For the first time since the Broncos’ 2017 finale, Paxton Lynch will return to an active roster. The Steelers promoted him in advance of their Week 6 game in Los Angeles.
With Mason Rudolph ruled out, the former first-round pick will serve as Devlin Hodges‘ backup. Lynch caught on with the Steelers’ practice squad earlier this season. Pittsburgh has lost both Rudolph and Ben Roethlisberger to injury in five games. Both Hodges and Lynch were in-season roster additions.
One of the bigger first-round miscalculations in modern NFL history, Lynch spent 2018 out of football after the Broncos waived him in September 2018. He caught on with the Seahawks via reserve/futures contract but did not beat out Geno Smith for their backup job. The Steelers added the former No. 26 overall pick as an in-case-of-emergency option, but Earl Thomas‘ hit on Rudolph made Pittsburgh exercise its emergency scenario.
The Steelers also promoted running back Trey Edmunds and waived outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott and guard Fred Johnson. Edmunds is the brother of Steelers safety starter Terrell Edmunds.
How is Lynch>Kaepernick?
Easy, Lynch will take a lot less money to not play and hold a clipboard than Kaepernick. Kaepernick had some offers but wanted opportunities to competeto start. He will not get that in Pittsburgh. He would be 4th string and therefore not worth the money he would ask for considering how long it has been since he even played a preseason game.
This is a no longer a matter of being better. No one wants the distraction, plain and simple.
Preach it, deal1122.
Not to mention he already took what was behind door #1 and got the go-away money, so now he just needs to go away and stay there…
How much sense would it make for the Steelers to sign Kaepernick to be a backup for a week or two at the most? None. Rudolph is practicing again and Hodges played pretty well for not having had many practice reps. The Steelers don’t need Kaepernick.
Which business owner wants to sign a guy that sued them? He made his bed, cost himself well over $80m+ in on field earnings, let alone endorsements.
Exactly. He was so about his cause he took the nuisance pay to settle and go away.
Go Hodges. Kimberly, Alabama’s finest
Every time a backup QB is signed or promoted, cue the Kaepernick comments. In 2025, the comments will still be posted.
Kaep and Teebo can duke out 3rd string over a seniors golf tournament.
Can colin take a practice squad addition? It seems that the only way he will make it on a roster is to be on a practice squad and hope for a qb to go down. Even for a practice squad addition, it would have to be a team set up for his type of play which are few. Ravens, Panthers and maybe the Bills are the only ones i can think of.
He isn’t eligible for practice squad played a few too many quartets for that.
He came to Seattle and didn’t even workout. He wanted a starting job. I don’t know what Pete did but I would have busted a gut laughing. In his better years he would never have beaten Wilson out of a job.
Kap did the dumbest thing ever. He made a spectacle of himself. While I while heartedly agree with his message the delivery was off. Then he opted out of his contract. He took a gamble on himself and lost. So he took his poor me everybody’s being mean to me butt to a lawyer and sued the NFL. I would like to know what he got for himself. The last check he will get from the NFL.
He thinks he is a starter but he is a backup on some teams. That team would also have to have a well established QB and a strong locker room. He might be a better back up to Geno in Seattle but he would never see the field. I wish this side show would be done. There are enough idiots in the NFL we don’t need to add one from the outside too.
I would rather have AB than Kaepernick
Kaepernik for the Steelers, I’m sure they’d love to jump back into the player distractions business.
Everyone should forget and stop writing about that moron.
When will John elway be held accountable for his QB selection failures? Same with jim harbaugh….he can’t recruit a winning QB…elite… or develop one. One would think that former QBs would excel at finding great QBs.
