Bruce Allen is wrapping up his 10th season in the Redskins’ front office, but Washington’s team president has not been given the lead role in identifying the franchise’s next head coach.
Dan Snyder has been working on the team’s HC situation for several weeks, with Albert Breer of SI.com reporting he’s assembled a group of football people to help on this front. None of those in this committee of sorts are Redskins employees, Breer notes (on Twitter).
The longtime Redskins owner has kept his football staff in the dark on some of the changes he’s mulling, Breer adds, inviting speculation Allen will not be in the team’s future plans. This would undoubtedly please a sizable sect of Washington’s fanbase, but as of now, the veteran exec remains the top cog in Washington’s football operations staff.
Allen has plans of his own on how the franchise should proceed, per John Keim of ESPN.com, who confirms Snyder has left him out of certain parts of this process (Twitter link). A November report indicated Allen’s status for 2020 was uncertain, so these next several days will be critical for the Redskins.
Snyder is believed to be far along in this search, which has yet to produce any known candidates. Though, Breer identifies Ron Rivera as a name to monitor. Interim HC Bill Callahan would like to be considered, but it’s unlikely given Washington’s post-Gruden performance that the team will go with the 63-year-old coach as its next full-time leader.
The Redskins are 62-96-1 during Allen’s tenure, one that has now included three head coaches. Should they lose to the Cowboys on Sunday, they will secure the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft.
As a redskins fan, rooting for a loss, #2 pick and complete burning down and rebuild of the front office.
62-96 says it all…. man does not have a clue what he is doing
If they dump Bruce Allen and bring in an experienced younger GM with the power to build without meddling from Snyder (tall ask I know), then the ideal candidate would be Mike McCarthy. As a Packers fan, I fully recognize that it was time for a change and that the QB relationship and offense in general had gone stale but MM is still a good coach and good teacher for a developing arm like Haskins.
I’m hoping my Browns dump Freddie and bring in someone like MM.
They need somebody to instill discipline.
Mike McCarthy and “ good coach” will never go together. He won one SuperBowl with a QB that should have 3 at least. Don’t get the fascination with McCarthy. Snyder probably will keep Allen. The Jags and Falcons are making the same mistakes by not clearing house also this year so next year when the results are the same it should be a wild GM- Coach offseason.
His GM never spent in free agency to get his QB any help, made terrible trades and only replaced injured players with “street ” free agents. I’m not saying MM is Chuck Noll but he’s not all to blame for Rodgers not having multiple championships.
I know Snyder stinks, but I don’t buy that “they’ll never win unless he sells the team” narrative. Theres no reason that we can’t win if somebody reaponsible is in place making the football decisions. Fire Allen. He’s the one who has been the problem all these years.
The players didn’t trust Gruden who didn’t trust Allen who doesn’t trust Snyder. Yeah, I see plenty of success in the Redskins future…lol.
I agree with cross eyed lemon & Nats. When they lose Sunday it looks like the golden ticket to another Defensive player like Chase Young. Tear it all down. Of course that would be 3 Ohio State players in 2 drafts.
Lane Kiffin?
I wouldn’t put it past him to bail on Ole Miss for the NFL after being their HC for about (checks watch) 15 minutes. But, I think he’s got vengeance on his mind against Alabama and Nick Saban. He’ll stay put… for now.
Ron Rivera to Atlanta, the offence already has Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Ridley, Freeman and Hooper. Rivera will demand the respect of everyone and will go along way to sorting out that awful defence.
Then of course use the draft to bring in some defenders and help that situation
