Dec. 29: ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN’s Sunday Countdown that Gettleman is indeed likely to be back with the Giants in 2020 (h/t Giants Daily on Twitter).
Dec. 19: While it seems as though the Giants are increasingly likely to part with head coach Pat Shurmur this offseason, the status of GM Dave Gettleman is a bit murkier. Many have speculated that Gettleman, like Shumur, is on the hot seat, but Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv does not necessarily believe that’s the case.
One team source has told Vacchiano that there has been no indication at all that a GM change is forthcoming, and while that may not mean much in and of itself, everyone seems to agree that ownership does not want to make such a change. Co-owner John Mara has spoken in the past about the difficulties that come with a GM ouster, including massive internal overhaul and potential changing of philosophies. Because of that reality, the Giants have historically been patient with their GMs; as Vacchiano notes, from 1979 through 2017, the Giants had three general managers with an average tenure of 13 seasons.
Ownership understands that it can take years for a GM to build an organization in his image, and while a head coach cannot be expected to spin gold out of a roster of hay, it’s much easier to evaluate a coach over the short-term because one can at least see his approach, the discipline he instills in his team, and his game management. Vacchiano concedes that Gettleman has made some head-scratching moves, but he also believes that the former Panthers GM has not done anything to hamstring the Giants over the long-term.
Vacchiano writes, “[Gettleman] took over a team with salary cap issues, weighed down with bloated contracts given to overrated players, an aging quarterback, a crumbling offensive line, a locker room that had just revolted on its coach and showed an alarming lack of character and accountability in many corners, and was finishing off a 3-13 season — its fourth losing season in five years. And he not only found a franchise quarterback, he paired him with one of the most promising running backs to hit the NFL in years, and revamped the roster with a small army of first- and second-year players — 10 of which were in the starting lineup on Sunday afternoon.”
It’s unclear whether the Giants share Vacchiano’s views, but given the team’s track record, it would not be surprising to see Gettleman back with Big Blue in 2020. But considering Gettleman was in charge of the Shurmur hire, it will be interesting to keep an eye on the dynamics of the next head coaching search if Gettleman stays but Shurmur goes.
They should both be gone.
It doesn’t take ‘years’ to build a team. On average, each team changes 17-20 players on their roster annually. On a 53 man roster, in 2 years, you can pretty much overall 90% of the roster w/o trying to.
This is a silly comment. Is everyone signed to 1 or 2 year deals? Willing to bite the salary cap bullet and release vets just for the sake of turnover?
They are all signed to longer deals, but during different years. Granted, most are depth but plenty of starters change teams in FA every year. Heck, players under contract get traded away all the time. Look no further than Miami for that this year.
Agreed, you can flip a whole roster in a year or two. Might not work out but you can do it. Browns and Raiders both have done it last few years. Steelers flipped a defensive in 2 years.
Just look at the 49ers how quickly they turned things around.
Yes, but changing things for the sake of it doesnt really result in success. If i’m the Giants I’d try to bring Rivera in with Gettleman and see if that helps. shurmur should be gone.
No. Gettleman is a damn train wreck.
The coach isn’t the problem. I’m not saying to keep him but this GM has ruined two franchises now. He shouldn’t be allowed to run a peewee team.
Have you been watching the games? Coaching is absolutely the problem.
What I’m saying is there’s not actually a way to know because this clown doesn’t know how to put together a team.
I keep telling my friends that the issue with the roster is the switch to a 3-4 from a 4-3. Those switches usually take 2-3 years to be successful as you need almost a complete turn over of personnel. So right now, the Giants just don’t have the right type of talent on the defense to run a proper 3-4 defense. I expect Gettleman to dump a lot of contracts this offseason and make a lot of defensive signings if they choose to stick with the 3-4 scheme.
After they dump a lot of players and contracts I think they should go back to a 4-3 hiring a DC that can successfully run one. As for HC I’d like a proven guy with a winning record be it Rivera, McCarthy, Garrett.
The HC is a multiple time coaching loser. Needs to go golfing with Jeff Fisher.
And the GM took Cam Newton, got rid of his primary weapon in Steve Smith, didn’t replace him and said “Cam go do it”. And what did he do here? Get rid of ODB and not replaced him. Told Jones “go do it”.
The coaching is definitely a problem, but Gettleman has been an unmitigated disaster in every single way. Bad at trading, bad at drafting, only signs former Cardinals and Panthers wash ups as free agents, bad a coaching hires (Bettcher and Schurmer are awful), bad at player interaction/relations (not a single player has anything good to say about him), bad at even the little things like media relations, the list goes on.
Just two examples of his complete incompetence: he threw away draft compensation by not offering Landon Collins the franchise tag (when it was a total guarantee that he would not take it) and he threw away a draft pick by trading for a half season of Leonard Williams when he could have just signed him in the offseason and given up nothing.
Gettleman is the WORST GM I’ve seen for the Giants and I’ve been a fan for almost thirty years.
Those two examples are not not indicative of anything. First off, that’s not how the franchise tag works. Collins wasn’t going to sign a franchise tender which would have led to a hold out.
The Leonard Williams was an attempt to save money by not getting into a bidding war once he became a FA. The Giants are able to negotiate with him for months before he hits FA and might be able to get him signed to a friendlier deal. It’s a risk, but a worthwhile risk.
Uh, no. Gettleman left draft compensation on the table by not offering Collins anything.
And Leonard Williams is absolutely absurd. Players do *not*, like ever, take hometown discounts. They don’t. He threw away a third rounder for a half season of Leonard Williams. There’s no discount to be had. Even if it saved a little money, it’s not worth a draft pick. The move was not made for the future. It was made out desperation to save his job because of how awful the defense is. Give me a break with this ‘saving money’ nonsense.
Well, that’s certainly some opinions. I’m not saying Gettleman has done great. But I don’t share your opinion on him being a disaster.
But please explain to me how he “left draft compensation on the table”?
I can’t believe I just saw someone stick up for the Williams trade. You’re an idiot.
Trading a 3rd round pick for the rights to negotiate with Williams is crazy. That is such a valuable pick wasted, just like the 4th rounder on Lauletta. Plus Williams wants to be paid like a top dlineman. Golden has really been the only successful ex panther/cardinal he has brought in. My fear is if Ron Rivera is brought in the trend of ex Panthers will continue. I’m not a fan of gettleman, but I will say some of his draft picks Ximenes, Connelly, Slayton, Hill, Carter could be good. But the jury is still out on them. They did miss out on Josh Allen as I feel like Jones and Lawrence were reaches. The young corners have all been disasters but at least with Baker some improvement. They did rebuild the Oline and make it over, albeit unsuccessfully but at least tried. I don’t know what they do from here. They need a lot to improve this team, starting with a new HC.
I think the Giants might actually take a page out of the Jets playbook. Hire the head coach they want and have that guy tell them who he wants to work with as the general manager.
Please never take a page from the Jets.
Not a Giants fan, and don’t pay terribly close attention to their games….but I almost would have expected the opposite. The Tate signing didn’t make a ton of sense, and the Solder signing has backfired….but realistically probably makes sense to ditch both as this team was supposed to be more competitive this year.
Gettleman has traded multiple picks on multiple occasions for bloated contracts (Ogletree) and again this year (a very high 3rd round pick and a 5th rounder) for Leonard Williams (an upcoming UFA). The latter is in a season where the Giants were nowhere near competing when he made the trade.
Also, how is there such consensus and belief that Jones is a “franchise QB”? He is 32nd overall in QB DVOA; that doesn’t exactly scream “franchise QB.” The guy is also an absolute turnover machine.
The roster management, coaching, the handling of the locker room culture … literally everything … is a downright disaster from top-to-bottom.
Does Dolan own the Gnats too?
Can you do emojis on here? hand to face lol.
Rory, if you are trying to make him look stupid or just look like he as a Smurfs hat on your doing a good job with that pic.
Gettleman doesn’t need much help to look stupid and the photographer must have caught him on a day when he forgot to wear his tin foil hat.
“Vacchiano writes, “[Gettleman] took over a team with salary cap issues, weighed down with bloated contracts given to overrated players, and was finishing off a 3-13 season”
And in only two seasons, with two high picks, has turn them into a 4-11 team.
