Longtime Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers may want to play for another franchise next season, according to a report by Matt Miller of Bleacher Report. Per Miller’s report, league circlles are hearing that Rivers, who is set for free agency this offseason, would “love” to join the Titans.
Rivers, who will turn 38 in December, is amidst his 16th NFL season. He has spent his entire career with the Chargers organization since he was traded from the Giants for Eli Manning on the day of the 2004 NFL Draft. However, Los Angeles may be looking at going in another direction at quarterback.
It remains unclear what in particular about Tennessee appeals to Rivers, although it’s worth noting he is from the south. But, the Titans definitely appear like they will be in the market for a new quarterback this offseason given the status of both Marcus Mariota and Ryan Tannehill remain up in the air.
Still, unless Rivers is willing to accept a backup role, there is no guarantee that the Titans would be willing to guarantee him a starting job. While Rivers has had an illustrious career, his age alongside particularly poor performance this season (15/14 touchdown to interception ratio) may make teams tentative to hand over the reigns.
With plenty of season left to be played, a lot remains unknown about the upcoming quarterback market, but it seems clear that the league is going to see an abnormally high amount of movement at the quarterback position. At least according to Matt Miller, Rivers is preparing for that possibility.
He’s originally from Athens, AL. It’s just about an hour and a half south of Nashville. That’s probably one of the things that appeals to him.
Thank you!
I feel like Rivers would be a good fit for Tennessee. Not a lot of pressure due to the mediocrity at QB in the past for TEN, and potentially a sleeper playoff team with Henry, Walker, Smith, Davis, and others on offensive side of ball. And a halfway decent defense
Sounds like you are also describing the Chargers
Exactly what the Chargers are.
Titans, you don’t build around deteriorating 38 year old QB’s. Just helpful advise from a fan.
They wouldn’t be building, just going for it for a year or two. I’m guessing the Chargers could pry a 3rd/4th round pick out of the move.
Rivers will be a FA, so the chargers won’t be able to pry anything. They will be at the mercy of the compensatory draft pick formula.
Assuming the Titans would need a 1-2 year stop gap, and if 38 year old QB’s are your thing…Manning is the better choice….have you seen Rivers throw recently and his decision making is terrible…that side arm sling of his just isn’t making it anymore….and as far as the Chargers getting a 3rd-4th round pick for him….good luck with that too….they’re not getting anything nearly that high for a 38 year old QB who just can’t seem to win consistently or lead his team to the playoffs…only 1 successful season in 2018 since 2009.
it assume it’s just something to root for while the team reconfigures the rest of it’s roster.
Rivers the human turnover is still a massive upgrade over Mariota and Tanehill
Taneyhill has been playing really well since coming to the Titans.
Broncos did OK with Peyton Manning
Could be a good fit. Titans weapons don’t quite measure up to the Chargers but Henry is underrated and the O-line seems better
Escape the black hole of professional sports, the Spanos Chargers. Great idea for Rivers to move to Tennessee.
Zero taxes. Please….let this be true. Old man Rivers needs to move on. Chargers need a QB for future.
Rivers is so done. Any team would be a fool to start him. It would be a Flacco type of signing at best.
Jerry Jones is somewhere thinking “Wow! Phil has a 123.8 passer rating against us so I could sign him and not have to pay Dak a fortune”.
why not?
he certainly cant play for the chargers, that’s for danged sure
why not?
he certainly cant play for the chargers
I’m tempted to call BS on this rumor. Why would Rivers be going around saying he is eager to bail on his Charger teammates just as the season is reaching the stretch drive? Would he actually be expecting better blocking from his OL after giving them a no confidence vote?
he didnt want to uproot his family and relocate from SD to LA….I doubt he’ll want to relocate his family 2,000 miles
If chargers can net mariota and a mid round pick why not. Mariota might flourish in a bigger market and being by the beach.
Cam Newton to the Chargers to replace Rivers. Cam isn’t the Cam of old but he wouldn’t be worth a hell of a lot, he would light up LA with his personality and who knows maybe he does a little better than Rivers. Cam has a running game and Rivers doesn’t and Cam probably has a better long ball than Rivers also.
Panthers also desperately need a new QB. Cam isn’t the old Cam and Kyle Allen is only ever a back up. I think they should go after Nick Foles that would make them a solid team, or possible go for Teddy Bridgewater
Spanos not taking drama queen cam…thank god. Cam should go design hats.
