Better late than never. The Redskins are now open to trading Trent Williams, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears. The asking price: a first-round pick, according to Albert Breer of SI.com (on Twitter).
Williams has been vocal about his desire to get out of D.C. since the offseason, but the Redskins refused to deal him. Now, with 24 hours to go before the trade deadline, they’re at least listening to offers. They’ve begun the process of looking at potential suitors, Rapoport hears, which means that a deal could come together before the buzzer.
Washington has informed teams it has a second-rounder on the table from an unknown team, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. With the team moving off its stance of trading Williams in the offseason at the 11th hour, it certainly seems like the 10th-year blocker will have a new home soon.
The Redskins’ asking price is currently unknown, but they could probably command a decent return given the dearth of quality tackles across the league. If Williams is healthy, he’d automatically represent a colossal upgrade to any front five in the NFL.
The Browns’ pursuit of Williams has been well-documented and they would be a logical partner for Bruce Allen & Co. The Patriots would also make ample sense, though they recently gave up a second-round pick for wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. It’s not clear whether the Pats would be willing to cough up more to land Williams, but it stands to reason that they’ll at least consider it.
Williams, for his part, is planning to show up for work by Week 10 in order for 2019 to count as an accrued season. Whether he’s healthy enough to play by then is a separate matter.
Skins might have actually played this right. Last year, the Raiders thought both the ‘Boys and Bears would be bad & both won their divisions (lower picks). Now The Skins approximately know where teams will be drafting.
They’ll still lose next year, don’t get me wrong, but better to wait until later in the season to know where you may be picking rather than guessing.
Raiders also drafted well for the first time in years. Bears also look bad this year so that second 1st looks really good right now.
This year’s pick from Chi town is looking good, gotta agree on that.
We got josh Jacobs and that’s really it abram ended his season the first game of the year with a late hit out of bounds and Ferrell can’t get a sack to save his life
Browns need a whole lot more than just a LT.
I thought the Browns were going to the Super Bowl? That’s what I heard back in August.
You didn’t hear it from me. I told everyone to slow down, that the Browns are still a couple years away at a minimum.
I came into this year expecting 8-9 wins, and maybe coming close to a playoff spot if absolutely everything worked out. I figured it would take some time to gel, although the growing pains have taken longer than even I thought.
I didn’t like the constant hype about them either. They need a year to click together, and they could stand to fill a few holes before they’re legit. I think Williams is a great tackle that would improve their line a ton, but I’d rather see them keep their cap space/picks and try to draft a lineman next year. Ideally, Robinson and Hubbard are both gone in a few months.
I’d prefer to get the Browns number one draft pick and never hear from or about Trent Williams again. Then again, I’m a Redskins fan and not a Browns fan.
I don’t even mind if the Browns score big on this deal and win a Super Bowl now that Baker Mayfield has the protection he deserves behind All Pro left tackle Williams. The Browns are in the AFC and are not a barrier to the Redskins unless both teams get to the Super Bowl, i.e. when hell freezes over.
I doubt the Skins get a 1st rounder at this point. It will probably be a 2nd and a 4th
A couple hundred years maybe
The Bears should insist on getting a capable kicker as part of any trades they are considering…lol.
He would be best to go to the chiefs
