The Browns have been researching head coaching candidates, as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports (via Twitter). La Canfora says Cleveland is doing its due diligence on possible replacements for first-year HC Freddie Kitchens, who may be given his walking papers after Sunday’s season finale.
Obviously, it would not be surprising to see Kitchens fired. The Browns have underachieved all season, they have looked undisciplined and sloppy, and Kitchens looks ill-equipped to handle a locker room full of talented but headstrong players. Kitchens has not helped himself either, as his words and actions have occasionally suggested that he is in over his head.
Just two weeks ago, we heard that Cleveland was planning to keep Kitchens around for 2020 and to give him a chance to right the ship. Since then, however, the Browns suffered a bad loss to the Cardinals — which included more infighting — and after keeping the Ravens in check for most of the first half last Sunday, they imploded in the final two minutes of the second quarter and ultimately lost 31-15.
The loss to Baltimore was a capsule of the Browns’ season. They played well for a stretch but ultimately unraveled when adversity struck, and Kitchens’ questionable decision-making helped key the Ravens’ comeback.
Given the talent on the roster, the Browns may be able to woo a high-profile head coaching candidate, and they are at least reviewing all of their options. A loss, or even an ugly win, against the 1-14 Bengals on Sunday afternoon could trigger Kitchens’ ouster.
Should’ve kept Gregg Williams as HC and Kitchens as OC. The browns would’ve been in a better position.
Agree with the Williams thought ..
Just a thought, what do you think the Browns record would be today if they kept Greg Williams as Head Coach?
10-6
I didn’t want Williams to be the head coach. He’s a good motivator, but his results have very rarely matched his name value. His defenses are consistently middle of the pack instead of elite.
Kitchens wasn’t the right choice, but Williams wouldn’t have been either.
I agree
Get Tom coghlin or Rivera whose very discipline
Coughlin I meant
I wouldn’t want Coughlin anywhere near my team at this point. I think your right about finding someone who will hold everyone more accountable though
NO, HELL NO, to Coughlin or McDaniels!
No No and No !!
Browns are a joke…
Valuable input. Appreciate it.
I was awaiting one of those idiots to post a some of their wisdom like the “browns suck” intellectual inputs.
Always have been and will be. Never will win a SB. BAKERs a BUST. SHOULD’VE taken ALLEN ha losers. Ravens are the best
Rivera,McCarthy or Lewis, although I don’t think Ohio wants to see that again. Or they can bring in the Clapper after Monday, in a life imitates art “Draft Day” move.
If someone bought him a tone of clapper lights for his house, it’d be like a rave at his house all the time.
McDaniels would be a good candidate. I know he went back in his word with the colts but Cleveland with all the talent they have it would be a win win for both if they don’t implode(very good chance)
No way! It’d be like Nightmare on 9th St. part 2. The son of Freddie
Browns need a coach with some actual ability, as well as ability to command the locker room with the group of complete knuckleheads they’ve assembled.
In my opinion, there are only two viable options that are available and fit that description: Ron Rivera or convincing either Tony Dungy or Bill Cowher to go back into coaching.
Otherwise, same old Browns will be starting over again in 2021.
I forgot Jack Del Rio. He fits that description too.
Did I miss the 2020 season already? I overslept!
Cowher will never comeback unless in a perfect situation. They need a coach with full player control they have a QB they believe in and lots of talent they need to cut or trade the knuckleheads then build.
Cowher will put foot to ass in that Browns locker room.
Will Dorsey hire a coach that is as strong willed as he is?
Kitchens is an idiot. Norv Turner would be a perfect coach for the Browns offensive minded guy that can take a young QB under his wing.
Time to bring in Urban.
If Cleveland lands Rivera… I could easily see them 10-6 or 11-5 next year at least.
Based on the lack of discipline on the field, I wouldn’t mind Ron Rivera as the head coach. Browns should be light years better on offense than what they are. Even with the mediocre OL. Would like to see John DeFillipo as the OC, but he’s got to learn to run the ball more. That was a big issue of his when he was in Minnesota. Loved when Defillipo was calling plays when he was in Cleveland. Browns need LT, RT and a RG in the worst way.
Another thing with a lot of the browns players and coaches is telling the media that they “don’t care” about various topics. Kitchens’ comment about his job status next year is the one that most jumped out this year.
Why would any team more less hire Mcdummel? He has rode the coattails of Belicheat forever. He imploded in Denver. Look at how many Belicheats coaches have imploded as a HC.
Patricia found success in Detroit. Well, success like other Lion coaches in the past 50 years.
