Jameis Winston will likely remain in Tampa Bay for the 2020 season. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Buccaneers are expected to bring back the quarterback next season.
However, it’s uncertain how the organization will go about retaining the former first-overall pick. “Barring an unlikely early contract,” Rapoport notes that the Buccaneers will have the option of using either the franchise tag or the transition tag (this is thanks to it being the final offseason of the current CBA). If an opposing team signs a franchised player to an offer sheet, they have to surrender a pair of first-rounders. An opposing team doesn’t need to send compensation if they sign a transition-tagged player to an offer sheet.
This is especially relevant for the Buccaneers, as sack-leader Shaquil Barrett is also set to hit free agency this offseason. As Rapoport notes, the projected franchise tag for quarterbacks is $27MM vs. $25MM for the transition tag. Meanwhile, the franchise tag for linebackers (and, presumably, Barrett) is $16MM vs. the $14MM transition tag.
Earlier this month, coach Bruce Arians refused to commit to Winston beyond this season. And, when asked about the above report, Arians said no determinations have been made.
“There’s been no decision on any player. We don’t make those decisions until the end of the season,” Arians said.
However, a bit has changed over the past few weeks. The quarterback has thrown for more than 400 yards in back-to-back games, and Tampa Bay can extend their winning streak to five against the Texans today. Winston has already set career-highs in passing yards (4,573) and touchdowns (30), but he’s also set a new mark in interceptions (24).
just like all his passes are brought back for touchdowns by the opposing D.
Lol.
Can you read the future?
Haha
Arians is a mad bomber…franchise tag will happen.
No one would surrender two first round picks. He was overrated coming out of university and in the nfl to. He will never reach expectations! Cant wait till he’s out of the league.
Seems preposterous to wish someone out of the league because he won’t reach expectations
jo park it,
He’s not good and won’t ever win a title!!
Neither will 90% of current QBs, and about 98% of the ones currently in college. Should we get rid of all of them too?
Shelton,
Easy Mr Pocket Squares…… actually do that math 1 qb out of how many 0.03% if im not mistake win it each year. Math isn’t your strong suit is it. Oh thats right! OF course if they are as awful decision making that Jameis is. Clearly he needs vision checked.
He’s only had 8 good games this year. He will forever be a journeyman QB if he doesn’t find consistency.
he should sign with the dolphins because he loves seafood
We have better seas good here in Tampa than Miami. But I appreciate the crab leg reference. He was a knucklehead for a long time but he has matured. Other than the turnovers, he’s a good QB. He’s outstanding in the clutch and 4th quarter. He’s been amazing in the 2 minute offense. He just needs to cut down on picks, though more than a handful of them this year were off WR hands and tipped at the line which has been terrible themselves. So while he does turn the ball over too much, some of them are not his fault. I think a short term contract or the franchise tag is appropriate regardless of whether we draft a quarterback in the first round this year.
Seafood
Bottom feeder we bottom feeder team. How’s he doing so far today 3 int good thing Texans aren’t firing today two brutal teams! He’s warm in Tampa anywhere else they wouldn’t put up with this guy. He’s soooooo overated! 0 titles in his future !
How’s your team up in Toronto? Oh yeah, you don’t have one. Rather have a bottom feeder team (though 7-8 is hardly a bottom feeder) than no team. Merry Christmas Marner. Go Bolts ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Ruckus,
Actually ding dong there are a lot of teams in Toronto boneheaded. For the record I’ll throw you a bone my Steelers are on a 3rd string QB and in playoff contention but thanks!Losing record is a losing record! Don’t mean squat if you don’t win a title! Enjoy golfing with the bolts!
I really don’t understand the hate on Jameis. He’s not that good. We all know it and most of us don’t care because he’s at least interesting to watch. Did he pee in your cereal or something?
SheltonM,
Why post then if you don’t understand? Bucs fan? Jameis fan? He’s not interesting to watch. Maybe watch a talent like Wilson thats a qb or Murray both can throw and run oh wait did you forget Jackson those are three talented qb’s!.
Dude your way offside with that common… you’d never say something like that to my face.
When signing with the dolphins or being homeless 100% of people would pick the later dolphins suck!!!
Oh yeah live in an income tax free state with a ton of draft picks and cap room. Actually judging the Dolphins on what they do now is comical.
2 pick 6’s to start the game. PLEASE keep him TB!
JJB ,
Exactly maybe an eye appt first!
Its resonable to bring him back in the short term but he clearly is not the franchise QB.
Who is better that they can realistically acquire? Maybe Cam? Although you may get an argument that he’s even better at this point in his career. They won’t have a high pick, so they would either have to trade up for one of the QBs, trade for another teams current QB (good luck) or find one in FA (again, good luck). There just aren’t that many options, so draft one and develop and see if Arians can help Winston turn the corner in the meantime. That’s the issue, there are only a handful of “franchise” guys, and then a bunch of Jameises.
This probably has less to do with Winston, and more to do with the Bucs not liking any of the QBs they believe they can grab.
You realize at least ONE of hurts, Tua, Herbert or burrows will be there at their pick right?
Burrows is first off the board to Cincy, and Miami probably takes Tua if he doesn’t return to school. So you’re looking at Hebert maybe being there, but he’s no sure thing. I’m no QB evaluator, but maybe the Bucs just like Winston better than Hebert? Maybe word is going around in NFL circles that someone is trading up for a young QB? Tons of things we don’t know.
Yes QB pool in NFL is bad but stupid to pay Winston 25-28 million on even a 1 year deal. After 5 years you know type of QB he is. A good QB who is way too turnover prone. You will get 1 game were he throws 3 TD’s but next game he throws 3 INTs. Best thing to do is find a cheap journeyman QB if you don’t like other QBs in FA or draft to be placeholder. Winston won’t lead you then more to a .500 record with his irratic play. Heck Bridgewater would be a better fit then Winston.
They probably wouldn’t have to tag Winston no team is going to give him more than 10
Andy Dalton starting for the Bucs next year
captainchaos55,
LOL Really.. Dalton is done….
The question is, do they feel the same way after is 4 INT performance against a Texans defense that was shredded all season?
He sucks. 28 ints. I am sorry but that is way too many from a so called “franchise” QB.
FloridaMan1988,
Agreed! I knew he was overrated coming out of the draft. Never been a fan of his game. Are you a Gators fan or Seminoles fan?
