The Eagles’ search for a new wide receiver could lead them to a familiar face. On Tuesday, the Eagles brought in Jordan Matthews for a work out, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).
Matthews had a pair of stints with the 49ers this season, appearing in a single game (Week 7 vs. the Redskins). He’s also had workouts with the Vikings and Saints, and at only 27-years-old, there’s apparently some hope that the receiver can emerge from his current journeyman status.
Matthews had his best three seasons with Philly between 2014 and 2016, hauling in 225 receptions, 2,673 yards, and 19 touchdowns. However, since suffering a knee injury with Buffalo in 2017, he hasn’t had the same production.
The former second-rounder spent the 2018 season with Philly, hauling in 20 catches for 300 yards and two scores. With DeSean Jackson ailing, the Eagles are predictably in the market for some receiver help. Matthews’ familiarity with the offense could make him a somewhat reliable target for Carson Wentz down the stretch.
just sign the guy already. this is just a formality.
whatever
I think they need to sign Bryce Treggs. He’s is insanely fast. His route running isn’t great, but he can at least run past the secondary and stretch the field. Even if Wentz throws to him twice a game to force the DBs just to think about him it would be a benefit to the offense.
So a guy that can’t even make anybody’s practice squad will make their active roster, dress on Sundays and make a difference? Ok…
Actually it’s about system fit in the least amount of time. Matthews would be a perfect signing, and here’s why. He’s a great slot receiver with good hands and Wentz already feels comfortable with him. Now move Agholor outside he has excellent speed and let him keep the safety busy. What the offense needs to do is force the Def to account for Agholor this will force the safety to stay high and open open up the intermediate passing game & rushing attack. Let’s not forget the Eagles are at their best when they can control the clock.
Drops were his issue before if I’m not mistaken, and this current roster drops the ball a lot. Agholor is not an outside receiver he is in the slot for a reason, he has speed yes but hes shown he can’t be a reliable outside target. He is barely reliable in the slot. The fix was to not pick up his 5th year and use that money towards a real receiver. Not 20-20, he was always marginal.
