Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper is set to be one of the biggest wide receivers to reach free agency in recent memory. A team normally would prevent a receiver of Cooper’s caliber from reaching the open market by applying the franchise tag, but it appears that Dallas will have to save the tag for quarterback Dak Prescott. Still, Cooper made clear earlier in the season that he had no intentions on leaving America’s team. Granted, that was when the Cowboys were sporting one of the most lethal offenses in the league and looked poised for a deep playoff run. While the team remains in playoff contention, the 7-8 Cowboys have fallen far short of early season expectations and head coach Jason Garrett appears to be coaching his final season in Dallas.
At the halfway point in the season, Cooper was on pace for 12 touchdowns and over 1400 yards receiving. Instead, Cooper finds himself short of 1100 receiving yards entering the team’s final game. Cooper has not reached 100 yards receiving in a game since a Week 10 win against the Vikings and has only caught 5 passes for 43 yards in the team’s past two games. Most notably, Cooper was taken off the field for the team’s final plays in last week’s 17-9 loss to the Eagles.
As his free agency approaches alongside the Cowboys slide, speculation grew that Cooper could have been rethinking his future. But, according to Mike Fisher of Cowboys Maven, Cooper has not let the recent struggles sway his desire to stay in Dallas. On Friday, Cooper told reporters he still envisions himself as, “A Cowboy for life” and reiterated “I want to be here.” Obviously, until he signs a new contract nothing prevents Cooper from going in a different direction, but it does appear highly likely that the Cowboys will not need to look for a new number one receiver this off-season.
Over rated , inconsistent. No doubt talented. I’m glad the Raiders got J Abram to play center field for years to come for him . Best of luck Amari
proceeds to rip his acl on an unnecessary late out of bounds hit first game of his career
Yup lol. He wasn’t even playing on passing downs, was being subbed out for Curtis Riley. He played over emotional and wreckless whenever he was in there. Wouldn’t exactly say he’s a shoe in for years to come lmao
Run this story twelve more times and we still don’t care.
Amari needs a qb like brees to succeed to his full potential a gun slinger. Dak is to much of a run QB to ever hit his full potential. Hell even Brady or Rodgers would be better then dak. It’s about the system bringing the best out in a player not the players around him. Common f*cking sense.
Great point, that’s why Dallas giving away a first round pick for him was a stupid move. QBs make great WR’s not the other way around. Brady has made Edelman a HOF’er and Brees has made Thomas a record setting WR, Dak has made Cooper replaceable.
He’s thrown for 4,600 yards already this season, and averages less than 3 rushing attempts per game.
1-4 down the stretch for Dak….that’s when it really counts especially in their division….all those passing yds have not translated into wins for the Cowgirls…does he elevate the play of those around him like Brady, like Rogers?
Good thrower with talent around him, but so is Winston who’s thrown for 31 TD’s this year, with 28 interceptions…some of which have not given his team the chance to win.
If the Cowboys can’t get a deal done with Dak they will have to tag him then they can’t tag Cooper. I feel a lot of teams will be after him if that happens. The Packers need another WR and every. Thi n theh never seem to go after WRs they’d be stupid not to with him
Thanks but no thanks Amari. Dude hasn’t shown up for the last month of the season when he’s needed most. It’s bad enough Dallas is gonna pony up elite $ for their above avg. QB, no need to pony up elite WR $ for a guy that isn’t a top 10 NFL WR.
Packers gotta break the bank to bring him in him and davante would be deadly
Don’t do it. Shouldn’t pay elite money for some who disappears for half the season.
Dak 2nd in passing
Brady 9th
Rodgers 12th
But he is a run first qb??
Who cares if he’s 1st in passing? Who cares if he throws for 5k yards? Dallas is 7-8! Brady is in the playoffs, Rodgers is in the playoffs. Maybe he should run more, because Lamar Jackson runs a lot and his team has a #1 seed in the playoffs, and he’s leading the NFL in TD passes a stat that actually has meaning. Dak can take his empty yards and go shoot commercials in January.
Uh, Yes! But pay me da benjamin’s!
After that national story on how Cowboy players could make so much $$$ on side deals “at the star” you’d think they would believe. Or is it more Jerra balony?
Of course he does but he also wants to be paid a top receiver contract so which will win out?
Why is Cooper being given this superstar designation? Whoever signs him will overpay dearly.
Anybody who actually watches the games knows that Cooper has been severely banged up the second half of the season. His reward for getting it out is to have his abilities questioned.
Cooper is a top notch wide receiver and the Cowboys would be lucky to have him back.
*gutting it out*
Cowboys as a whole have been a mess. I think you have to take that in consideration as well. Elliot has been misused as well. I generally think the coaching carrousel is crazy but in this case I’d make the change.
