49ers defensive backs coach Joe Woods is on track to become the Browns’ next defensive coordinator, sources tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). All that remains, Schefter hears, is figuring out a contract.
The Browns, reportedly, were down to Woods and incumbent Steve Wilks as of last week. Today, the Browns told Wilks that he’s out, as Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com tweets. Barring something unexpected, Woods will get the job.
Woods, 49, has history with new Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski – Woods was a Vikes assistant between 2006-2013. All in all, Woods comes with 16 years of NFL coaching experience for five different teams. Before he hooked on as the Niners’ LBs coach, he spent four years with the Broncos, including two as their DC.
While Woods’ two Broncos defenses were solid, the 49ers’ rise from 23rd to second in pass-defense DVOA has obviously been key to the NFC No. 1 seed’s success. The 49ers’ Richard Sherman-led secondary has become a much better unit compared to last season, when Sherman did not play at a Pro Bowl level. Woods also oversaw the Broncos’ dominant No-Fly Zone secondary that helped the team to a championship in 2015, working under Wade Phillips.
Rather rare to see the Browns make this many staff hires without totally botching it. Maybe that happens with the GM decision but they’re on course for an excellent grade at this point.
I’m crossing my fingers, but I’m also waiting for the other shoe to drop as well. Stefanski was my first choice, and I love O’Shea as just a position coach too. Woods would be a solid hire too.
So far they have a nice mix of young and experienced staff. I like that they avoided coaches with large egos that would try to restrain natural talents like Mayfield and OBJ with a heavy handed approach. Tom Coughlin tried that “my way or the highway” approach in Jacksonville and nearly had a mass player mutiny down there.
I’m warming up to the Stefanski hire. Woods would appease me, since my choice was Selah.
Especially glad that Wilks is gone.
He’s the defensive backs coach and the LBs coach for the 49ers? Article lists both.
Browns need to change their name and colors or they will never have a winning season again or a super bowl appearance in this decade
They have a name with a long history and nothing wrong with the colors.
You see players win or lose not color of the jersey or name of the team
He’s just looking for attention with these comments.
All I know when players leave this disastrous franchise they succeed like Raheem mostert, but when good players join this team the disaster follows their career change( oh yah that’s y they are called the career killer, mistake at the lake and factory of sadness)
As a 49ers fan I’ll be sad to see him go. He’ll make an excellent dc. (In fact, originally I had assumed Cleveland would hire Salah as hc. I was hoping woods would take over dc in sf)
