Redskins tackle Trent Williams failed his physical, according to an announcement from the club. This means that Williams will not be able to play right away, despite having reported to the club on Tuesday.
Williams experienced discomfort while putting on his helmet, coach Bill Callahan told reporters. This likely means that Williams got the all clear from team doctors, but felt that he was unable to take the field.
The Redskins, meanwhile, have obtained a roster exemption for Williams. This, on the surface, means that the team can wait a week or more before activating him. Effectively, it means at least two weeks on the sidelines for Williams, since the Redskins will be on their bye after facing the Bills on Sunday.
The bigger picture is this: The Redskins can hypothetically stall things with Williams for at least three weeks and make the argument that his 2019 season should not count, for contractual purposes. That would allow the Redskins to keep his rights through 2021, rather than 2020.
Williams, 31, skipped out on the entire preseason before sitting out the first eight regular season games. The Redskins considered trading him just before the Tuesday trade deadline, but ultimately stood pat.
So any trade for him would have failed anyway.
What a colossal waste of time.
That team’s front office is such a freaking circus.
Not really. If he were traded he would have been fine. He only said it was uncomfortable putting his helmet on so he wouldn’t have to play.
Maybe it was discomfort putting on a Redskins helmet. Sounds reasonable…
Beat writers already reported he has no intention of playing this year even though he reported.
Yeah, I thought it was common knowledge that he reported to keep his control from tolling, not because he was interested in taking the field
I’m not surprised. He’s made it obvious he doesn’t care to play for the Redskins… I can’t imagine he kept himself in peak physical condition awaiting his chance to play for them.
Or perhaps the team doctors are as incompetent/unscrupulous as he suggested (as it was the primary reason for his holdout).
But if they were unscrupulous, wouldn’t they have passed him?
They would fail him so they could roster exempt him, so they could keep his rights longer
He did get the all clear. Then he lied and said he felt discomfort putting his helmet on.
I would assume he kept himself in peak condition in the chance that he gets traded but he’s pulling a Jalen Ramsey oh my back really hurts I can’t play
Oh, I feel discomfort putting on my helmet. Somehow going to a new Team I bet that helmet discomfort goes away. Between J. Ramsey and T Williams The NFL is treading some potential choppy waters where players under contract are pulling some shannogans. Try this outside of professional sports and see how that works out for the average American worker.
Discomfort putting on his helmet? Lol seriously? They were never comfortable to begin with. So fake injury to go with the hold out.
Ahh a helmet discomfort issue, wonder if he’s been hanging out with the other non-playing malcontent AB?
He had a tumor on his head so it is probably related to that
I can’t really take issue with Trent here. He’s concerned that Washington endangered his life by how they mistreated a tumor he had.
He’s begged to be traded. He’s begged to be cut. He’s not doing this for more money – he doesn’t even care if they pay him – he simply has no faith in the competence of the Redskins, and seriously, does anyone?
Sorry, but if my company committed what amounts to medical malpractice against me, I’d vow to never work for them again either. Why can’t Washington just trade him, like the Steelers did with AB?
Why? Because Daniel Snyder and his team is a complete joke, along with the incompetent Bruce Allen.
Everyone in Wash is fed up with this owner….but they are not smart enough to change… sad sad franchise
Why would anybody trade for a player that can’t wear a helmet? Unless of course somehow he magically could wear a helmet without any discomfort since it has a different logo on there. I would think being a professional football player that couldn’t wear a helmet would somehow damper a career.
That’s a pretty funny way to fail a physical. He put on the helmet for a team he doesn’t want to play for and felt discomfort. Redskins should have traded him. I hope Williams is able to compete in the future. He’s a great LT that I feel has a legit issue with the organization. This isn’t AB nonsense.
I’m sure a huge story like this will convince at least 2 fans in Washington to care about Trent Williams rather than tonights World Series finale.
Williams experienced discomfort while putting on his helmet coach Bill Callahan told reporters.
His helmet wouldn’t fit because his head got to big?
Water head is a complete waste of skin..
Redskins are the NFL’s wasteland, at least the Dolphins have a tanking plan and are making progress..
Well, at least Washington didn’t trade him for a draft pick. No one works as hard at making a mole hill out of a mountain like Washington.
