Having bypassed Black Monday, and now Tuesday and most of Wednesday, the Cowboys have yet to fire Jason Garrett. The Cowboys are a bit behind on the coaching carousel as a result, but that does not appear to be a concern for the organization at this point.
However, this process may finally be headed toward a resolution. Garrett will meet with Jerry and Stephen Jones on Thursday, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. This will be the sides’ third meeting since the team’s season concluded.
Although the optics of this situation paint the Cowboys as being less certain on their decision than the Giants or Browns were on theirs, Moore adds that there are no expectations Garrett will be brought back for an 11th season. His contract expires Jan. 14 and is not expected to be renewed.
Garrett was believed to have needed to pilot the Cowboys to the NFC championship game to keep his job. With Dallas missing the playoffs after their spree of offseason extensions, there does not appear to be a way the longtime HC will keep his job. But the methodical pace here is certainly unusual in an era when firings on Week 17 Sunday occur annually.
Jim Harbaugh to Dallas. He’s failed at UM. 0-4 vs OSU, 1-3 vs MSU & 0-4 in bowl games.
1-4 in Bowls, 3-2 vs MSU and 0-5 vs OSU.
Either way, he’ll bolt is my feeling. Dallas will gladly pay 1 year salary buyout.
So your statement based on a win-loss record is horribly wrong and your response is “either way”?
I was wrong on 1 win in bowls, 0-5 rather than 0-4 against OSU and off on MSU. Yeah, he hasn’t lived up to the hype. I believe he’ll look for work in the NFL this offseason.
Its funny theres people who actually think he would be good for a team to hire.
I agree, and he completely wore out his welcome with the 49ers. He’s more of a name than a coach.
Wore out his welcome, but the team performed well while he was there. I’ll take the results over people’s feelings.
He would wear out his welcome with Jerry faster than he did with Jed and Balke. The Niners are in a much better spot now that York realized he needed to let football people handle the football decisions. Wonder if Jerry will ever figure that out.
come on jerry, keep your yes man there and ruin all the cowboy fans dreams of a new coach
Why would Jerry be in any rush when he has all the spotlight on him
will Jerry just declare himself coach already
This is actually smart on Dallas part. Jerry is going over his list of who he wants and getting feedback on if/will they take the job based on his order. Gives him time to review the list while still treating his friend(Garrett) with respect as he leaves him out the door.
That’s…very much the opposite. Your theory is that he’s trying to figure out if candidates will take the job, before it’s available, while he leaves the current coach twisting in the wind for no reason? That would *surely* help attract the top candidates and not give them *any* reason to worry about how things work in Dallas.
As long as Jones waits, the Cowboys are relevant in the news.
They are always relevant
As long as the NFC East is trash, I guess you have a point.
The Cowboys probably have one of the playoff coaches lined up already. Nothing to do with attention; grow up people.
You let him coach on a “lame duck” contract year, scream to anyone who’ll listen how unhappy you are, and put out there the expectations that must be met to keep his job but he’s still there? Just fire the guy already. I don’t know that I’d call this treating him with respect when he ultimately loses his job. He may have a chance to latch on elsewhere let the guy go
Jason contract expires on Jan 14 if he wants to latch on elsewhere he can. His name hasnt appeared on anybody’s list of candidates so he is also in no rush to be let go.
The lame duck contract year excuse always makes me laugh. All it means is a Coach has to do his job with a little bit of pressure. It’s not an excuse to be lousy at their job. If they do well, all teams get to bid for them after the season. Their price goes up.
I agree with Seth on this. What exactly did Jerry Jones gain by declaring Garrett was a lame duck and turning the second half of the season into a soap opera drama?
The same thing that fuels all narcissists…. attention and the spotlight on them.
What could possibly need to be discussed in 3 meetings that you couldn’t have already figured out? Unless Jones is going to try to avoid embarrassment and is going back channel to try to secure a HC before firing Garrett.
The Cowboys may be trying to work out a new position in which Garrett can stay with the organisation. Garrett has spent most of his professional life with the Cowboys and has generally conducted himself with professionalism and dignity. He’s also not been awful as head coach, though the last couple of seasons, he’s lost control of the players.
Dak, Zeke and Amari Cooper are all disrespectful poorly spoken egoists any way. This is not the locker room of Tony Romo and Jason Whitten any more (I imagine Garrett could count on those players to support him). It did not help at all that the old fool Jerry part way through the season threw Garrett under the bus.
There’s no reason to push him right out of the organisation, especially as a lot of the executives, including Jerrah are rapidly aging the last few years.
Garrett has been publicly humiliated by Jerry Jones so I can’t possibly see him staying on in any compacity.
We get it. You’re racist.
Irvin alone spoke his mind more often than Dak, Zeke, & Amari combined. Your comment makes it sound like you believe a good old boy on the mic makes a difference in team success, even if it’s Ricky Bobby giving interviews without knowing what to do with his hands
Dak is about as respectful as they come. Cooper is soft spoken. Alec, do you also go by the name Stephen Miller?
None of these guys will sign a contract. One of them has already held out and sabotaged a season. Collectively they are determined to sink the Cowboys salary cap, costing the Cowboys the golden mid-tier of their defense and/or offensive line.
I’ve had more exposure to Elliott than the other two, so perhaps I’m judging the other two musketeers’ personal comportment too harshly. Zeke does match my description.
I agree with CrossEyedLemon: “Garrett has been publicly humiliated by Jerry Jones so I can’t possibly see him staying on in any capacity.”
Perhaps with Mike McCarthy in the building on an expensive and bulletproof head coaching contract, some kind of order can be restored.
