The Chiefs claimed former Cardinals linebacker Terrell Suggs off waivers on Tuesday. The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter).
Initially, it wasn’t clear whether Suggs would be willing to suit up for the Chiefs. After his release, he told people close to him that he would only play for the Ravens, but the opportunity to play for another Super Bowl ring made him reconsider. He will join KC and, in all likelihood, make his Chiefs debut on Sunday against the Bears.
The pickup gives the Chiefs some much needed edge rushing ammo in the wake of Alex Okafor‘s pectoral injury. To date, Suggs has with 5.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in 13 games this year.
Suggs was a popular man on the waiver wire. As Rapoport tweets, the Saints, 49ers, and Seahawks all put in a claim, which makes sense given that all of those teams are dealing with injuries to their own pass rushers. Rapoport says the Ravens may have signed Suggs if he had cleared waivers, but Baltimore did not put in a claim.
Suggs didn’t get the homecoming he wanted, but he fell into a choice situation. Rather than playing out the year for the 4-9-1 Cards, he has the opportunity to aid the 10-4 Chiefs in their quest for a championship.
Suggs was drafted No. 10 overall by the Ravens all the way back in 2003. He spent the next 16 seasons with the team and became a franchise icon, winning Super Bowl XLVII with them and making the Pro Bowl seven times. He remained reasonably productive with seven sacks in 2018, but the Ravens let him walk to Arizona in the spring.
The Chiefs will be responsible for the remainder of Suggs’ one-year, $7MM deal.
He’s gonna refuse to play for them
As a Patriots fan, I hope you’re right!
He has agreed to play for the Chiefs, so too bad for you Mr Patriots fan.
Or Vikings but that works too
He was referring to rkmark comment
Aight
When you talk the talk you better be prepared to walk the walk. He’ll lose much respect from Raven fans if he backtracks from his previous statement.
I’m sure he’s concerned about that
Hope not. They kinda need him.
I hope he does. I wanna see him back in baltimore where he belongs
Then he will be crying at home come playoff time. He has 2 choices retire and his rights will still be owned by KC or report and play. Not a 3rd option here.
I doubt he’ll be crying. He’s already got a ring and he plans on retiring anyway.
And the Chiefs should put him on the exempt list rather than release him. NFL players are trying to circumvent rules by creating free agency when they’re not eligible. See the Antonio Brown situation.
Why because he wanted to finish his career with the team he played his entire career with? He is retiring at the end of the season. Only reason he signed with the Cards was to play 1 season at home. He doesn’t feel like learning a completely different team for 5 weeks. He’s just going to retire
Right. Because the NFL’s hottest team and #1 seed in the AFC being the only team he’ll play for because “he wants to retire with them” is just a coincidence. He wants another ring, this time one he didnt have to work for. How convenient.
Oh, boo hoo. Then maybe he should have remained with Baltimore.
I mean if he really wanted to stay in Baltimore either he should’ve tried to stay during free agency (assuming Baltimore had any sort of interest) or ask for a trade before the deadline passed. I’m sure Arizona would’ve been willing to work with him to send him back to Baltimore if he expressed a desire to do so.
He left the Ravens because he was upset that Ozzie Newsome got the boot. He felt he didn’t get the same respect from DeCosta. I doubt DeCosta wants him back but he will probably offer Terrell one of those one day contracts after he retires just to keep the fans happy.
Wonder if he’d want to go to Baltimore if they were not a playoff team.
Agreed, if he doesn’t report, the Chief’s will put him on the did not report list and his year is done.
He isn’t going to play for them lol
Maybe, maybe not… just as importantly, he isnt going to play for the Ravens either.
Hahaha
Not looking that way ………
Even if he doesn’t end up playing for them, I’m sure part of the Chiefs thinking was so the Ravens don’t have a free path to rostering him. Its the same thing as the post-trade deadline waivers in MLB (before they got rid of it). Teams will put claims on guys primarily just to prevent rival teams/other playoff contenders from having a chance.
I’m laughing at all these Raven’s clowns thinking he was going to play for the Ravens (who released him in off season) or he won’t play for anyone else… he’ll be suited up on Sunday verse the Bears.
I’m laughing at your understanding of the English language.
that’s your comeback?
That’s a very weak clap back
He was a free agent not released by the Ravens. The Ravens didn’t even claim him, so it’s a moot point
No way the Chiefs let him play for Baltimore. If he wants to play it will be the Chiefs or not at all.
The Ravens released Suggs when he went to the Cardinals; hard to believe that he would turn down the Chiefs and insist on the Ravens. Chiefs are smart; he plays for them or no one.
The Ravens do not need him. They have moved on (and up) without him. Great player, but they do not need him sucking all the air out of the locker room. Lamar, Ingram, etc. are the new team leaders.
Well this tool lost all credibility now that he decided to “reconsider”.
Lol why? Because he’s playing for a competitor? If the Ravens really wanted him, they would’ve never let him leave in free agency or at least tried to trade for him before the trade deadline. Teams and players make empty promises all the time.
