Interesting option for a coach who can handle Newton, who as we all know, is a bit of prima donna.
healthy or not how can you say cam better than a guy who been to what 9 superbowls? the same cam who got laugh at for not jumping on the ball. what has cam done since that one great season the panthers had. no way in hell cam is better than brady even if brady 42.
Newton might be the best athlete available but definitely not the best QB, not by a long shot.
Brady went to 9 Super Bowls and is the goat. That doesn’t make him better than Cam right now.
At least we know Brady can play. Newton hasn’t been healthy for several years.
Actually Hector, Brady is WAY better than Newton has ever been.
I do not believe he is healthy. And no one knows if he is. He missed games at the end of 18- shoulder issues, and then most of last year with lis franc. Lis frank injury for a QB who relies on his legs as a large part of his arsenal is not a good thing. With all the travel restrictions… no one(not even his former team) has been able to give him physical.
I say…. NO to this idea.Would rather trade for Foles if Jags help with money on current deal
good news for the Packers… the Bears will still suck.
Enjoy losing Blake Martinez and Brian Baluga, troll.
Bravely written, cheese troll.
Maybe if they have a time machine…
I’d rather take a shot on Jameis and his new eyes.
at least jamies is healthy, cam future is up in the air. we dont even know how healthy he will be this up coming season.
After blindly missing on Watson and Mahomes and having to bale on his second first round pick in 4 years, Pace has signed an oft injured LB in Trevathan and let a young homegrown stud in Kwiatkowski (sp?) leave, overpaid an over the hill TE in Graham (who was he bidding against??), let their only strong LB backup/starter in Kevin Pierre Louis leave and signed an edge rusher on his 4th team in 4 years to a huge deal… And now he’s interested in the biggest ‘I burger with me sauce’ QB in the league who may or may not be physically able to play. Brilliant.
Ryan Pace: “I found us a short term solution at the kicker position so I think I deserve a pay raise”.
I will state this. Watson and Mahomes would not have fared well in Chicago. Stagnant play-calling, pathetic OL, underwhelming WR’s and TE’s that don’t block well or run routes well.
To that end, I wouldn’t call it a miss. I would call it a ‘can any QB thrive in this system?’ If you are going to focus on running then beef up the line with run blocking beefcakes and only use play action for passing .. and get a downfield threat to keep the safeties honest. If you are going to try to run some slapshot West Coast thing then get the right personnel. So that is where the GM has failed, but I put it more fully on the HC/OC. You build to fit your talent if you are good.
This is the best case scenario for the Bears with QBs. Hope they find a way to get it done.
Noooooooo
dear lord,
NO!!!!!!!!
Not anymore.
