Things certainly haven’t worked out during Adam Gase‘s first season in New York, but it sounds like the Jets head coach isn’t at risk of losing his job. Sources told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that “Woody and Christopher Johnson currently have no plans of making a coaching change at the end of the season.”
Even with the team’s putrid performance in 2019, it’s not entirely shocking that Gase will get at least a second season with the Jets. The team made a relatively big commitment to the coach when they signed him to a four-year deal that’s estimated to be worth upwards of $20MM. Considering the front office turnover and injuries throughout the roster, you can’t necessarily blame the organization for giving Gase another chance.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped fans and pundits from calling for Gase’s firing. In fact, a plane was seen pulling a ‘FIRE ADAM GASE NOW’ banner over New York City this week (via the NYDN). This came after a (somewhat) surprising loss to the rebuilding Dolphins, dropping the Jets to 1-7 on the season.
Mehta also provides a long list of damning stats: the Jets rank last in the NFL in scoring, passing, and rushing. Considering Gase’s reputation as an offensive guru, the results are disappointing. Further, the head coach has been unwilling to take responsibility for the team’s performance, with one rival GM referring to Gase as “a professional excuse maker.”
Despite all of this, ownership isn’t ready to pull the plug. We all know things can change quickly in New York, but it’s sounding like Gase will be on the sideline come Week 1 of the 2020 campaign.
Not saying Gase is this great coach or anything, but firing him would just be the Johnsons looking for a fall guy/scapegoat for the season. No Darnold for a chunk of games, barely have had Mosely on the field still, other injuries, and the areas they were expected to be weak in, they are weak in.
Almost everything had to go right for the Jets to have any chance at contending this year and it didn’t. The fans expecting just adding Bell, Mosely, and a new HC to instantly transform a mediocre team into a great one set themselves up for disappointment.
Mediocre into great? Lol. I think you meant AWFUL into decent.
I think everyone here is forgetting that no matter how many moves they make they’re still 4 better teams in the division
4 better teams in the division? Division= AFC East, Patriots, Bills, Dolphins, Jets…..
What exactly do you mean sir?
Bye Week. Clearly a better team than the Jets.
Ghost team
I disagree, it’s best to admit a mistake and try and correct it, than put yourself further in the hole for optics sake.
Gase should never have been hired, but should definitely now be fired.
-He’s unwilling to take any responsibility, which is a bad sign of things to come
-He’s a horrid play caller
-He’s seen a regression of Darnold and other young pieces
-He’s already alienated from some of his players, just like in Miami
This guy might be a good coordinator but he’s he’s awful as a HC
TrollHunter The FO isn’t exactly helping Darnold progress either. What are they building up around him? They got Bell but they still have no O line and his WR group is still pretty meh. And because of the O line Bell is less effective too.
His WR’s would be better if they had more than 1.3 seconds to get open downfield before Darnold gets sacked because he blinked too long
If anyone deserves to be fired it’s Freddie Kitchens, his play calling makes Hue Jackson look like Urban Meyer
Dont know why they decided to let Gregg Williams go
How he has so much power in New York is beyond me. He should absolutely be fired.
There may be good reasons beyond the win-loss record to fire Gase, but anyone calling for it because they thought the Jets were a better team than this ought to fire themselves from football fandom.
Seriously? They might be the worst team in FB. You weren’t expecting some improvement from last year’s 4 wins?
Well 20 million is a nice chunk of money. You won’t change a culture over night either. We all deserve a second chance and Gase is no exception.
They lost to Miami. That counts as about ten chances burned.
Professional football is a results based industry. Very simple you don’t win you don’t have a job. Players don’t play well, they’re cut. Coaches don’t coach well they’re fired, same with upper management. Given it’s such big buisness, why shouldn’t an owner cut his loses and get rid of underperforming coaches? Those willing to play the wait and excuses game for Gase need to look deeper. How do you come out and say you never wanted the top FA signing on your team? Only give one of the best RB’s in the game 8 touches in a game? Not simplify the playbook for a struggling 2nd yr QB? Blaming players in post game press conferences? Detached from the players! Losing to your former team, a team trying to lose every game, then say you weren’t embarrassed? Think again about your statements and giving another year to this. Btw, remember here is no boat load of money for next years FA pool, you used it all this year. Besides what top flight player is gonna want to come here? Bell, Adams and who knows who else all want out. What kind of culture is that?
Only thing thats more important than winning is money. Do the Jets really want to pay 3 head coaches?
If you hire Moe, do you get Larry and Curly at a discount?
The only thing worse than paying a bad coach $5 million a year is letting him keep his job just because you’re paying him.
He’s a sunk cost already. I get giving him another year, but then you run the risk of setting your franchise back even further. Just cut the cord.
I have absolute respect for P Manning, but he’s dead wrong on this guy being a quality HC.
They will focus heavily on the Offensive Line in the off season
Gase is to Jets what Handley was to Giants.
Have the Johnsons seen the complete regression in Darnold? The “QB whisperer” has ruined the franchise QB! He needs to go ASAP
