Brett Maher could be out of a job, head coach Jason Garrett said in an interview on 105.3 The Fan (Twitter link via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News). His comments came hours after Maher missed yet another field goal in Thursday night’s loss to the Bears.
“Obviously, we have to do a close evaluation of it,” Garrett said. “We brought three kickers in earlier in the week. We decided to give Brett an opportunity this week. It didn’t work out. So we have to take a real close, hard look at that.”
The Cowboys’ previous tryout featured former Chargers and Redskin kicker Nick Rose, Austin MacGinnis, and Tristan Vizcaino. From the sound of it, the Cowboys will look into other options if they bump Maher.
The Cowboys’ season is now on the brink and while there’s plenty of blame to go around, Maher’s struggles haven’t helped matters. He’s connected on just 66.7% of his attempts this year, well below his 80.6% success rate in 2018.
How about a coaching change, too!
I honestly don’t think it matters. It’s been almost 30 years since the Cowboys were truly competitive and there has been one constant. Unless someone comes along that has true control over football decisions, it will continue. Success in business does not equal competent football mind. The Jones’ need to realize this. Once and for all.
You forgot the owner charge!!
Let’s see new kicker same so-called HC same owner> Miss the playoffs! So predictable!!
Gotta blame it on someone…
I guess Garrett doesn’t remember the game where he cost the Cowboys a win by icing his own kicker
Let’s be honest, coaching change is coming. The kicker does suck and this is them trying to hold on to playoff spot and maybe a lucky first round win.
There’s many issues, but this change should’ve happened weeks ago. He should’ve never had the job to start the year. Better options were available.
Jerry needs to give up the GM role for this team to be successful
Nobody likes to be micro managed, ownership and running a team does not mix.
Roberto Aguayo is available.
