Sunday’s regular season finale could mark the final game of the Cowboys’ 2019 season and, in turn, the last game in Jason Witten‘s storied career. For what it’s worth, the tight end isn’t viewing Sunday’s contest against the Redskins as his swan song.

“I really don’t envision this being my last game. I just haven’t approached it that way,” the 37-year-old said (Twitter link via David Moore of the Dallas Morning News). “We’ll see what happens down the road.”
Witten rejoined the Cowboys after a year in the broadcast booth. Despite his advanced age and, perhaps, a bit of rust, Witten has remained productive. Appearing and starting in all 15 of the Cowboys’ games to date, Witten has notched 59 catches for 505 yards and four touchdowns. His per-catch average of 8.6 yards is a step back from his career average (10.7 per grab), but it appears that Witten still has plenty of offer, if he wants to continue his career.
Witten’s one-year, $3.5MM base-salaried deal will expire at the end of the season. After that, he figures to have plenty of options – the Cowboys would likely welcome him back for a 17th season on the field or he could even transition to coaching. If Witten wants to go to the sidelines, the Cowboys could have an opening for him.
I’m Ron Burgundy?
Keep him out of the booth he was horrible with his personal views on politics and religion shut up and stay out of the booth.
Bro freedom of speech, freedom of religion, he can say and believe whatever he wants to and you shouldn’t care
Freedom of speech and religion pertain to the government allowing/not allowing those things. It has nothing to do with ordinary people caring or not caring about them.
Should of stayed retired.
I’m fine with him playing and being a mentor but Jarwin should be starting.
^this
I’m a huge Witten guy but it’s time to put this guy out to pasture. He hindering Jarwin’s progress at this point, isn’t a better option than him as a pass catcher, and his “leadership” isn’t providing much, this team has completely folded this year and couldn’t look more disinterested despite his best efforts. I’m sure he could be an asset to any team as a TE Coach, I just hope it’s not in Dallas, forgive me if I’m soured on having former players on the staff.
I love Witt and his presence in the red zone was helpful this year but his starting days are over and he probably needs to start coaching.
It’s Jarwins job to lose at this point.
Slowest tight end in football. Cowboys need to move on.. he had a horrible drop in the philly game too.
Please god no!
Witten was basically a catch-and-fall type of receiver this year so if the Cowboys do bring him back, they should let Jarwin be the starter. Jarwin is clearly the better player and Witten basically won, and kept, the starting job because of his name as opposed to his actual production. There are a lot worse options out there as a backup TE so it wouldn’t be a bad decision to bring him back as long as they are making him the backup.
I’m all for him continuing his career on the field. Keeps him out of the booth.
Hard to imagine the new Cowboys HC would be smitten with Witten.
