NOV. 25: The Cowboys will not fire Garrett or make any immediate changes to his staff, per Werder (via Twitter). Werder reminds us that OL coach Paul Alexander was fired during the team’s bye week in 2018, so there is precedent there, but Garrett, O’Quinn, et al. are safe for now (Twitter link).
NOV. 24: Earlier on Sunday, a report emerged suggesting current Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett could be the next head coach of the rival Giants. New York has struggled under Pat Shurmur and there appeared to be mutual interest between Garrett and the Giants. One thing that remains unclear is whether Garrett will be available. While he has been on the hot seat for much of the season, it would not be the first time public perceptions of Garrett’s job status were incorrect.
At least publicly, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has remained supportive and confident in Garrett — until now. After Dallas’ 13-9 loss to the Patriots, Jones was very critical of his coaching staff, according to Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan. The most critical commentary focused on the special teams unit, which had a number of crucial mishaps against New England. That does fall under Garrett’s supervision, but likely has larger ramifications for special teams ccoordinator Keith O’Quinn.
With that said, some of Jones’ criticism seemed like a more direct indictment of Garrett as well. “When we run up against an opponent that gets it together, we have a tough time coordinating how we put our offense and defense out there and have them playing [well] at the same time,” Jones said. The owner went as far to say that they had been “outcoached” and lacked “coaching fundamentals.”
Fisher had speculated earlier in the day that the rumors connecting Garrett to the Giants could have been an attempt from Garrett’s side to pressure Jones into an extension. However, Fisher opined for Sports Illustrated that could backfire and cause the owner to lose patience with Garrett even quicker than he would otherwise. The shift in Jones’ public discussion lends credence to that argument.
Indeed, Ed Werder of ESPN.com calls Jones’ comments with respect to Garrett his most damning review of Garrett’s work (Twitter link). Werder also speculates (via Twitter) that the Cowboys may have to win all of their remaining regular season games and at least two playoff games for Jones to retain Garrett.
Jerry gonna lay the hammer down.
We can only hope.
Really. Tomorrow him and Kraft will be getting rub n tugs together And laugh about how much billions of dollars they have.
Sounds like a great way to spend a Monday.
Yea why not. You would ditch your sister if you had billions to pay someone else to rub and tug you.
Way to take a fun joke and turn it all weird dude.
A happy ending for both!
Jerry is in a sweet spot. HC, QB, WR1, and a few other players coming off the books and the new guy can pass judgement on what he wants.
Over 90 million in cap space too. Meyer or Riley please.
Really? Meyer would not work and Riley would be over his head. The Cowboys need a real coach that will tighten things up and set expectations.
LOL @ Riley…. No one with half a brain wants to work for that owner. Look what he’s doing here.
then get a new one. no reason Garrett should still be there.
While you’re at it, Jurry… why don’t you throw the University of Arkansas ‘bout 70-80 mil. so the Hoggies can hire a top notch head coach. That’d be much appreciated, thanks. Good luck with your own impending head coaching search!
Jerry Jones was the reason Arkansas hired Chad Morris. He was a big supporter, and recommended him to the University. That’s how good Jerry is at evaluating coaching talent. Take a look at his history with the Cowboys. Most his coaching hires have been Dogs. Lincoln Riley will be too. He will be in over his head. But Jerry loves college coaches, especially from Oklahoma. It’s very hard being a Cowboys fan with Jerry Jones as the Owner/GM.
Exactly!
The man is a train wreck looking for a dumpster fire!
I didn’t say Jerry had to give his input, I just want his money lol
Arkansas needs to move to the Big 12 if they ever wanna be relevant again. never gonna get over bama lsu or georgia.
That’ll never happen. Arkansas leads the conference in national titles and competes in every other sport. The financial loss is far too great for the university to even consider that. Football used to be competitive until Bobby Petrino slept with a co-ed so I’m confident things will change. I just wish they would change sooner.
Well you’ve never won a SEC championship and your last national title was 55 years ago. Enjoy being the SEC’s whipping boys.
Who’s trying to circumcise a mosquito? JG pressuring Jerrah into an extension is funny. Just like Dak getting 40M.
Or Wentz getting 30M …
At least Wentz can sometimes beat good teams
Dak can sometimes beat good teams, too. Just about any QB can sometimes beat good teams.
This is true
What quality coach would be willing to take on the Cowboys job with the owner/GM meddling with every decision right down to play calls? Only a lame duck coach, like a Garrett type, will work until Jerry decides to let the coach make all the decisions and hire an actual football talent evaluator as GM.
Wade Phillips?
Agree with this. It just doesn’t seem like anyone independent and strong enough to run the team well would actually want to work there.
Not a Cowboys fan. Not a Jerry Jones fan. But do think they’re a better team without Garrett. And do think they’re a much better team with Jerry Jones backing down some. This is one of the better groups of players they’ve had in a while. They should capitalize.
Jimmy Johnson did a pretty good job.
Spot on comment, df08988. Any coach willing to take this job has to be willing to let his legacy be largely determined by Jerry’s decisions. That’s either going to net you inexperienced coaches looking for a chance, or coaches without options. It’s the Cowboys, so the job will always hold some appeal. I’m just not sure they’re going to be able to land a quality candidate unless Jones can identify an under the radar guy.
Still waiting for the Cowboys to beat a team with a winning record……
Beat the eagles
They were .500 at that point
Jerry’s ego just won’t let him be silent. He has an opinion about everything, even things that have nothing to do with his Cowboys. Others in the organization have assumed more responsibility and are just counting the days until they can ease Jerry into a sunshine home where he belongs.
May be hard for Dak and Dunk to win out, they only have 2 games left against the NFC East. Best case scenario could be 8-8. Wouldn’t that be grand.
The biggest problem with the Dallas Cowboys and their coaching staff is right at the top with Jason Garrett. I have never seen a head coach with so many offense of weapons constantly being nothing but conservative. They need a more aggressive head coach.
Allow me to speak for Giant fans everywhere:
NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
As another Giants fan, I agree. It wouldn’t be as bad as the Jets hiring Gase, but to take a divisional opponent’s trash would guarantee that they wouldn’t win anything. Wouldn’t be surprised, though. Their last few big hires were McAdoo, Gettleman, and Schurmer, would have all been unmitigated disasters.
All mouth Jones the writing been on the wall for years you been hearing this from cowboys fans for years! And all you did is keep your so called head coach here! All Mouth!!
